Several Readers Report Slowing Sales on eBay

By: Reader

Today, we publish some recent letters we've received from eBay sellers who are wondering why their sales are down.

Dear Ina,
I really enjoy receiving your emails and reading most of your articles. I also get a kick out of reading the forum that has a diverse group of contributors (included me a few times).

I was wondering if you have heard from any readers about slow sales on eBay this month. We also sell on our own website and Sears Marketplace. So far this month our Sears sales are 50% ahead of eBay sales. Normally eBay outperforms Sears by at least 20%.

Please don't use our names if you happen to publish any of this and thank you for your valuable time.

Dear Ina,
Myself and a friend, also a seller, have been wondering "what's happening to our sales." My sales are a fraction of what they were.

Is eBay hiding my listings?? No. I can still see my listings if I search for different title words. Maybe not in Best Match but they are there, somewhere. At first I wondered if it was a location thing so I installed an IP address changer. Changed my IP address to ones all over the USA and even in the UK. I can still see my listings when I search. So why little to no sales?

I have been putting together a mailing list to tell people I am still on eBay but on Bonanza, Etsy and on my own website too. I have saved sales (with email addresses) in Blackthorne / SAPro and now SixBit. I have about 7-9 thousand sales. I opened everything in a spread sheet to get names and email addresses etc.

I had repeat customers that bought dozens of items from me but haven't had a nibble from them in forever .. So I started thinking .. Is eBay blocking all my old and repeat customers? Are they unable to see my listings? Is that possible?
Diane

Dear Ina,
You may already watch this area, but many interesting threads right now on drastically slower eBay sales from August thru October. I am likely 50% less than last years, others even worse.

I plan to end my eBay store in January or February, or just sell my own stuff; the consignment store model must fail with the new 90 day returns with shipping paid by seller.
John

I always find letters like these interesting.  Context is everything.  What are you selling?  Seems like the few times I can see someone's website or ebay store (from a link in their comment header) they're selling absolute crap or is generic and wouldn't attract traffic b/c it's digital needle in a haystack.

@1beck3,

Selling crap or not, surely the question is, why are anyone's sales falling? Is everyone's sales falling, or is it only eBay's non-preferred sellers' whose sales are falling?

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

I am experiencing similar decreases from last year.
Sales are down about 50% from this time last year in the collectibles category.

Illegal Chinese fakes have destroyed my sales.  Ebay does nothing when I report them.

I believe the significant sales declines experienced by small sellers is directly attributed to the massive failure that has been John Donahoe's tenure at the helm of eBay.

It is fitting as Donahoe fades off into the sunset that his final Holiday Season as CEO and the miserable sales the site is generating show just how inept his so called leadership has been.

Unfortunately, I hold out little hope for eBay's future under soon to be CEO Devin Wenig since he was hand picked by Donahoe to succeed him.  As we have seen in the past with this company, when new leadership is picked by the outgoing leadership, the mentality remains much the same and the failures continue to mount.

Thus the future for eBay's marketplace appears desperate and bleak -  even more so without profits generated by PayPal contributing to hide the many marketplace miscalculations.

I'm not sure how many times I will say it but eBay has clear caps on sellers and if you keep track of daily and monthly sales, you will quickly note that they are stopping your sales but during the holidays for the last 2 years, we have seen that eBay gives part of your sales to new victims ( merchants) so that they can feel as if eBay is actually a place to get good sales. Perhaps they also give a portion of your sales to super big sellers, to keep them happy. Whatever it is, eBay knows you have low sales and they are not going to do anything about it.

Ebay is also losing traffic, both absolutely and relatively. According to Compete.com

Oct 2013 85.4 million unique visitors per month
Oct 2014 68.3 million unique visitors per month

For comparison, Amzzon.com

Oct 2013 130.8 million unique visitors per month
Oct 2014 121.7 million unique visitors per month

Until a couple of years ago, eBay had more traffic than Amazon

My sales are up $4400.00 based on the last 6 months compared to the same time period last year. My sales were slow so I went in and started updating listings, photos and prices and my sales started picking up.

Sales on both my accounts are down by at least 50%. This has been going on for quite some time. I have all my items cross-posted on Bonanza...not selling there either so perhaps it is still the economy?

Our sales have been down 50-75% for several months.  Even our Top Rated accounts don't bring in half of what they used to do, and we even lowered all our prices 10-20% to no avail.  We have a wide range of consumable products and 100's of repeat buyers.

The buyers just aren't here like they used to be.  Amazon grows month after month and every product that has a sales Ranking there will always sell at the same rate regardless.

Ebay is the next Enron.  When Enron collapsed it was instantaneous and overnight.  I predict that ''Ebron'' is very very deep into the inevitable future.

I've been on Ebay for 15-16 years.  They are having more technical issues and are doing dumber things in every area of their Company than ever before.

There is 100% INcompetence at Ebay.  They are not Competent at anything, anywhere, nothing is working right, nothing is growing, and there is no JOY to be found anywhere, sadly.

It was really good while it lasted, really really good.  If one is going to sell online at all, it is imperative they get some Amazon strength and above all build up their own Website and maximize every possible channel.

