eBay Has a Double Standard When It Comes to Refunds

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I sold something on eBay - the buyer misread the description and thought they were buying the whole lot instead of just one so asked for a refund which I gave, but I didn't realise I wouldn't get all the fees refunded by eBay as they keep 30p.

So I am out of pocket through no fault of mine. How can this be fair??

Just be grateful it isn't still paypal. They never refunded any fees at all.
eBay don't keep the 30p, Ayden do.

If one wishes to try and sell via doing business with eBay, one has to abandon ‘fair’ and embrace hypocrisy.

eBay says "cost of doing business" aka "take one for the team" aka "shut up and go away".

eBay "doesnt care" whos fault it is. 1) buyers are always right, 2) sellers are %99.9 wrong, 3) eBay "pays" Adyen to run the cc the first time - so regardless of right vs wrong ... SOMEONE is going to pay for that cost.... and if you guessed its the SELLER - then you win the prize ...

Its a PREMIER benefit of doing business with the "we are just a venue" crowd aka the San Jose Mafia.

If your buyer was confused it was YOUR fault.

eBay didn't write the listing YOU did.

A guy has 10 wrenches for sale, the smart thing to do is take a picture of 1 and say 10 are available. Taking a picture of all 10 can cause confusion. I learned this back in 1999 on eBay the same way you did. Sell what's in the picture unless stated otherwise!

I mean, was it even worth your time to write this over 30 cents?

Don't know about you.....but my time is way more valuable than that.

“ was it even worth your time to write this over 30 cents?”

Good of you to spend some of your …. valuable time … to compose and share that judgemental question.  Especially since there’s no tangible compensation involved.  Kinda makes one wonder if Ayden’s ‘collecting’ it is worth it also, no?  Especially if it only happens the one time.

Unless of course it happens more often; like every time, for every sale, consummated and aborted. So, 10 sales is $3.  100 - $30.  And so on.  Ever see the movie Superman III?  Fractions of a penny…so small nobody should bother to take notice.  Not worth their ‘time’.

So then.  At what point IS (or thus, ‘should’) such skimming of unearned ‘fees’ be deemed worthy of notice?

Of course, one might contend such insignificance WAS earned since processing occurred?  Funny how that ‘cost’ is the same no matter how much total payment is the basis.  Then again, one might reasonably wonder…if this ‘pittance below worthy of notice’ covers the transaction costs, what are the OTHER fees for?  And why do THEY ‘vary’ by total payment basis?  And If those fees cover costs, why not waive or refund the $0.30 if those other fees are not ‘refunded’?

Maybe it’s just a ‘relative’ question.  Consider how one U.S. senator voiced it when debating out of control spending based on the absurdly imbalanced clause presented to justify ‘minor’ increments of affordability: ‘only a $1B’, about a generation ago.

You had (6) boxes of Bowman cards, you have 4 left.

Take a picture of the (4) boxes and say in your listing it is for (1) box. Let me know if you run into any problems. rotflmao

If a company provides a service as collecting money they deserve a fee even if that money is refunded.

I have no problem with Adyen/eBay keeping the .30 cents.

But maybe the buyer should pay this fee instead of the seller!

In fact let's change this whole system around, why not have the buyer pay the fees for both Adyen and eBay. . . .

Paypal ALWAYS refunded the fees just not the .30 cents, at least for me they did. . . .

Pace, you know as well as I do that the majority of buyers never look at the description, they look at the photo(s) and make their decisions on whether or not to buy based on what they see. Heck, I've been guilty of doing just that and not receiving what I thought I was buying. I never expect a buyer to go by anything other than the photos I include (even though I write lengthy descriptions).

By your logic - any listing that shows 4 pictures in a listing (for example) - means that its 4 items and NOT 1 item ???? (aka different views) LMFAO

When the title says ONE its ONE. When your listing says "IN THE BOX: ONE" then its ............. ONE

When your Leatherman says "10 tools" but its 9 because you can use the can opener 2 different ways - is it "not as described" ????? No its 10 tools!

Whats apparent to SELLERS is that BUYERS will try to rip you off - aka you must ALWAYS play defense not offense - or you will loose.

There is NO common sense on eBay - there never has been since around 2000 - thats when eBay decided that BUYERS are always right - even when they are wrong.

Yes Sparrow - buyers look only at pictures and if your car or house was in the background - they would try and get IT free too!

Its also the way that eBay created the listing page - most times you barely even see the description!

Even when others tell you that they have thought the same about whats in the picture is for sale, you come to your own defense! ROTFLMAO

Pace, sorry to say eBay does NOT revolve around YOU!

Again I ask, why don't you have a picture of the (4) boxes of cards and say you're only selling 1? The reason is you know it's asking for trouble. . .

I
see (4) in the picture, they are $10.99 for each.

He has (4) available, does he have (4) sets of (4) or just (4)

Even his description is vague. . . . .

The OP's listing might have even been more vague!

Has anybody ever clicked the $4 BOLD TITLE box just under the title as you list an item, on purpose? I wonder then why it's still there after all these years?

This 30 cent fee is NOTHING new.  We paid it in PayPal too.  And if we refunded a sale in PP, they did not return the 30 cent fee [now 49 cents] EVER.  Just for some reason more sellers notice it in MP.  But they have been paying it for YEARS.

I have learnt over a long period selling on eBay that refunds are dealt with by the ''system'', the ''code'' the ''algo'' if you like, its only when we call up to query the decision, we get to talk to a tier one C/S with (I must add) very basic level of knowledge of how the platform operates, and how ''code'' decisions can be mitigated, and in most cases, they are frightened to death of making a decision on the phone, then having to justify it later to section manager, why do you think feedback emails attribute your opinion to one specific ''named'' C/S person. I have recently reported two very ''FRESH'' scams that are spreading wild at the moment, which are costing eBay (NOT SELLERS) huge sums, I explained in details how the scams are pulled., and yet eBay refused to budge, and proceeded to pay the scamming buyers! I even tried to report it to UK head of eBay, and still waiting for an acknowledgement! make of that what you will

So eBay processed a payment for you, then processed a refund back to the buyer and kept a whole 30 cents that actually went to the credit card company?  So they actually kept nothing for themselves?  Such thievery!  They'll never make it as a crook.

If PayPal had refunded this, under their new policy, they would not refund you the roughly 3% processing fee at all, and would have charged you 49 cents for the transaction fee instead of 30 cents.  People don't even know when they are better off.

In the world of eBay where there are nuclear missiles coming at you from all directions, this isn't even a blip on the radar screen.  Like gnats.

There is nothing like eBay out there. eBay can raise fees more and create little caveats to make more money then fine. They will never drive all sellers or buyers away. I have signed up for lots of other competitors and eBay is still supreme for what they offer. The privilege of buying and or selling using the eBay platform is a huge benefit to all those that use it.

They should raise the discounts on FedEx or UPS and or USPS by a half a dollar and you'll still not be able to beat the discount they give us.

They are making money like PayPal did for years. Good for them.

Listing on eBay is like a dating website. All looking good. hair done to perfection great fancy outfit on. Buffed and polished and in excellent condition. Meet (or Buy) me. same difference. The invitee is waiting at a table for two and isn't looking around as a chubby guy or female walks in with messy hair. The person waiting thinks OMG is that him? I'm not even looking again. The guy or female looks around then leaves.

listing things trying not to be tricky you will lose more than you gain. A negative is a killer.

On Ebay I sell a smaller lcd monitor. Some sellers show a picture of a newer unit. Mine is actual. They have sold 1,000+ I have sold 50+. Why because of the listing much like a dating website they are hoping.
Thank you
