Strong Dollar Taking a Toll on Seller's Summer Sales?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
My eBay sales are lower this summer, so far, compared to last year; part of the reason is fewer people are buying online as I've read in the news (for various reasons).

My specific question or topic, regards the current strong dollar and its potential negative effects on US based ecommerce businesses, such as myself, who sell overseas. (I have no figures ready to compare this years' overseas orders with last year).
Thank you,
Mark

I cannot prove it takes a toll but logically, from the increased postage costs shipping overseas to the weakness of the currency they're buying it, logically it will hurt sales.  And that's leaving out their own issues they may have financially with the economy in their country, along with things like the German law making it difficult to ship there.  I still sell overseas, but it's becoming less and less of my business just because of the barriers.  (and leave out the unreliability of the mail services).

***Guest CEOs’ on CNBC say the same***

This past week was a big earnings week on Wall Street. I heard that many U.S. companies say the same...the strong dollar is making products too expensive for Overseas markets.

The reality...As so much of the world is worried about inflation and a slowing economy, overseas investors are finding “safe haven” investments in U.S. Treasury Bonds which has created a strong “Greenback” dollar. The U.S. has a power house economy....they’ve never defaulted on their debt....Investors feel their investments are safe; driving up the dollar.

I am in the UK selling vinyl records and CDs. I am currently selling much more to the USA despite postage costs. Sales to the EU fell off a cliff when EU sales tax  started and have never recovered. These things go in cycles so I have learned to be grateful  for the ups and downs of currencies but I do worry about all the ;political interference in business
