eBay Lets Buyer Cancel but Not Review Invoice from Listing Page

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I was just going to pay for an item I purchased on eBay but still had not received an invoice for the items. So I went to my item drop down menu to request an invoice, but there is no option there. Is that removed???

What really pissed me off was an option to 'cancel'! So now that I bought this, can I still change my mind and cancel the purchase? As a seller I wonder if I get my fees back? Worse, I have to go re-list and look for another customer.

This sucks, because if that option is available to the items I sell, then, I've sold nothing until payment arrives. And even then… maybe not.
So, is this "NEW" or did I just not hear about it?

See screen shot attached.
Best Regards,
Barry

Leave it to ebay to not make anything easier for both buyers or sellers. Ebay's motto ''Let's make ebay as difficult to use as possible''. Heaven forbid someone doesn't follow ebay's anal retentive track. Things are constantly disappearing from ebay - policy violations, buyer feedback, buyer's items view in feedback, sellers leaving negative feedback for buyers, and sending revised invoices.

I just recently found I was not able to give a discount to a buyer on an invoice. Ebay would rather the seller lose a sale than give a discount. If the seller doesn't request a refund of FVF's from ebay, the seller relists and sells again, ebay gets double the fees and adds to their GMV.

It is possible the invoice is there, you just have to think like ebay and look in obscure places for it. On second thought it is too scary to think like ebay.

Well if Ebay is going to give buyers that option, guess there won't be any more non paying bidders.  If they don't want to pay, they can just cancel the transaction before the seller files a claim.

I'm not ready to jump on any bandwagon saying Ebay would keep the fees however.  Many times people accuse Ebay of doing this when it isn't Ebay, its the seller hasn't done what they need to do to get a refund of FVF.  Meaning an MC or UID whatever is appropriate.  If the seller doesn't do what they need to do to get the FVF back, then it is no one's fault but the sellers.

The OP may find the invoice link inside the email received notifying them of the purchase.  It is one of the places sellers now have to look if they need to send a 2nd invoice for ANY reason.  Reminder, correction or whatever.  Once a seller sends that first invoice, the invoice option disappears.

Now this is really odd, but sellers can find the "invoice" button at the top of the page if you go to send your buyer an email.  I know it sounds weird, but it really is there if they buyer hasn't paid yet.

Marie I'm not sure what you mean by a correction to invoice. This was exactly what I was trying to do and ebay would not allow it even though the invoice displayed (-) and (+). It doesn't work. A CSR told me since I offered free shipping the invoice couldn't be changed. Doesn't make sense.

@bitbybit. From my experience over the years you can only discount an invoice as much as your shipping. If the discount is more then your shipping price then you will receive a can't be done in red letters. Yes it's very annoying and hasn't worked for many years. At least on my selling account.

The buer can not "cancel" the transaction. I just had this happen last week. When the buyer clicks the cancel button, the seller gets a message saying, The buyer is requesting a CHANGE to their order. I searcehd trying to find a place to agree to the change, there is NO such option. After getting the "Change" request a seller must then go in to the resolution center and file a request to cancel a transaction. When this happened I called ebay- and that was how I was told to do it.

@Marie- Why should it fall on a seller to file for any refund of FVFs? Ebay knows exactly who got paid, how much they got paid, how much they discounted, and how much they refunded. They automatically charge, they should automatically refund.

@bitbybit

Sometimes after an invoice is scent to a customer, something comes up or happens and an adjustment needs to be made to the original invoice.  Most common for me is that they purchase another item.  Ebay has made "uncombining" invoices more complicated and the function hard to find.  And then re-invoicing them is not straight forward anymore either.

Your problem is different.  And I honestly have never tried that function.  I wasn't even aware that you could discount the product price after the sale.  Do you get your portion of the FVF back that you discount too?  I mean if the function were to be working.  In the past when you have done it, did you get your FVF back?

@Denise

That is WONDERFUL news.  Thank you for sharing that with us.  I'm glad to hear you had an experience with it so that you know for sure how it works.

Ebay does auto refund on FVFs for Cancellations and UIDs.  But they NEVER have on partial refunds to buyers.  Right or wrong, that wasn't the question.  It is just a fact.  I didn't say I agreed with it.  I just said how it is.  And if the seller wants a FVF refund, they will have to contact Ebay.  If a seller chooses not to do that, it is completely up to the seller.

