eBay Seller-Accepted Offers Remain Listed for Sale

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
For the past few days buyers have been sending me offers and when I accept them, the item no longer goes to the "sold awaiting payment" section, it stays active.

I called eBay and they told me it is a new rollout that the item will stay active until the buyer pays and that other buyers can come along in the meantime and make a higher offer or buy it outright. Then the buyer whose offer I accepted will be out of luck.

This is going to cause so much hate from buyers, it is unreal.

Please keep me anonymous if you post this. Thanks and love your blog!

This would not be necessary at all if eBay would just make immediate payment a requirement on all offers no matter which side originates.  Once accepted by either party, the payment is deducted from the buyer's payment method on file.

The seller needs to adjust their settings.

You can ask for immediate payment on offers if you choose to do so.

I pass on listings that have that requirement because I don't want to commit to a payment method until I have to pay. . .

@OP: If someone accepts an offer, contact them and advise them that until they pay, your item will still be available to all other potential buyers pursuant to a new eBay rule.

OK, I make a $100 offer on an item

I select my payment method, seller accepts offer.

The payment method I selected doesn't have enough to cover the charge

Now what happens?

From this post I guess it still stays active, but is there any recourse from eBay on my account since my payment method wasn't accepted?

ebay is slowly rolling out to buyers when they make a offer that the payment method they select will be auto debited if offer is accepted. It is a being shown as a mandatory selection when making a offer to some buyers you either select payment method or you can't make a offer...

Ebay being Ebay,a buyer who makes an offer and is accepted, and does not pay promptly, could continue to find something better and/or cheaper, leaving you hanging.
You have nothing to lose, someone could comes along and make a better offer and pay promptly.

The point is, when you make an offer, and the offer is accepted, pay for the item, plain and simple. Buyers Monkey around making offers that are not serious ones, they are just trying to see how low the Seller will go or again just playing Monkey Business. That's what Ebay has turned into - from existing as a viable on-line business to a Monkey Business.

Their ridiculous rules, poorly crafted site changes and incredibly poorly written software disasters that have plagued the site since its inception, which regardless what others say, are still here. Ebay is losing both Buyers & Sellers (and Ebay even admits it!) because of its ineptness to properly run a business. At some point, Ebay will get its comeuppance and they'll just be another story on Wikipedia.

when we go to a store and make an offer which the clerk accepts,we are not obliged to buy,so why should Ebay force us to buy?

@OhCalcutta: So you go into a store, make an offer, it's accepted, and then you turn around and walk out? How many stores have you been banned from entering?

iheartjacksparrow:

I bet there are 100's.

If an offer is accepted than they buyer should pay. Immediate payment enforces that fact. Pure and simple.

As a buyer I have my payment on file and when I make an offer on something I want, and the seller rejects it I move on. If they accept it it automatically pays the seller and I get the item. Why don't they just make it like that and not screw around with buyers making tentative offers and not following through or sellers hoping for the extra however many bucks they were expecting and not closing the deal.

All this immediate payment talk is great unless the buyer is a high volume purchaser (like me) who buys quite a few items from a single seller over the course of a week or so.

The sellers that I regularly buy from have their eBay settings set for combined purchases over the course of seven to fourteen days.

Simply a money grab, eBay wants their added fee on buyers' shipping costs.

While eBay lines its pockets with unearned revenue streams that are always increasing on a year by year basis, it is always the buyers and sellers who end up paying for this nonsense.

eBay's continued quest for more unearned profits has seen me close up all of my eBay stores years ago and is now driving the multiple thousands of dollars of purchases that I make annually elsewhere.

Really doubt I am the only one who has either entirely stopped buying from eBay, or, has greatly reduced their purchases from the venue.

While the venue continues to offer a fairly wide range of vintage and out-of-production products, which are often very difficult to search for and/or locate elsewhere, in many cases, I have found that eBay has the highest item pricing and shipping costs for current production items.

As a buyer, the only that matters  to me is the landed purchase price (i.e., the combined item price(s), shipping cost(s), and sales tax).

While eBay was once my go to place for nearly everything that I wanted to buy, it hasn't been this way for many years now.

----------
for most small retail stores, people would bargain, they are not obliged to buy,and they are not banned, bargainer at least show an interest in the product, they may come back and buy later.
In some societies, they expect you to bargain,I WAS in Egypt and they expect you to bargain which I think turn tourists off
r big chain stores, there are no make an offer,so you either buy or not buy at the listed price

Some would ask for a discount if they pay with cash not credit card, and the retailer would accept.
I have also seen instances where the retailer said if you pay with credit card,I WOULD charge sales tax !!!!!!!!!!

This isn’t a ‘processing’ issue, it’s one of ‘character’.

Accepting an offer - by both parties - effectively establishes a ‘contract’, the ‘terms’ of which (beyond agreed amount) also define payment ‘process’ already established.

Should those terms not require an immediate payment, then both buyer AND seller would otherwise be ‘expected’ to adhere to the contract and conform to whatever other ‘deadlines and restrictions’ apply.

For the buyer, that means payment by whatever deadline applies before the contract would then be made null by breach. (No payment).

For the seller, that also means there is an expectation that no OTHER offer will be entertained in the meantime.

Therefore, if there is a lack of character by either party (failure to keep their ‘promise’) to consummate the contract by either party (through payment and delivery of promised item under contracted conditions), that constitutes a breach which can be ‘prosecuted’ if desired.  Alternately, simply ignored.

Meaning another offer then can be ‘legally’ accepted.  Or in the case of the buyer, another offer made elsewhere.

But not until the breach occurs.  That’s the character part.

eBay’s current ‘processes’ already facilitate all these potentials.  Well, except for the ‘prosecution’ part - where they fail to hold either party accountable for their lack of ‘character’ should the buyer not pay, (a ‘report’?  Gimme a break.), or the seller accept another offer (because eBay gets their nut either way).

And that’s eBay’s lack of character at work.

There must be good reasons why Ebay changes its policy,it must have seen too many cases where the buyers have no intention of paying but move on to make more offers to other sellers ,some consider that as a form of entertainment,

bargain a good price, then walk out? ("ok, i'll come back another time for that price"------ just trying to figure out the line to tell the store)
sounds like a new seller, e-commerce OR brick and mortar.
I know if i did that in a store , when i was a kid, my parents would have disciplined me!

so, e-bay doesnt always take the side of the buyer?  lol

This requirement is great for non payers

eBay should keep track of non payers and made them have a payment method on file.

In 23 years I've never not paid for something I've bought on eBay.

So why make me have a payment method on file, I've proven I can be trusted.

eBay's just too lazy or cheap to get it programmed into the system.
