Buyer Disgusted after Etsy Seller Delays then Cancels Order

By: Reader

Dear Ina
A small issue: What would you do when an Etsy seller takes your order and says they will deliver between ten and eleven days later, and on the delivery date, you check and see that it has been moved a week later, and you contact them and they cancel the order, and say they are unable to deliver, but do give you a refund?

I particularly wanted some (items) I saw and it stopped me purchasing elsewhere. Further there is no way to give a review about this as this option stop when one receives a refund, and there is no option to contact Etsy on this particular issue, so it allows not report. It has put me off ever buying with Etsy.
Kind regards,
Rosie

I have no idea what kind of product was ordered, but this looks like it could be a delay in supplies reaching the shop owner.  Etsy corporate had NOTHING to do with the situation.

If the order had been moved up the buyer would have received an email informing them of the delay. Delays happen and the seller communicated the change. We don't know what or how the buyer communicated their dissatisfaction with the seller but I assume the seller opted to cancel the order based on the buyer's response. Totally within their rights to do so. Karen got a refund but is unhappy because they couldn't leave a review. Congrats to the seller. Bullet dodged.

etsy has an option that sellers can extend out delivery dates after a date has been given to buyers?
You can't contact etsy?

I do wonder what feedback Rosie would of left and how this event and seller was the turning point that she wont be shopping on etsy. I used to shop alot on etsy. I love the handmade, the styles ..kustoms  you can't get off the rack. Or from a lamer big box store. That is appealing and etsy sellers generally make me happy. For me if I don't have a deadline and it doesn't come right away I'm ok..as long as I would still be covered from loss. And I don't hassle sellers because its a thankless job. Sometimes things go south..as long as I get my money .. On any venue...I don't care about feedback.

Why is feedback important when you are whole?
iMO if you have a problem with the seller and you aren't owed any money then why don't you just contact the seller and tell em what's on your mind? Or then file with the bbb or the ftc? If you were on Twitter someone at etsy would of contacted you by now I bet.

crafters Are dropping like flies.  I see more of the ones I love to shop with pinned down from some policy or program. Less indie and more control. Do yourself a favor and just talk with them. Life happens and out of all the shopping I've done I fail to see why feedback matters.

If it was a hand made item, and considering there are so many delays by suppliers these days, and they intended to honor your purchase but simply extended to date I don’t understand the issue.

I’m expecting that your email to the seller was not very kind or respectful that they chose to cancel the sale!

I sell larger items and sometimes my best efforts in getting the necessary supplies is thwarted by availability I reach out to the buyer and explain the situation.  I am a small business and can not stock every size variation, styrofoam sheets and large rolls of bubble;  it happens and unless it was something time sensitive everyone is understanding of my challenges.

You got your money back, why be spiteful and want to leave a bad review is the important question to my mind!

Same exact thing happened to me recently, except what really irritated me is that the seller ignored my message asking why they waited so long (two weeks) to issue my refund. I tried to leave feedback, but like above, was unable to. I tried multiple times to reach Etsy via social media and was ignored.  I tried Etsy's website chat where Raphael rephrased my issue and then paused for an extended period.  When I asked if they were still there, I was told the chat was being disconnected since I did not respond.  Respond to WHAT?  Nothing was asked of me!  I went through BBB and finally was told that feedback is not allowed on orders that have been refunded.  So, the seller can take a two-week interest-free loan on my money, and I am not allowed to have an opinion about it?!  I know that inventory issues happen, and that's not what I'm irritated about.  I don't think the seller should have waited two weeks to notify me, and once they did, the very least they could have done was reply to my polite message asking why.  Then Etsy did not provide any level of service whatsoever.  Mistakes happen, that's fine, but when there is absolutely ZERO customer service (both from the seller and from Etsy), I don't keep giving you my money.  Unfortunately, places with decent customer service have gotten very tough to find.

*** Another complaint without details. ***

Without details about the transaction as to what was ordered, if the order was a “custom” job or not….and why the shipment was delayed by the Seller, I consider this topic as “moot”.

The OP did a poor job in stating their case.

The marketplaces are harsh on sellers who mess up. There is a metric that needs to be met before punishment is imposed.

Sellers have always had backorders. Sometimes it is because one was miscounted when inbound or damaged in their fulfillment center or some other valid reason.  Other times, it is because they sold it for a higher price elsewhere, or worse, the price was too low and they don't wish to lose money.

Either way, sellers SHOULD be responsible to buyers at a minimum to give an official apology and explanation.  That information should be recorded by the marketplaces.  Depending on the item, issue and severity of the cause, compensation is always a positive towards customer retention (LTV).

It’s unfortunate but there are 2.1 million sellers on Etsy and most of us are hard working honest people who hate getting lumped in with a few unscrupulous ones.
