eBay Promise of Holiday Shipping Discount Falls Flat for Many

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I have been reading for years. Need to speak out. eBay is now touting their holiday postage discounts. Problem is - from my experience, its all a fraud.

I send a lot of 3oz First Class packages...Always $1.69 with tracking through ebay AND with non-eBay sales through PayPal.

NOW - on eBay postage for 3oz First Class is $2.07, they you get your BIG EBAY DISCOUNT OF 18%, bring it down to - GUESS WHAT? $1.69.

This is finally crossing the line for me and I'm hoping they can be shamed into admitting and apologizing...Thanks,
Donna

As always, another false promise from this lousy company, ebay. What else is new?  I recommend that anyone upset about this take 2 minutes and complain to the Better Business Bureau (BBB)about ebay.  I did so this morning. Here is the link: http://www.bbb.org/
Here's a tip, just in case any of you own any ebay stock, I would start selling it now.  Just like their customer service, their stock is taking a nose dive down.

Shamed into admitting something and to apologize. HA HA HA One will get that when the cow jumps over the moon.

Ebay apologizes to no one nor do they admit anything that may look deceitful.

Its Ebays play ground and they can say and do whatever they want.

My question is " Why does anyone use Ebay or Paypal for shipping labels " There are numerous other ways of printing labels without raising your blood pressure...
Oh and by the way. Any online labeling service charges 1.69 for a 3oz package with DC.

''We're sorry. You're right. We intentionally misled you, exaggerated and stretch the truth. It will never happen again,'' said nobody at eBay, ever.

My favorite is the 'Fast & Free!'.
So eBay encourages sellers to do free shipping.
So I do here and there for certain items (where I won't lose my shirt;).
And when you look at your listing after it is up, it says in green print 'fast and free!'.
I get the free part, eBay... but fast?  So not only do I have to eat shipping costs to please you, but they have to be high shipping costs to ensure I have lived up to YOUR promise that it will be fast?

Gets funnier everyday:)

ebay is taking credit for the normal online discount that the Postal Service has long offered.

I think Ebay should have spent a little more time before the released this so called promotion.  I never has made any sense why they don't use more forethought when releasing info to the masses.

It was misleading, what they released.  What those here are talking about are the discounts that anyone can get if they print their postage on line.  No matter how much you mail out, if you print the postage online, you can get the rates the OP states and some of the other posters have stated.

Now what Ebay was trying to express was that they were extending the Commercial Plus rate [I think that is what it is call] to everyone until the end of the year.  This rate is NOT offered to just anyone that prints online.  It is a rate for high volume shippers that USPS will offer them.

Ebay has gotten these rates for PowerSellers Silver and above and are also TRS.  Now they are extending these rates to everyone.

The tricky thing is that it isn't good on PM or regular First class parcels.  But on international shipments there can be a real nice savings.  And on other forms of USPS shipping, but I'm not sure which ones it is.  But for the methods I use, I've seen some good savings.

You tend to learn after your experience with ebay that if you peel back the layers there is probably more to the story.  I've always suspected that the 'savings' you receive with ebay label printing, is the same as you can get with logging onto the USPS site and printing yourself anyway.  Since I now sell on eCrater I find that online postage from USPS gives a nice discount on priority and international first class plus you have tracking information for free - you can enter the customer's e mail so they receive the tracking automatically, the label is readable and professional, and international labels contain all your customs information printed on front, any address that is not correct is either corrected or rejected- very helpful .....just go to the USPS

I sell very rarely on Ebay these days but did sell a few items this week and I did get the discount.  I was shocked to say the least.

On my primary, TRS selling account, I don't get that "Holiday discount" baloney. It just shows the normal discounted rate without pretending it's a prize from eBay.  But on my peripheral selling account (for random items I sell that are not in my focus categories), eBay gives me that "Holiday discount" message.  It is strange....

There is still a misunderstanding here.  Certainly Ebay did not explain itself well, of that there is no doubt and it certainly isn't an unusual occurance.

