Petition to Have eBay Stop the Final Value Fee on Shipping Charge

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I recently started a petition on Change.org to eBay - I read some of your blogs associated with eBay and I thought you may be interested in writing about this issue!

eBay: Stop the 'Final Value Fee On Shipping Charge'

I realize that asking eBay to cease taking 10% of the shipping charge is unlikely to happen. I wish eBay would take their software that allows them to offer 'calculated shipping' and refine it to include their 10% shipping charge within the calculated amount. This could be the opening of a new door to prevent sellers from charging excessive shipping amounts in the first place.

Thank you and have a great day!
K. Dresser

Has any online petition ever brought the results sought? And JD is certainly not going to let something as meaningless as a petition stop him from collecting his fees.

Let's face it.... for years eBay management, spokespeople and corporate shills told sellers it was unethical to profit from shipping costs.

Yet, when eBay needed to increase revenue in order to conceal reduced profits from declining sales from Wall Street and investors, eBay turned around and did exactly what they told sellers was wrong to do... Now eBay profits from shipping costs and still tells sellers it is wrong for Them to do so.

Waoo! Petitions and boycotts. Good luck.

I will nice to see some people wake up. eBay isn't a service necessary to live. It is a freaking company selling a service. They were created to make money. They only lost in class actions when they ask for fees not under their policies.

How many people is still buyers in eBay? I'm still a buyer. eBay is lazy to policy its site. So they exploit the complaint of some sellers making big profit from S&H.

''Hey, Joe! Why are we losing resources following sellers making profit from S&H? We can take part of the cake too with a S&H fee. So to make things fair for buyers. We let them kill these sellers with 1s in the DSR. Some sellers will do anything to be here. We have their minds and live under our control. So to avoid some sellers trying to escape. If they get paid. Lets not allow refunds for the S&H prices.''

eBay said the FVF on S & H charges was levied to encourage cheap shipping to buyers.

Unca_Grief said just add the S & H charges to starting prices to avoid the FVF.

$100 selling price + $10 shipping = $11 FVF.

$110 selling price with 'Free Shipping' = $11 FVF.

LOL lets make sure we all understand whats REALLY going on ...

Its called eBays hunger for FVFs - PERIOD

eBay (since they dont actually sell anythg - excet hot air from thier execs) dont understand shiping costs, they dont understand packaging costs, handling costs OR understand the time and effort it takes most small sellers to ship thier items.

At eBay everyone is Skullcandy or Datavis or Sonicelectroncis - people who have immense shipping deals with UPS or Fed EX and get daily pickups FREE. Of course its NOT so with smaller dealers.

eBays rules reflect THOSE people and thier conditions, not yours or mine.

The other issue here is the people that charge 99 cents for an item then $50 for shipping. eBay feels they are getting "cut out of the profit picture" that way and the FVFs on shipping was menat to fix that too.

As an aside .... eBay was NO WHERE to be seen at CES. It seems everyone is tired of the worlds biggest con artists. They listed as exhibiting with no booth number, werent in the official directory, and didnt have a private suite number ANYWHERE.

Hidding from last months bad quarter is what it is in reality - one JD better wake up from SOON.

I spoke to MANY MANY MANY vendors - and guess what thier first line was .... ? "NO EBAY" .. they must know something too :)

It'll never happen!  Even when it was a rule not to list items with wildly ridiculous shipping prices, people STILL cheated!!!  People will always cheat if they can get away with it!!  Lisitng a camera for $.01 with $500 shipping is a clear fee-avoidance!  It will still happen, therefore any petition, no matter how long or how well represented will never effect a change!
I got really tired of seeing messages of me "charging more for shipping that is the norm for this product"!!  I was shipping from Canada for X-sake!  Yet I was set out for punishment & constantly harassed!  Care to know the difference between sending an item "insured & tracked" to Europe?  USPS $24.  Canada Post $34!!!
I'm being forced to give up a successful drop-ship business and not knowing if going back to home-shipping is even worth my time!

I suggest to look at Free Shipping as a way to avoid paying FVF on shipping. With the new calculator for across the board FVF, you are paying 1% or more on the shipping. Just add shipping charge into the price and the ''buyer'' thinks like they are getting a deal. I also think that when you do a search, the entire price should be added up and shown in the column, not just the buy it now or auction price.

We've been all over this in the eBay discussion groups, including a thread regarding (I think) this specific petition, although I couldn't find it just now, so possibly eBay nuked it.

Anyway, the odds of eBay paying the slightest attention to a petition are Slim and None, and Slim just left town. The reason for including the Shipping charge in the FVF has been explained again and again (unscrupulous sellers had been evading the FVF with giveaway sale prices combined with inflated Shipping charges), and that ain't gonna change. Period.

The only area where you could hope to gain traction, and it would probably take the force of law to do it, would be to persuade eBay to deduct the cost of the postage you're spending to ship the item prior to applying their percentage fees. In that area, they're charging you a percentage on funds that you don't keep anyway, and they can see exactly how much that is if you're printing the label through their system. As I said in the forum discussion, under the current scheme, they are effectively charging you more to sell heavy objects than light ones.

