More Shipping-Label Fraud on eBay

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I have something important to convey to other eBay sellers. This is serious. I had someone access my account and print 56 shipping labels on my transactions pages. This would be a hacker I assume.

Overall, they printed over $3800 worth of labels which then went through PayPal and then to my checking account, overdrafting me into the thousands. Currently, my bank has closed the account and turned back the transfers and my PayPal account stands overdrawn $3800. This is a serious amount of money.

I thought, at first, this was a freak incident and I was the only victim, due to some mistake on my part. But I have since learned, on the eBay discussion forums, that many other sellers have been hit. No one I have spoken to has had their case settled.

I am terrified that I am going to be in this condition for months to come. I am considering leaving the site permanently at this point. I was selling under 3 different IDs and have been there for years, but this is the worst situation I have faced online in many years.

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything from eBay about what this is and why it isn't fixed. Any help anyone could give me would be great appreciated. Advice?
Caroline

You should probably file complaints with appropriate authorities and let them know the only way to get proper resolution is to write auctionbytes or make a huge flap on twitter. People with the identical problem who don't get blamed and brushed off.

You might also try contacting other media outlets. Maybe the Haggler at NYT?

What kind of butchered sites and backdoor customer service freakshow are ebay and paypal running?

Worth noting is if your computer was hacked or it a key log program was on your computer then the information was easily gotten and not Ebay's fault.

One would think that if Ebay was at fault or doing something wrong that there would be thousands of complaints not one or two cases.

Scammers don't just spread their evil a little at a time. They take a big hit all at once then flee.

When we consider how sensitive the eBay/PP ''alarm system'' is when it comes to freezing accounts for ''suspicious activity'' or whenever there's a flurry of sales outside the norm... it certainly makes sense that eBay/PP *also* has the ability to implement the same sort of detection on things like this. I wonder why they haven't done so.

@Annie

Last month we went on a spending spree with our paypal card. Spent almost 8000.00 in a day. You know kitchen appliances are expensive. Never had a problem with the paypal card. Had plenty of money in our account.

The next day I went to the grocery store and bought 75.00 worth. You know to put in that new fridge. Well at check out when I used the paypal card their was a hold on it. Shocking for 75.00 after the day before spending thousands. Had to stand with the cashier while they called paypal's secret number and paypal wanted verification that it was me spending 75.00. Drivers license's was accepted but they never said a word about the thousands of dollars we spent the day before.

In defense of Paypal. We have done similar charging on our Chase card last year. Never a word until the following week buying gas.

I truly think that if one thinks that these card companies are really on top of things I have a bridge in Alaska that needs a new owner.

There's not a single shred of evidence to suggest the victims were phished or keylogged.

Blaming the victim is getting old.

Read this thread. Looks like ebaypal is hacked with mystery authorizations showing up in preferences.

There's also not a single shred of evidence that Fleabay or Pigpay were at fault either.

And that mysterious sucking sound is the sound of money being sucked out of your pocketbook to pay your taxes.

Huh? Whatever. If that ridiculous reply is germane to these incidents of ebay-paypal dishonesty, lack of uniform handling of serious issues, incompetence and overwhelming lack of trustworthiness, I have no idea how.

I see the victims are stacking up like cordwood, and it would appear even people who are not sellers are being victimized and given the runaround. (post #62 in the above thread)

What's the deal with ebay and paypal? Why do things only get straightened out when it makes them look bad? Why can' they treat everyone the same?

That behavior deserves a big fat lawsuit on it's own.

Good thing they have that idiotic kindergarten logo. The rest of the site looks like Chernobyl.

@MLIG: I seriously doubt it. But if it's true, then good-for-you... lucky you. :-/ I think your comparison is a false one, however. Besides, when one has a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a contrary provocateur, it's hard to take that person's arguments seriously. After awhile, they all seem to be the same and easily ignored or dismissed.

@mylifeisgood

There's plenty of evidence of atrocious ebay-paypal dishonesty, incompetence, data leaks, hack attacks, censorship and outright sleazy reactions.
There is nothing to suggest they have changed their ways, in fact, quite the contrary.

As long as you brought up taxes, why do ebay-paypal shelter Billions of $ offshore and paid less in taxes than the ceo made for salary?

I bet the world would also love to know how much they pay for creepy astroturfers to try and run every discussion into the ditch?

There are a few ways to get PayPal to sit up and take notice.

Victims should contact local TV stations consumer reporters, local newspaper consumer reporters, even publicize the issue on twitter and blogs.

PayPal is suddenly very attentive to negative press. It appears this is the best way to get their attention when dealing with them directly fails to get you the restitution you are entitled to.

Ummm, stupid question here, but don't these labels LEAD to locations associated with thief? At some point they become trackable, right? Where are the cops in all this?

Caroline - Sorry this has happened to you. I hope your resolution of it all comes soon.

Are these label fraud crimes using ALL the shipping options: UPS, FEDEX, USPS etc...? Or is it occurring with only a particular shipper. If USPS is used, is it not a federal crime being committed?

What a nightmare.  And I'm not laying the blame anywhere but maybe this would be a good time to make sure we're all following some basic security precautions.  You know, different passwords for different sites, strong passwords, checking to make sure your computer hasn't been compromised, etc.

@mylifeisgood
I think you may want to look at the countless serious technical problems going on at ebay. Ebay has had serious issues concerning their mobile apps and the tehnical people who know are claiming ebay's system is corrupted and has been hacked.
To be safe all ebay users should change their passwords asap the site could have been hacked. Do not store the new passwords on your computer. Ebay needs to get into modern times and require stronger passwords.
Last week descriptions werew missing in item descriptions all over ebay, yet ebay denied it through their customer service reps. May buyers were unable to purchase items, see pictures or do anything on ebay because the moble apps are rolled out with obvious lack of thorough testing and our these appps secure? So @mylifeisgood I think the very serious problems ebay is having with a unstable site and the large number of sellers reporting problems with the site is a red flag. You should not be blaming sellers or buyers on ebay, it is clear ebay has been dishonest and participates in deceptive business practices.I would imagine if this problem grows ebay is going to get some bad press.

Maybe I misread something here, but why would someone use YOUR paypal account to print postage on YOUR transactions?  I can see maybe a bug where ebay charged the wrong account for postage.

People when you get hit with shipping charges that are not yours. Go to the Post Office with the info and stop those packages and have them sent back to you. File charges with the Postal Authorities, local Police Department, Police Department in whatever city you suddenly found yourself living in (according to the labeling in the email that Paypal sent you). The FCC for fraud on the internet using Fcc licensed bands to commit the fraud. The Federal Department that handles sites like Paypal and the of course, the Better Business Bureau. But before you do all that, the minute you get that first notice of someone hacking your Paypal account to mail items, go change your passwords at Paypal first, Ebay next and then a minute later change it again. While you are doing that call Paypal to stop the theft and then Ebay to report the theft (that probably won't do a whole lot of good, but at least you will have reported it immediately to Ebay.)