Agreed. Also, remember the rule -- A's pick A's while B's pick C's.

I suspect eBay will be sold in the not too distant future.

Please don't forget; sales have been dropping for a LONG time now not just a month. eBay has been causing me a burning pain in my gut, kind of like a divorce. Can only think of one reason why I stick around and that's because of all of my hard work earning my top rated power seller status with 100% positive feedback. All that hard work and endurance enduring eBay. But they have been nickle and dimming me to death with all of their fees etc. I have had a website and there's no visibility for those either. I have to question looking at the bigger picture; if online is what it's all cracked up to be to sell on anymore.

Dismal.... TRS for over 8 years - never ever seen it this slow.  Best Match now means - Lowest price from China with Free Shipping -  How do American sellers compete?  I sell brand new merchandise. I too am running my own website but it's not enough to support me.  Hello Bonanza and Amazon -- have to make a living somewhere and eBay has gone to Hell in a hand basket.  If you don't believe it take a look at the eBay insider stock sale transactions at

Interesting stock report; I'm not surprised at all. And it definitely predicts something... I could kick myself for supporting Donahole all these years with no return.

My past 90 days sales on venues (vs last year) are:

 * ebay DOWN 45-50% ... selling same # of items

 * Amazon WAY UP (but, to be fair, I'm listing more
      items there than I did last year at this time.)

 * eCrater: about the same

 * Bonanza: same

 * eBid: UP

 * webstore: same (zilch)

 * Atomic Mall: 5% down

From all this, I'm inclined to conclude that buyers are
leaving/(have left) ebay and are going to other venues.
Many of the "noise" sellers that left ebay, probably no longer buy on ebay anymore either.

"Destructive innovation" at its best!
Looks like someone must have had too many "thinking days".

You are not alone. I've noticed sales have dropped like a rock since the security breech a couple of month ago. Yet my sales have doubled or even tripled on the other venues I sell on. Ebay use to be my top revenue producer but now its gone from first to last.

And what's also interesting is this is at the beginning of the buying season so sales should at least be a little up on eBay, but nothing. I think eBay has finally died. Not to mention their return process doesn't work anymore.

I have noticed new TV ads for buying on eBay so they must also recognized sales have dropped.
No reason for me to stick around eBay anymore, I can work hard somewhere else instead for top rated seller status that doesn't matter if there's no sales.

There have been far too many reports such as those set forth in these letters to conclude that all the sellers experiencing low sales are selling crap. It's obvious that something is seriously wrong with eBay. I don't know if their (bad) reputation has caught up with them, or if buyers have just gotten sick of trying to navigate a site where they can't find what they're looking for (if there's not one of the almost weekly outages). At the rate things are going, eBay may not survive to see JD depart.

I would put MONEY on it that ANY seller who left ebay due to the poor treatment;  lack of respect and dismal sales will NEVER buy on the site again.  They will also tell EVERYONE they know.

A local paper runs a small illustration that shows a door way with people bustling in and out labeled "When you advertise...."  and the same doorway with a large spider web over it labeled "What happens when you DON'T advertise...."

Ebay doesn't WANT to grow their business---

What a mess between slowed sales (I have noticed too...) and today's tech glitches...
Though wouldn't affect me!
Why?  B/c eBay has grounded me for 7 days for... well, I honestly have no idea what.
Hating eBay right now...

I have been selling w/ eBay for the past 3yrs.
99.6% positive feedback, honest seller, etc etc.
I take my business very seriously.

So I was listing some $40 J Crew flats last week and I hadn't listed them 5 mins and the listing disappeared into thin air.
I was baffled.
I was just about to call eBay when an email shows up citing a MC999 Violation: Trademark Violation-Unauthorized Item.
As a result, they took my listing down and informed me in the email I could not list any new items for 7 days.

Utterly baffled.

My listing was as such:

J Crew Ballet Flats-NWOT-Black w/ Faux Onyx Gemstone-Size 6.5.

Well, turns out the use of the word 'faux' to simply describe something flags the system and they think you are selling a fake item.
I used the word 'faux' simply as a descriptor--similarly to the way vegan leather is listed as 'faux leather' or fun, fashion furs are described as 'faux furs'.
I was in no way, shape or form trying to bluff anyone or sell a fake anything or a counterfeit anything.
Heck, J Crew is not exactly quite the brand people try to make fakes of...
Add to it, I was not attempting to sell faux onyx-
Plain and simple I was just describing the item.
I called eBay and begged and pleaded for the non-English speaking (sorry-but really challenging...) rep to understand this was not a violation of eBay policy, but rather a poor use of the word faux (apparently) and more a mistake in semantics.
After multiple calls the best they could do was appeal it and I would get a call back in 24-48hrs.
Fast-forward 4 days and no call (shocker).
I called and was told very little explanation and that the restriction could not be lifted.
In the meantime, plenty of J Crew shoes NWOT new without box are listed by other sellers on eBay.  How was my listing different?
I cannot list any new items for 7 days--and Black Friday is 4 days away...
Thanks eBay.
Just as I thought the climate was becoming more seller friendly... I was clearly mistaken.
