eBay Global Shipping Doesn't Allow Buyers to Add Items to Order

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I operate a Premium Store and usually have 1000 to 1500 items for sale, mainly printed matter. I sell all over the world.

When the Global Shipping Program started, I enrolled. My experience has been mixed. Some people don't mind paying $25 shipping on a $10 item, others check the prices on the USPS web site and express shock and disbelief, which is usually directed at me.

What is clear is the program generates reasonably good overseas revenue because eBay adds a nice tag line to its search results describing a GSP participant as offering "customs and tracking services."

Unfortunately, real problems occur if the Buyer wants to add an item to an order that was paid and not yet shipped. It's just not possible. The only thing that can be done is to cancel the original order and start a new order. We go to PayPal, refund the money and, because a third party is involved, the cancelled order doesn't get cancelled, it goes back into the waiting for payment section. There it remains in eBay purgatory.

After the order is shipped, we're left with an order that's been shipped and a duplicate order that's waiting for payment. I haven't found a way to actually get the cancelled orders removed and I have a number of them piling up. Worse yet, Buyers receive nonpayment notices for the orders that were cancelled.

The Top Care staff says that it's a software glitch and if you ask, they'll send the Buyer a friendly email telling them not to worry. The GSP staff on the other hand, gets indignant with the mention of the phrase "software glitch" and claims it's the Buyer's fault for not following the instructions on the shopping cart.

The Filipino call center staff came up with the best idea yet and recommends dropping out of the GSP program altogether, which I am in the process of doing.

Please let me know if you or your readers know of a workaround.
A.

The call center staff gave you the best response to your inquiry. The GSP is so screwed up it will never be fixed and eBay leaves the problem they cause by blaming other people instead of them selves.
When I grew up I was taught at an early age to take responsibility for the actions that happened from something that I did if it was right or wrong. They quit teaching that in the '80's or so to a lot of people that were growing up at that time so that now it is common to take responsibility only when something good happens and if something bad happens it is always the other persons fault.
That is why society is going down the tubes to hell in a hand basket.

eBay is a prime example.

If you are a seller who has opted in to the eBay Global Shipping Program, you need to be proactive with regard to establishing realistic buyer expectations related to additional shipping costs for international orders.

A simple addition to your listing description and additional checkout instruction field along the lines of:

" Our international orders are processed through eBay's global shipping program. International buyers should expect to be billed by eBay for additional shipping and handling related expenses as part of your purchase. "

" We appreciate your understanding that these costs are assessed and collected entirely by eBay, and that as sellers we have no control over the additional shipping and handling costs related to your purchase. "

" For questions regarding eBay's Global Shopping Program, timing of shipments or related additional costs, kindly contact eBay customer service and they will be happy to resolve any questions. "

I love to hear how eBay's ''features'' actually perform--I can't imagine eBay even conceding it has issues to address with Global Shipping. Maybe not even really aware of them. Apologies for a software problem don't exactly build consumer confidence. I don't know how any of us sellers make money at eBay these days. We can't manage buyer expectations without apologizing and appearing helpless. Etsy is pretty good.. so far.

I wonder if eBay knows that their call center is telling sellers to get out of the GSP. Surely that isn't contained in the script that they're supposed to be reading to people.

Most of us predicted GSP would be a disaster just like most of the schemes ebay tries.

It was a hastily conceived program whose only purpose was to generate revenue without a correspondingly equal value proposition.

Aside from being dispatched to spend more time with their families, the cretins who dreamed up this debacle didn't understand global shipping or its dynamics from a seller's or buyer's perspective, didn't care if they did or not, and were only looking to generate a quick buck without thorough beta testing.

Like the Shipping Time star, GSP is another tool that ebay thought would generate a lot revenue with virtually all negative consequences to be inflicted on sellers.

Ebay is nothing more than a world class parasite profiting legally and illegally from the labor of others.

