Etsy Gives Priority to Items Closest to Buyers in Some Countries

why would that severely hurt the seller?
The closer the seller,assuming he is not dropshiping,the sooner the buyer will get the item he ordered.
also when it comes to return,it is more convenient(cheaper) for both buyer and seller (if seller is picking up the return shipping)

I live in Canada and closer does NOT mean cheaper shipping, I can ship for less to the US than I can across Canada. As a buyer, the local pool of items I want is very small, I need the US sellers.  Etsy has messed up the search engine so bad, it is so time consuming, is it even worth the pain to search?

I made $10+K less in 2023 than the year before which is devastating to my life.  However, this also means that Etsy's revenue from me has fallen by 50+% as well, talk about shortsighted!  Where are the sales, well now I bloody know - they're being syphoned off. SHAME ON ETSY

Just another stupid idea that hurts sellers bottom line and Etsy's at the same time.  Not sure who comes up with these stupid ideas but they all add up to everyone being hurt financially.

What's more, its not what we pay for - we pay for a N. American or Global audience.   IF I wanted to go local I would ditch Etsy and go FB Marketplace or Kijiji.  IF buyers are so committed to shopping local, they would be turning to shows, marketplace and Kijiji as well.  Buyers go to Etsy to see a variety of items from around the world to choose from.

Somehow they think people are stupid or that they're the only game in town and made decisions as though there weren't enough local options including of that's what ppl are committed to.  Its just beyond me how they think their decision making is for the good of them or their shareholders. Makes me wonder if the latter even knows this is going on!

Not sure there is anyone over there thinking clearly - or - looking at the big picture.

Ebay -a buyer can limit search within x number of miles,country,worldwide,but Etsy search is rather ?backward,simple?I dont use the search,a lot of listings show up first which has nothing to do with what I am looking for.
May be you can suggest to Etsy for future search improvement

Many of the items I sell on Etsy are digital, so location & distance are irrelevant. I wonder if the localisation parameters are adversely affecting where I rank in search results.

*** The S&P 500 ***

On Wall Street, Etsy became a member of the stock index S&P 500, which becomes a prestigious ranking for companies as investors will flock to those companies as solid investments.

Outside of a required market cap, I heard an analyst on CNBC say that each company in the S&P is given a score for other factors such as the “carbon footprint” score.

I truly believe that Etsys only concern for a Carbon Footprint Reduction has to do with their standing on Wall Street. If Etsy scores to low, they could ultimately be kicked out of the S&P Index, which happened to Elon Musk and Tesla. Musk got kicked out of the Index because of all the harassment charges against him and his company.

And if Etsy is seeing slower growth, Etsy will do what they can to keep investors interested, in Etsy.

@Stone Cutter  true and its been like that for some time.  However forcing it as a default when we are all paying the same money (some more outside of the US) is simply wrong.  

They can encourage people to change the country filter which has always been there is one thing, to force it as a default setting is another.  Their  S & P and investor standing also hinges on their quarterly reports which can only be going down, even with the creative ways in which they are trying to get more money out of sellers while limiting their exposure and thus their sales and thereby reducing Etsy fees collected.  

Stocks are falling because investors being rattled with the 11% layoffs without solid reasons which  obviously suggests they're in trouble.   It has been suggested, based on an email I got just the other day that  their competition is tougher now because of Temu of all places which Etsy shouldn't want to be perceived as a competitor of to be honest, but that ship has sailed and they did nothing to try to keep the quality of products up.  

Who owns the most Etsy stock?
Largest shareholders include Vanguard Group Inc, BlackRock Inc., Capital International Investors, State Street Corp, Bares Capital Management, Inc., VTSMX - Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Investor Shares, Van Eck Associates Corp, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, MOAT - VanEck Vectors Morningstar Wide Moat ETF

Truth is that Etsy got cocky because they got high off the big COVID boon, and things have gone steadily down since then because of costly choices they made during that time, and the fees they exerted on shops thinking that that level of buyer involvement was because they were so great, rather than a pragmatic approach realizing that that would have to change and things would level out.

As I said, Tesla was kicked out. Google “Tesla kicked out of S&P ESG 500”. The information is everywhere on the ‘net.  The article on CNBC sums it up…

It said that Teslas “lack of a low-carbon strategy” and “codes of business conduct”, along with racism and poor working conditions reported at Teslas factory in Fremont, California, affected the score…..”

Tesla was kicked out in May of 2022 due to a “low score”.

Etsy could easily lose their “standing” if they don’t comply with the requirements of the S&P Index. I do not believe Etsy would care about the environment unless they needed to for some business reason.

Also, I’ve heard in the past that some States give Tax breaks to environmentally conscience businesses. So who knows what business deals Etsy has with the State of New York.

As soon as CEO Silverman took over in 2017, he began with the whole environmental conscience BS that made no sense to me for Etsy, as a business, because why would Etsy care? I really do think Etsy was setting themselves up for further advancements with Wall Street back in 2017.

When an investor makes a straight investment into an S&P 500 index fund, it benefits Etsy and helps to drive up the Stock price which is more beneficial than finding individual investors to purchase its stock.

Example: I have money in the S&P SPDR fund which allows me to invest into multiple companies. But not everyone can be a part of the S&P. Companies need to be the best in their league to be a part of that fund.

Thats because corporations are implementing ESG plans within their companies and report it in their SEC filings. Its from a united nations initiative. Corps follow that because it makes their brand better. You should be able to see the breakdown in their annual 10-K filings
