Seller Says eBay UK Unfairly Charges Fees on GSP Shipping

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I wasn't aware until recently that eBay (UK) charge promotion fees based on the total cost including shipping when sending via GSP (Global Shipping Program).

This seems really unfair since a seller doesn't get any of the GSP money!

I can't seem to find much information about it but it shows up as I use a fixed rate of 3.5pct and about a week ago two items sold at the same price, One via GSP.

When I looked at the order record it showed the promotion fee was slightly higher for the one that went abroad. It seems to always be the case looking back through orders.

I figure it might be worth flagging up.
J.

What is this promotion fee? Is it different from listing fees? Tell me more.

OP’s discovered the eBay version of compounded interest.

They charge sellers a final value fee on all shipping costs when they have nothing to do with shipping an item and then a promotion fee (if assessed) based on the (now artificially) inflated total ‘value’ of the sale.

Naturally, though no less “unfair’, if the shipping is comparatively higher for an international v domestic order, the ‘fees’ (FVF and then promotion fee) will total higher too regardless if the comparable items sold for the same price themselves and the promotion ‘rate’ is the same %.

That would be the case whether one uses the previously named GSP or not, though one may realize some savings vs shipping internationally independently.  It’s all based on assessing fees on a shipping cost, whatever that is and however it’s charged.