“New eBay Shipping Logistics Team Working on Lockers and Kiosks?”

http://www.ecommercebytes.com/cab/abn/y14/m01/i09/s01

“In the spring, eBay was recruiting for managers as it embarked on a large scale strategic project to build a next generation shipping and logistics platform that would serve sellers across eBay, Paypal and Magento. …”

Obviously, this project is directed at the Ho’s preferred major sellers, not the smaller merchants that made eBay the great marketplace that it used to be …

https://blog.ebay.com/get-to-know-ebay-shipping-and-logistics/

This exercise appears to be an further extension of eBay’s expensive “Global Shipping Program”. Whatever, when you get down to talking about lockers and kiosks you know that things are getting desperate at the ’Bay. Now the Ho is planning to try and better the servoces of FedEx, UPS and USPS, and undoubtedly whatever he comes up with will cost double the norm, as has been the case with his GSP.

Johnny Ho continues to hallucinate; regardless, whatever it is he is smoking, it must be good stuff …

you file to get your FVF back and use "mutually agreed not to complete the transaction" as the reason.

We're in the GSP and LOVE it.  Of course, we wouldn't ship international (on ebay) without it.
We USED to ''back in the day''.  But we quit several years ago with the introduction of the feedback changes and dsr's etc etc etc.
And we STILL DO on the other sites we sell on (bonanza, etsy, ecrater)
The GSP is NOT set up for combining purchases.  (not yet anyway).  Each purchase should be mailed seperately unless they contact you first and allow you to make a special listing for them.
From the standpoint of a seller who chooses NOT to ship internationally, GSP is the perfect partner.
They buy....you ship to Kentucky....and GSP handles it from there.  Doesn't get much easier than that.
We sell heavy items, so the cost is cheaper for many of our buyers than what WE WOULD have charged to get it to them priority.
And besides, we're in biz to make money.  So the buyer can either buy or NOT.  Anything we sell thru GSP is just icing on the cake to us because...like I said....we wouldn't be offering it for sale overseas without it.

I had an item end with GSP ($1,000+ item I knew would go somewhere overseas), The buyer in Taiwan had all kinds of shipping requests...I told him it was out of my hands with the GSP....he filed a total amout request through ebay which I got direct to me and I was able to respond with an invoice for direct shipping. I have not had a chance to test this further yet.

A buyer buys a $23 item through GSP... add to that $27.88 for GSP charges- the buyer is nice and pays and sees another item a minute later for $31 and gsp adds $32.06 and the seller can't adjust the gsp total...
Wow- just WOW.
The buyer is really screwed and the seller looks TERRIBLE.
SORRY but we Gotta say it:
We told ya so!

The ONE time I accidentally opted in to Global Shipping (forgot to uncheck the box), the item, of course, was returned.

Guy paid me $63. He kept insisting I refund him $84 and I could not fathom why...then it dawned on me that they charged him $25 total for the shipping on an 8 ounce watch! Ridiculous.

I refunded him the $63 he paid me. But I am unsure of how he was going to get back the other $21. They, as per usual are very unclear about that particular policy.

The beauty of eBay’s global shipping is how much money it brings to eBay!  Lots and Lots and Lots.

Ebay does not send each international order separately (as we do ourselves), but eBay groups orders to each country in a consolidated shipment.  This saves eBay a ton of money on shipping costs.

Does eBay refund this savings to the seller and buyer?   Ha, Ha, Ha!

So why would eBay offer to combine a buyers multiple orders to save on global shipping?   This takes money out of eBay’s pocket and is a big NO, NO, NO!

An enlightened eBay would come to us sellers who in 2013 lost 99% of our orders to international buyers due to high shipping costs and offer up an international shipping program that dramatically cuts international shipping costs bringing those lost international buyers back.

But NO that would reduce eBay profits.

“No Receipt? No Problem. Sell it on [Sleaz]eBay!”

“As you can see, this is a recipe for disaster. The very first thing ebaY will want when a buyer complaint is filed will be proof of authenticity/purchase/acquisition for the items(s). But feel free to list all your fake designer and brand name widgets and gadgets. Ebay wants you to! …”—cappnonymous

Another desperate “special offer” from eBay inviting their fellow felons to hawk their stolen/fake goods for sale on eBay …

“Sell your first 10 [stolen/fake] items for free.”

Yet another indication that things must be getting particularly desperate at the ’Bay … So, what’s new? …

Can’t you just picture those headless turkey in the eBay executive suite, running around in circles, flapping their wings, bumping into each other, and coming up with such pathetic ideas …
