Seller Says eBay Growth Advisors Push Promoted Listing Ads

By: Reader

Dear Ina,

I have been contacted by eBay growth advisor, more than once. Each time, I feel like it has been a rally to increase the promoted listings, more money in eBay's pockets and less in ours.

It's a big problem with eBay right now. It's either promote these days or don't get sales.

CBW says "Question: Why are the people that constantly complain about Ebay on here."

Because it is a great place to vent and expose their (as the Spy author wrote) enshittification of the marketplace.  Perhaps if these marketplaces cleaned up their acts and got a grip on their greed the complaining would stop.

Here’s something else you don’t know and can’t know Tool, and it applies to everybody who thinks they’re ’winning’ despite not kowtowing to eBay’s ‘advice’.  Despite any claims of unmitigated ‘success’ , how many MORE buyers that might be interested in buying even specifically niched items don’t ever even see them because of eBay’s throttling?

There’s a saying that directly applies to your boasts though - ignorance is bliss.

EXACTLY!  And these are lost sales for not only the seller but also for eBay.  And it is rigged search.  And if I am looking for a camera I don't want to see camera straps, camera lenses, camera bags cluttering my search. When I do I just get frustrated and either go to Amazon or Google search.

Marketplaces, if you want ad revenue buy a newspaper.

eBay doesn’t invent anything. They copy practices they see. Most of their  direction comes from forever chasing Amazon’s tail. That’s where one day free shipping comes from. And pay for play placement is an Internet thing. I tried to find a hotel website and had to go through a whole page of travel services sites before I actually found the hotel’s page. All of those services paid  for placement ahead of the site you wanted.

@Snapped

I highly doubt any Leatherman tools are being "throttled"

I'm a hard core collector that keeps an eye on both newly listed and sold items.

The market isn't that saturated that eBay needs to throttle any Leathermans listed.