Gee.
If a seller cannot make his own decision to adjust an invoice I guess that is OKAY with you folks as ''tat is just the way it is''.
Am I missing something?
MH
I give up, okay- I guess ebay can continue what they are doing and the answer will always be ''that's okay, it's just the way it is''.
Again, I give up on some folks here.
We are incrementally losing the grip on what was once our own businesses- some folks will never learn.

Marie, this was the first time I tried to do a discount on the purchased price. The buyer was confused, supposedly, from an auction relisting. Rather than lose the sale, I tried to discount. The buyer still hasn't paid even though I have gone way and above to accommodate her. I was just going to eat the FVF since it was a small amount. Right now everything is in limbo.

Gee, dsr's- are we now OKAY with them as ''that is just the way it is?''
Managed returns- I guess that will be okay to because that is just the way it is.
And the GSP- when we are ALL IN IT and it is forced- some folks will say ''it's OKAY- it is just the way it is.
Thank you to some folks to LAY DOWN and just accept what ebay does to ALL of us.
You guys are a big part of the problem- WHEN WILL YOU SEE ENOUGH folks????

MH, When sellers see sales plummet, items not being shown, frequent returns and unpaids along with low DSRs, I believe sellers are not going to just say "that is just the way it is". Everyone has their breaking point and can take only so much abuse, anguish and stress. I'm already there and working on changing my focus away from ebay. IMO it takes either a very naive or strong minded resilient seller to continue on with ebay. Of course there is always that Stockholm syndrome which I am sure many sellers on ebay suffer from.

I think you are confusing a simple conversation with complicity. A couple of questions were asked and answered.  No one stated they liked it, agreed with it or otherwise thought it was a great rule.  Nor did anyone except you state they were just laying down and taking it.  Those are your words, no one elses.

Are posters here now no longer suppose to post without some type of disclaimer stating they are not Ebay's lap puppy.  Are we to state everytime we post all the things we don't like about Ebay?  How boring and redundant.

A good observation M. Howler!

"There's no place better" or do they refuse to look?

The same people from eBay lie, week after week in interviews, yet several commenters here, are the bad guys, for pointing out the truth. Some people need to drink the kool-aid.

If you want to make money via eBay, get the concession to sell asbestos trousers to the workers. Big and Tall sizes are especially needed.

Convenient how "RETURN ITEM" and "CANCEL" are right at the top of the drop-down list.

The inability to adjust invoices has always been that way - always.  That is not new.  One option is to invoice the new amount through PayPal (you won't get an adjustment to FVF's) then mark the item as Payment Received when you receive payment.  At least you can make your customer happy that way.

I've complained about this on every survey I get from eBay.  I sell items where I would like to be able to offer tier pricing or volume discounts.  Not easy.

I can understand buyers not being able to change the invoice but sellers should be able to. After all the items are mine. I bought and paid for them, took photos, created descriptions and I am the one paying fees to ebay.

To me it seems that sellers should have far more control over the invoice process.  And I further think that they should do the FVF on the product the same way they do it on S&H.  The FVF is charged to the seller at the time of payment.  That would resolve this issue easily and efficiently.

Might even get Ebay to be a bit more supportive regarding non paying buyers.

I have used that minus sign many times to give a discount....of course, I never checked to see if I was charged for a FVF the listing price!

Ebay should not be allowed to charge fvf's until a sale is completed. It's not an advertising fee- it's a Commission.

@Marie- I had the experience- but would not describe it as Wonderful. It still forces the seller to initiate the cancellation process, which can still be declined/ ignored by the buyer. A Seller would have to then wait 7 days to close the transaction. Unfortunately we deal with a lot of new buyers that are going to think clicking that cancel button is the end of it. It's not an eraser, it's whiteout, the transaction is still there , it just gets messy.

@MASS HOWLER   and RCL--

Really--you two need to get a HOBBY.

When people come here--they are already pretty sure to HATE a lot of ebay practices.  To make like telling the facts is being an "EBay lap puppy"  is just---absurd.

I think the  kool-aid HAS been ingested---by the two of you.
