Small Biz Owner: USPS Shipping Hikes Are Killing Sales

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
How many of us small business owners are hurting and looking at closing down because USPS shipping increases are killing our sales?

It's still the only game in town for small inexpensive items, but shipping costs have killed my sales.

We're stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one.
USPS Shipping Hikes Are Killing Sales absolutely,
and UPS kills my merch in shipping and the hours the shipping desk is open at the hub is only HALF what it should be.
USPS goes from 8:30 am til 5 pm,while our UPS hub is only open from 1 pm til 6pm. Very inconvenient.

It just wiped out about $25,000 in sales for me, no more fishing rods as of April 3rd. As far as small items, the rates keep going up, sales go down. I don't sell half of the inventory I did 5 yrs ago, just no money in it, I don't even buy it to sell.
The USPS just got a bail out and change the retirement plan(which is what put them in the hole), so they should be lowering rates.
Problem with UPS is they charge to pick up, my hub is 15 miles away and now I have to buy boxes to ship in which have tripled in price. I can only sell 2 pc fishing rods because once you hit 49" the shipping rate doubles.

I wish Trump had held to his pledge to force the UPU to recognize an economy the size of China's does not need to be subsidized by the US taxpayers. No way Joe Xiden holds them to task.

Amazon should get into the shipping business...for customer pick-ups.
it has trucks in almost every neighborhood everyday...why not deliver AND pick up?
They could do it on a regional basis at least.

@Shanna  Trump was more concerned with making sure mail in ballots were disappeared by installing his donor at USPS. As far as China is concerned, see the results of his tariffs if you want to see the effects of    his ''pledges''. You spelled Biden incorrectly.

Depending on what and where you are selling is a big factor on how your sales are doing. Sales in a lot of areas are falling is because of a recession. Yes, it has already started. Most people have less money to spend on items that are the wants. We have seen our sales fall for these reasons as well as for some scumbags who are making homemade fakes of trademarked/copyrighted items that Ebay will not remove. USPS just like UPS and Fedex are all raising their rates to cover expenses and so on. USPS is still the cheapest overall when it comes to shipping on most small items without many of the surcharges like UPS has. USPS does not have the machines to auto process the larger packages thus a way to save money was to create the surcharges on the larger items.  President Trump did a great thing with the International Postal Union over rates. USPS has seen a drastic decrease if EPackets from China after Trumps deal was made with the IPU over rates thus saving USPS money as well as helping US small businesses.

You don't have to take your packages to the UPS hub, if you live close to a UPS mail box center, they will accept your package and give you a receipt, no extra charge.

@Ophelia1
The UPS store and shipping center are next to each other, as far as the drop off locations, they have a 16" length limit. So they won't take the long boxes.

Yeah, we lost a thriving International business, shipping diecast cars to Europe and Australia, when the USPS decided they needed to match UPS and Fed EX prices. All at once, what was a $35 shipment, became a $70 shipment, for the same item, and no more sales.

I remember something about taking a reasonable profit and getting MOST of the business or trying to get every last penny and LOSING most of your business.

Great leadership for the USPS.

It is also happening, now, stateside. Trying to get all the market will bear for everything, is not a long term solution. Trying to separate yourself from your competition, through costs and service is.

As someone said, they have gotten the right to fix the pension plan, so the need for constant price increases is now only tied to excess greed.

Nice.

Yes, it gets worst now twice a year and this has to stop. Please support our call for what we call Shipping Neutrality! Same USPS rates for everybody will preserve 100,000s of small businesses and is needed. https://blog.hobbydb.com/2022/04/24/shipping-costs-kill-100000s-of-sma

@billly, wasnt it tRutin who nominated no-de-Joy? the guy with 1000+ conflicts of interest between his own business and the USPS?

anyway, my man, dont let it get to you....as they USED to say
'no point in arguing with fools'

that first comment about politics makes little sense, unless they are really referring to UPU, a back channel delivery service in communist China?

The U.S. has an employee shortage. Companies everywhere are paying more for their employees, even USPS is hiring at higher wages. Just heard this morning that retailer Target, is hiring at  $24/hourly. And it’s just not wages, as healthcare costs a boatload too, for all companies .

Sellers at smaller price points will not survive. This story has been brewing for years! I’m surprised it’s taken so long for sellers to see the reality. It’s about what you sell and your competition. Bad business models will die.

Why would a buyer purchase a greeting card from Etsy for $6.00 bucks when they can purchase a card from a grocery store at $2.50?

And those fishing rods? I can purchase a fishing rod from my local “Cabelas”. I don’t have to pay for shipping and I get to walk into a store to actually see what I am purchasing.

Latest economic data...more US consumers are shopping at malls while e-commerce sales begin to slide. As a consumer, I’m tired of being disappointed with online purchases, and I have no doubt other consumers feel the same.

Online sales are no longer the place for consumers to save money.

@Stone Cutter - At the closest USPS location to me they have one lady handling all counter customers. They stopped doing passports because it takes too much time for the counter to handle passports and all the people coming in for stamps or whatever.

@ebayout - I've stated before I think Amazon should start a service similar to the USPS' First Class Mail and First Class Package delivery. I see an Amazon truck on my street every day. All a seller would have to do is place an "order" the day before to have the packages picked up the next day. Or maybe we can get Elon Musk involved to start his own mail service.

At my local post office, there is a big sign out front that says “Now Hiring”. I’ve lived in my neighborhood for 13 years and I’ve never seen this type of sign. The crew at USPS tell me they can’t find people to hire as the job market is just that tight.

***And more data...older workers***

During Covid, a large percentage of older Americans completely dropped out of the workforce and never returned, which left a big employment hole for companies to fill. I noticed this with my local post office. The two older clerks who had been with USPS for years are no longer there. They quit during Covid.

Higher wages to attract employees means higher postage prices.

We will look back with fond memories in a couple of years and realized how good we all had now. Shipping cost is the Achilles' heel of ecommerce, even the big boys (Amazon/Walmart) are feeling the pain on the bottom line.

Brick and mortar stores do no longer have millions and millions of dollars tight up in inventory for purchasing.  Nowadays if you need something you would have to go to a number of stores and, if lucky, find what you are looking for.

You may not save money ordering online in the future, but you will save a lot of valuable time.

The best business model are Brick & Mortar stores who also have an online presence. From Walmart, Home Depot, Target, to Nordstroms', these retailers can give me inventory numbers for the products located near my home, and many will give isle numbers on where to find goods. This makes Brick & Mortar easy to navigate if I know what is in stock and where to find what I am looking for. Also, "Pickup" and "Delivery services" give buyers other options.

And this is our competition...an easy and convenient way to shop at Brick & Mortar without having to pay for shipping.

If you sell everyday type goods on eCommerce sites you are basically a dead man walking.
The price of shipping is going up and it will keep going up as long as we have the the bidenflation so if a person can go to the big box and find what they want without shipping and pick up other items as well.