You're welcome to complain all you want about their methods of charging a percentage on your transactions, but please acknowledge that you're aware that you have not one iota of a chance of changing that. Not one.

I'm against FVF on shipping, even when item start at 0.1 at auction and shipping cost is $500. It is not always a fraud.

At auction it is always better to start at low bid in order to attract bidders. what if the seller's item is worth $500 but they want to start the auction at low price. By charging $500 shipping they can guaranty that they are not loosing on the item. if it is a smart tactic or a stupid one i'll leave it to the seller to decide, but it is not necessary a fraud.

Sellers can put reserve on the item but that is also known to discourage potential bidders and ebay charge fees for that too.

ebay punish sellers for the stupidity of a few by charging fee for shipping. ebay should have a clear policy about shipping cost. but also they have to provide tools that helps seller to determined the correct shipping cost that includes postage, insurance, packaging material cost and time.

Whether its legal or not - wont stop eBay, whether its ethical or not - wont stop eBay.

eBay is a world unto itsself - thats why when they loose any court case its a big deal - even if they loose $1.

eBay has insulated itself from %99 of the legal issues that most sites have.

Thier TOS/UA was designed to insure that YOU (by your logging on) agree to EVERYTHING in it. You agree to not go to court, you argree to binding arbitration, you agree that if they want to push granny in a wheelchair off a cliff - they can - because YOU gave them permission.

If eBay was an honest and above board company they wouldnt hide behind the skirts of the Philipeano women they hire for "customer service" - thye'de "man up" and talk you like an adult - but they dont.

VERO would have contact info (besides vero@ebay.com)(which they never read anyway) and have methods to deal with things - but they dont.

And if you can wade through (read navigate) all of that nonesence - you end up going to CA and sitting in front of a judge who they helped get elected, whose son/daughter went through college with JDs kid or baloney like that - and you would get the short end of the stick AGAIN.

You can petition anything you want, eBay doesnt care, wont care, never will care.

They have changed eBay from c2c to b2c and the b's are the people that funnel them money on the backend to make/insure things get done.

If you are Sony and you want Netenforcers to roam freely on eBay and remove sellers of Sony Alpha cameras - send eBay money. If you are Skullcandy and you want unfettered competition for your items on eBay - send some money and you can VERO anyone at anytime with no rythm/reason or proof - then you open a STORE om eBay. If you have 1100 negatives in a month (1100 - lord you must be doing something WRONG dude) you send money into them (you promise 20-30k listings a month (via a contract) and they look the other way (that would be Datavis).

I admire your interest in TRYING to make eBay a better platform - but its wasted breathe and time - better spend it looking for new places to sell or buy - then trying to get ANYONE at eBay to listen to anyting you have to say.  (I gave up AGES ago - it was pointless).

eBay, is like Walmart.

Walmart has the "return with no questions" entitlement policy and eBay subscribes to the "free shipping is gonna fix all that ails you".

So, to that end, penalizing your sales profit by taking a percentage of the shipping is a win-win for eBay.

Given that, eBay is not going to stop "doing what it does" and, honestly, the only way eBay is ever going to believe they do not have the upper hand is when "All" the disgruntled Sellers exit stage right to a more successful and flexible platform.

And, that scenario does not exist yet.

So, nothing is going to change and the petition is an exercise in futility.

Build a website, build your own enterprise, and diversify. Do something that will make a difference.

It seems the main reason eBay started charging a FVF on shipping was to encourage sellers to offer free shipping.

Why would a seller build their shipping cost into their selling price and then pay a FVF on it, if they could NOT pay a FVF on advertised shipping cost?

$100 selling price + $10 shipping = $10 FVF.

$110 selling price with 'Free Shipping' = $11 FVF.

I personally hate adding shipping into the price. Say you're selling a 1-2 pound item. It costs $5.32 to ship in-state but costs $9.88 to ship to the other coast...you're shafting people who live closer to you by adding the $9.88 or conversely you are shafting yourself when you add the $5.32 and someone from the other coast buys the item. Someone always loses.

I'd rather use a calculator and deal with it fairly, however, some people have that mentality that it's a bigger bargain because of so-called free shipping.

I've toyed with the idea, but I ship heavy things at times such as clocks and plates. An example of that is an item weighing 10 pounds going to a nearby zone will cost around $10 to ship, but going across the country that same package costs $18 at the very least, and you're also forced to use parcel select, dinging your shipping time DSR. If I added $18 to a stack of plates I wanted to rid myself of for $20 it looks far worse to start a price at $38.50 than it does at say, $29.99.

At least if they are paying for the shipping you can say, ''Hey, you can have these in 3 days, but it's going to cost you $32.00. If you don't mind waiting 3 or 4 extra days you can save yourself $14.00'' It feels better to me than saying ''Since I offered free shipping, you're getting cheap ass parcel select.''

eBay cares about no one but their shareholders, buyers, and China. They are willing to do any and everything in an attempt to catch up with Google which they never will.  Ebay will not last because they are hated so much. In fact, I know of no other company hated like eBay is hated.

I  personally believe that is they are to charge you for shipping, then maybe they should do all the postage, packaging, handling etc, to allow it's Sellers to ship for "free", heck even USPS offers free shipping supplies