There is a difference between Commercial Base pricing and Commercial Plus.  Base pricing is the rate that anyone can get by printing their postage online through ANY provider.

The same is NOT true for Commercial PLUS.  While you do still enjoy the Base Rate discounts, you get MORE discounts.  NOT deeper discounts on regular FC mail, but deeper discounts on PM and other types of shipping.

Through this link you can see the differences various mail rates for BASE vs PLUS.  Just travel down the list and you will see them.

https://www.usps.com/business/prices.htm?showtab=3
>You
will get some nice savings on some types of priority mail and international rates.  While Ebay certainly didn't describe this well, I welcome the savings and just because they didn't explain things well, I'm certainly not upset because I'm saving money.

Marie got it right - ebay is extending the Commercial Plus discount to all sellers.

Ina did a very detailed article on this recently -
http://www.ecommercebytes.com/cab/abn/y13/m11/i05/s02

It was also explained in detail in the original ebay announcement -
http://announcements.ebay.com/2013/11/sellers-save-up-to-37-on-usp
s-shipping-throughout-the-holidays-with-ebay-labels/

The
only ones ''confused'' appear to be sellers that were already getting the discounts cause they are TRS or high end sellers and now every label reports ''holiday savings'', even though the price is the same.

I dunno, I'm a TRS, I read the ebay announcement and the ecommerce article, and was not surprised.

@OP - I hope you realize that the $1.69 you are paying for 1st class package isn't even available through USPS.com.  The post office charges $2.07, and you have to go to the post office.  But you are right that it's $1.69 through paypal whether it's ebay or not.

But the 1st class package is the exception to the rule.

If you use paypal to ship an item in a priority mail flat rare envelope that is NOT an ebay purchase, it will cost $5.05 vs $4.95 for an ebay purchase.

So there really are 4 price points -

1 - Post Office (most expensive)
2 - USPS.COM - small discounts
3 - Paypal - additional discounts + 1st class postage not regularly offered online
4 - Ebay - additional commercial and commercial+ discounts for some sellers.

This holiday thing just extends the max discount to most sellers through the end of the year.

What does it say on your labels under Pitney Bowes - ComBasPrice or ComPlusPrice.

Mine say ComBasPrice- Commercial Base Price.

Ebay says I am being charged Commercial PLUS Price and this is some glitch that is printing on the shipping label.  They said it would be fixed, but it still is not.

I am supposed to be getting the Commercial Plus Pricing to start with because of TRS.

My labels USED to say ComPlusPrice.

I don't know what to think.  I don't know where to check what the postage should be for a Commerical Plus Discount.

Does anyone have that information?

What do others see printing on their labels?

@lemonade

Normally on Ebay it is TRS sellers that are Silver PS and above that get the Commercial Plus rates, but Ebay has a special going on until the end of the year to allow ALL sellers to take advantage of this discount.

When you have a moment, go back and read the two other posts I have on this thread.  Many seem to be confused about what Commercial Plus rates are.  You need to first understand that before you can determine if you are getting or not getting the discount.

Commercial Plus rates have no effect on regular first class mail.  So that is probably why you are seeing Commercial Base on your labels.

When you have an international package, take a look at your rates then.  Commercial Plus does save you money there and in other places too, just not on FC.

@ Marie

I am TRS and Silver.

I ship mostly Priority.

My labels USED to say ComPlusPrice under the Pitney Bowes on the label.

Now they say ComBasePrice - for all labels I print.

@lemonsand

TRS and Silver doesn't matter right now since Ebay is extending this to everyone till the end of the year.

On some PM rates are the same whether Base or Plus.  I gave a link above that has all the details.  But on other rates especially international there are some pretty good savings.

If you are not getting those savings, then you need to contact Ebay.  Possibly something is wrong with a flag or something on your account.

But for most people posting here, they just needed more information on what is base and what is plus.  It is/was just a misunderstanding of what it applies to.
