Looking for Places to Sell Old and Rare Books

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Alas, Bookogs is now deceased.

Besides Abe Books (now owned by Amazon sheezzzzzzzzz) or eBay, are you aware of any other marketplaces for very old/rare books (1800s)?

Thanks!
Jim

I have a great place/way to sell rare and valuable things now that I have quit selling on they usual Big Net platforms. I unfortunately cannot tell you however because if I do THEY will find out about it and then THEY will try and extract their cut and THEY won't getting squat from me anymore. Also THEM will find out as well and THEM will flood this oasis with junk to the point that your valuable and interesting things will never be seen. Sorry but THEY and THEM are really messing up everything. Good luck though!

Thanks Michael! I will check out Biblio!

Another friend suggested Alibris

95% of the books I have are 100+ years old so ... no ISBNs to help,
and a niche market to be sure ...

Thank you Ina for hosting my question  :-)

RE: Fried Chicken Addiction

So you know something, and decided to tease us by saying so without sharing the relevant information asked by the OP?  That's a tease, and not fun at all.  On top of it, you willfully cut yourself from future sales by acting like that...  Who's THEY/THEM that you seem so scared from as to not even use their names (like Voldemort)?

Been selling books for many years and unfortunately in my experience the only site that gets consistent action is eBay, a site I despise more and more as every day goes by

Thanks spooky ... many of mine are such "niche" books ...
Well... I guess I can put them up at fixed-price on eBay...

I've been selling there for 20+ years but always on the auction side of the house..
So I wasn't really thinking that way ... I probably should... use AbeBooks, WorthPoint,  or whoever to get some pricing data then just start tossing up a bunch of FP listings!

Maybe it's time to start some fixed-price stuff....

...  unless I can find  "Fried Chicken Addiction"  ...
and talk  "THEY/THEM" out of the platform name    ;-)

I appreciate you Spooky!

i've been selling books online for about 20yrs.  right now i sell on ebay, abebooks, amazon and biblio of which ebay and abe are the ones that do the best.  amazon is hap-hazard and probably not good for books from the 1800's, biblio i do because there is no subscription charge and it's the same homebase upload file as abe.

alibris did alright for awhile, but faded off so i dropped them for several years.  i recently tried them again for awhile when they offered a free subscription, but only sold about 2 books in 6 months.  i think their main business these days are textbooks.

i definitely think that fixed price is the way to go.

for book prices both for purchase or selling info, i use bookfinder.com ... they search all major book for sale databases (ABE, BIBLIO,AMAZON, etc)...

Thank you  mindelec   and   gyanarthi I appreciate your wisdom!

Ebay would charge  14.6% commission (I think)
AbeBooks only 8% commission capped @ $40, but .......... $25/month

I'll weigh that out...

I didn't realize bookfinder was so powerful!
I might just go with eBay Fixed-price and available for best offer
and see how it goes!

JimBob
Biblio.com is 12% with no monthly charge, or 8% and $10 monthly with under 10K books listed and up with more books
It's an excellent venue for rare books - with a special collection for books selling over $100
the only downside for me is having to be listed world wide and I only want to sell in US... but outside US shipping prices can be adjusted to make sales unlikely... so I may rethink my position and list more there..

on abe and biblio you are forgetting their payment fee

''For all credit card sales through the AbeBooks.com and AbeBooks.co.uk web sites, an external payment service fee of 5.5% is charged for an order up to US $500. Orders that exceed US $500 in total value are charged at 5.5% for the first $500, and 3.5% for the remainder of the order ($500.01 and up).''

''Biblio.com, Biblio.co.uk booksellers in billing option A: 5% of the overall transaction plus USD $0.35 per transaction.''

and as you said the subscription fee has to be factored in to each sale.  can really up the percentage taken depending on how many books you sell a month.

Rare Book Hub is a great source of information on book collecting and marketing.  Great articles and insights by a variety of folks in the industry.

Thank you all for sharing your tips with me ...
I am sorting through the volumes now using  BookFinder  to figure out what is worth the trouble  ;-)

Then will move on to evaluating the venue options!

JimBob - don’t forget you have a “best offer” option available if you’re set on (ugh) eBay.

This will likely unleash some ‘discussion’ about the merits (or lack of) the best offer process, - from buyers and sellers - but it can be ideal for the type items you offer, as opposed to many items it wouldn’t work well for, and a good way to achieve without revealing a take or leave fixed price ‘bottom line’ you need to achieve.  GL to you.

With or without a Best Offer button on a listing, Ebay allows buyers to send a best offer via email to sellers.

IMHO having a Best offer on a listing tells all your buyers that you know you have your item priced too high.  That is simply my opinion and why I never use them.

i agree with marie on best offer.  it's feels to me like putting a big "do not pay this amount" on my listing.  i very occasionally use it.  when i get emails asking if i will go lower, i usually send a reply of "i'm sorry but my prices are not negotiable", often they then go and buy it at my asking price.

Thank you all!
I sell a fair amount of stuff via eBay and have never received and offer...
I wonder if it is somehow disabled in my (very old) template...

I could always list for a month or so and if not sold THEN explicitly turn it on...
I'd be good with that I think .................   ;-)

thanks!
Jim
