Is It Legal to Run a Marketplace without Customer Service?

Dear Ina,
In regards to the story about the lady who got ripped off by Facebook, it's totally believable and totally probably true - I have no doubt there is no way to contact anybody at Facebook.

If you ask me, it should be illegal to run a business where you're not able to be contacted.

I tried to delete my profiles multiple times and was unable to do it because the site would reject me back to the previous page. I finally just gave up and quit accessing Facebook deleted it off my phone and have decided it is evil.

However, they're not the only ones out there doing this. Lots of large companies are not respecting the customer policy of old. If I didn't treat my customers while I wouldn't be in business today but it seems that these larger companies with big pockets could care less.

Just last year T-Mobile took 300 plus dollars out of one of my bank accounts and they've never returned the money to me even though I contacted them, most times and went back to the store multiple times until it got to the point it was so frustrating that I was afraid that I would make a terrible and angry mistake if I went back anymore.

My sympathies to the lady who got ripped off by Facebook. You're not the only one. Stay strong and keep doing what you're doing.
B.

Theres no law that says you must have a customer service dept - its just common sense to have one.

Sadly, none of the large selling platforms have CS depts that are any good.

When you call Amazon, you get Indian script readers
When you call eBay, you get Filipino script readers
Mercari has no phone - just idiots who you can email that dont read what you wrote
Poshmark CS agents are email only - and you get smug answers in return

DO any of them care? No - and why should they - they have all the millions and you (and I) dont.

As for your T-Mobile issue - if you have all your paperwork (and you are in he right) 1) actually post a complaint on Facebook, then 2 go to small claims court.

These platforms give LOTS of money to both sides of the aisle and therefore get "protection". Hell, Amazon BARELY even pays any tax, eBay steals from anyone smaller then they are and the list just goes on and on.

Sorry for your issues.

How did Facebook rip her off ? Or was it a seller on facebook who ripped her off ? Pay by credit card and you can dispute the charge if there is a problem. File a police report. If you don't take steps to protect yourself, you are leaving yourself open to being ripped off. When you do business on a communist platform, that is what happens.

Isn't this what small claims court is for?  Costs to file are low and you don't need a lawyer.  I you can state your case clearly (exactly what happened and what redress you want), you will often win OR the defendant will contact you and you'll get what you want that way.  You don't want to debate some extraneous issue like the defendant's lack of customer service, just what happened and what you want them to do to make it right.

@pace306 at least Poshmark responds. I always get a response from them and they haven't been snarky, but I can see where they could respond with an attitude. Depends on how the inquiry was sent. Regardless, they should respond cordially.

Facebook should be done away with. There are other sites to keep in touch with love ones and friends. I had a problem as an admin for a property owners community, accessing our community page. Had to use a "backdoor" access and I can't tell you how many times I tried to contact Facebook and ZERO response. Had to delete the page and create a new one. Luckily, the community was understanding.

Ebay CS....don't get me started.....
My power supplier.....same as what @pace306 said about Amazon...and they're all named Jeff.

As Customer Service is not required, as a business you should have it. But how you run that service is key to your business success.

It's legal but certainly not ethical what FB is doing on that MP.   I keep seeing people in the forums saying how they "never have any problems."  The answer is they never had any problems yet--they will--it's a given

Fraud is so rampant on Facebook that Paypal will not cover anything bought there. My son lost a hundred dollars on guitar. I paid with Paypal, and much to my surprise found out there is no cverage. I will never buy another item from any Facebook ad.

This is but one reason we've avoided Facebook and other similar social media sites entirely.

The idea when they first started was to "keep in touch" with your circle of friends and family, but I realized nobody cared what I had for breakfast.

Not one day goes by that I smile at my decision when I hear/read about these issues plaguing these sites.  IMO,  part of the hectic nature of life is just aggravated by being chained to something like Facebook all the time.

Yes, DO file a small claims court case, and here is why:
1. Once the case is heard and the company fails to show up, rather than ask for a judgement right then, ask the judge to allow you to read your complete case to the judge. Then as they never showed up, you will get a judgement based on the facts of your claim, not because the other side didn't show up.
2. Once the claim has been heard and judgement rendered, the facts are in the public domain, and you can publicize everything as fact.
3. Chances are slim you can get money back, but the amount you claim [and can show is accurate] can be taken as a tax loss.

If the venue won't provide their contact address, check your shipping label and receipt. If neither are accurate, you've got a scammer, so DO sue the hell outa them, and make sure everyone knows. You can often get a contact/mailing address thru the ''well of google knowledge''.

All companies being sued are required to either have the business owner, or a attorney representing the company, show up in court. That gets expensive quickly, even if they are local. Most companies who value their image will want to settle. Sometimes this is what it takes to get their attention. You can always drop the suit once they have satisfied your requirements.

30+ years ago I sued a major airline for $5k in small claims court. Cost me $25. They didn't show. Once I received the judgement paperwork, I arranged for the local Sheriff to show up with me at the airline's office at DC's National Airport. I said either pay me the $5k, or we seize stuff to sell at auction, computer systems first. The manager called HQ, then wrote me a check for $5k. I called the bank and confirmed the money was there, and let the bank know I was coming in with check No. XXX. They cashed it right away. The airline? No longer in business.

With the advent of Artificial Intelligence, customer service will take on a whole new meaning. And it won't be good.

Yes, unfortunately being stupid isn’t illegal.  There will never be laws prohibiting ‘stupid’.  Look who’s making them.
