Does Opening an eBay Store Exclude Sellers from Listing Promos?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I read your blogs and newsletters as they come out and enjoy their enlightenment. My concern is the random free promotions on eBay. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem.

I have sold on eBay about 10 years and just opened a store in September 2013. I usually will always get a free promotion (at lease one a month) However, I have not been included in the last five promotions. This has really hurt my business.

I opened a basic store so I get 150 free a month. However, I use these to list new items and used the free promotions to relist and revise the items not sold.

I called eBay after the fifth time and asked why? Even though the free promotions are random I shouldn't be left out of them five times in a row. Of course, they said they would check - to no avail.

I also asked if having a store hurt my chances of getting the promotions. Of course - they said no. However, still no more free promotions. Am I the only one having this problem?

I have three different stores. Two of these stores have been open more than 7 years. We get the offers all the time but have never used any of them. We keep telling Ebay to skip us the next time and when the next time comes we get the offers again.

We have two accounts with the $15 stores, because most of the categories we sell in are lower FVF with a store, so it doesn't cost us anything.

However, for some reason, when I list items I never pay any insertion fees. It's always 00.

I do get those offers all the time and I have no idea if that's why I am paying no listing fees. This has been going on for a long time.

@Steevo, shhhhhhhh ... your zero charges just might be a glitch that favours sellers instead of eBay—for a change ...

Did you check your settings to see if you have "opted in" for special promotions?
I'm pretty sure I have checked out of them.

I have been selling on eBay since 1998. I am invited to opt in to promotions all of the time. I have down scaled my store to 800 listings from 1800 due to disappointment in the search engine performance at the end of Q3 and Q4.  The free listing promotions save 10 cents per listing. I am not concerned about saving 2 to 3 dollars per day because of some promotion. I want the product that I have listed to been found in search so that it will sell like it did has been for 15 years until 5 months ago. eBay is giving away listings to sell advertising on them, but has no intention of actually having them show up in search.

I'll gladly pay the regular price to list if it means the items will actually show up in Search.

Not matter if you have a store or not. As far I read from other sellers with/without stores is random. I don't have a store. I returned in 2010 using the 1rst (re-start) of the free promos. After it. I got all the promos. During last year, I was only invited to the auction promos not the BIN. Now I get invitation for the BINs every 2 months.

Also you must be taking closer look to your eBay Message Invoice because the invitations are ''Stealth''. eBay stopped long time ago sending the messages to private e-mails. The invitations are in your eBay Invoice waiting and not always you get the it the 1rst day. I received some the 2nd or 3rd day. After the promotion ends. The message just disappear. So if you never look closely your ''Message'' tab. You will not noted it.

"I'll gladly pay the regular price to list if it means the items will actually show up in Search."

Several years ago an eBay survey included questions as to how amenable sellers would sellers be to paying an extra fee to have their listings receive 'greater exposure.'

I believe sellers will be offered the "opportunity" of paying to have the eBay listing cloaking device turned off.

No different than gangsters extorting protection money from merchants to keep the 'protectors' from breaking the plate glass windows or burning down their stores.

So let us say you bought into ebay's ''protection'' plan to have your items cloak of invisibility lifted. However, after paying for this exposure your items are still not selling. How would one know if your items are really being shown or just another money grab by ebay into the pockets of sellers. Of course all of this is just speculation and looking into more of the same theft of services not rendered in the future.

Why bother getting a college degree when thievery or white collar crime is the new hot career path.

''However, after paying for this exposure your items are still not selling.''
Then you could pay for eBay's Premium Turbo-Booster Exposure Plan which you would need to set yourself apart from those that are paying for mere exposure.

Everyone who is complaining about search better go READ UP on the new requirements.

This search is completely different and in most cases the exact OPPOSITE of the old.

Title needs to be SHORT, not long, put the details in the description.

MORE PICS, list in the right category or they will lose the listing altogether. USE the specifics. If it applies, use the catalog, just be sure to delete their photo.

This search is totally different.

Of course, 90% of it is a secret. So search through here to see tips. Most of them are spot on.

And NO opening a store has nothing to do with it. We got almost every single promotion, and it did NOT help our sales.

Paying attention to the new search did, though.

Always nice to have an e-commerce "partner" (cough cough) who makes up new rules every 6 months and keeps most of them a secret. Are we back in high school?

This explains why "4th quarter sales are expected to be disappointing"

DOOUUUH.

I don't have any stores but I do have 2 regular accounts that I use to sell and buy on.  Use them for both selling and buying.  And I have been hit-or-miss on promos---sometimes I get them sometimes I don't and most often I don't find out about them until I see something somewhere else!  This latest Free til 21st I DID get in my actual email tho .  If you are NOT getting them in your email you should check and see if you are signed up to get these that way.

And YES if ebay would just SHOW the items I list to ALL who go looking FOR them--and I knew they did not long before they FINALLY admitted it!!!! I would be happy to pay an insertion fee as of old.  Now however I use the Free 50 and hope and pray.  Not a very effective sales method I agree!

I find it HARD to believe that no one in the finance world or business or even the ecommerce world did NOTHING--SAID nothing--broadcast NOTHING---about ebays admission of HIDING items sellers placed for sale.  Silence .

Except here.

Wall Street etc should have been incensed.  This is restraint of trade and violates several contract laws as far as can be seen. And yet---crickets.

I don't see any secrets; it's all about "catalogue" database uniformity and the new search will refer to those catalogue details ...

That might not be a bad thing except that you can bank on eBay to stuff it up (where are you Hugh?) ...

And, once again, the indicators are that there is no place for OOAK or difficult to classify items, only shiny new, easily catalogued, stuff—direct from China ...

Good luck, Johnny Ho ...
