eBay Changes Shipping Label Default to More Expensive Option

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
One thing that's been going on for a few days is what is pre-selected as shipping when I print labels.

I have a bunch of free-shipping items with 1st Class Package as the shipping method. When I go to print a label, it always defaulted to 1st Class Package. NOT ANYMORE. Now it defaults to either Priority or Express (which are way more expensive).

The 1st Class option actually says "Buyer Selected" but isn't what eBay selects as a default. It would be real easy for sellers not to notice that if they have printed a lot before and it changes...all you have to do is click purchase and bam, it's paid for and there's your label. Then you'd have to request a refund for it and re-do the label printing - if you noticed.

Found another thing that's REALLY BAD in my opinion. I have a listing with calculated shipping and 2 options set up (Priority and Ground). BUT, the buyer only sees the Ground shipping and can't select Priority. It's just not there. I "removed" the priority and re-added as a second option, but it didn't fix it. Looks like eBay is ONLY showing the first option you select for shipping so if you have some with multiple options, go check them.
C.

PS: Disregard that one point about buyer not being able to change the shipping or select a different one. It's there after they buy and enter their information. It's not very intuitive, but it is there.

Gee we don't have those problems as we use a shipping service that doesn't try to steal from their customers all the time. Not giving slimebay anymore money than absolutely necessary and shipping from somewhere else helps. You put all your eggs in the holely greedbay basket you will end up with scrambled eggs on your face.

I sold an item this morning with 1st class package as the shipping.

Went to print a label and all is as it should be, it offered and printed a 1st class package label. It didn't try to push me into a Priority package option. . . .

I've seen this a few times and have caught it on my own.

Its a waste of time - but with every eBay sale - I check to see what *I* listed as the shipping method (since its free shipping - so it is what it is) and I check eBays shipping prices against pirateship - and wouldnt you know it - pirateship is always better - sometimes by $3-4 !

eBay (and Ive said this 10000000x) is the San Jose Mafia. If theres a possible way to screw a seller - they will. Ghost relists, shipping issues, listing issues, placemwent issues, VERO issues - EVERY issue (never mind payment issues) are all fair game for the worlds biggest swindlers.

eBay SHOULD be prosecuted under RICO laws, but politicians are too busy pulling down 100 yr old statues and issuing COVID-19 rules.

NEVER EVER EVER "TRUST" eBay, never mind they dont have your back - they actually push you over when you are in a wheel chair.

My daughter got this just this morning.

Dumped into some funky new label printing page which also shows the dimensions in reverse and defaulted to PM instead of the buyer selected (and seller listed as ONLY option) FCP.

Then to top it off there's nowhere on this pathetic page to select to print the Inline Label Record which shows the item shipped from and to whom AND most importantly the tracking # and price & weight.

It's so bleeding obvious that their idiot coders (and the idiots who approve new coding) have never actually used the damn site.

Thinking of moving all shipping to PirateShip. I have no patience for this kind of nonsesnse.  It is one scheme after another and they ALWAYS screw the seller.  The business ethics of a run out of town carnival.

This is a very annoying problem to be sure.  A few months ago it was doing this for me.  I reported it, it took a few weeks but they fixed it and things returned to normal.  Now the same issue is back again for me.  I reported it again.

I have gotten a bit to click happy and purchased the higher shipping, not often, but I have done it when I wasn't paying close enough attention.  I voided the label and then printed the appropriate one.

Hopefully they will get this fixed very soon.

@Marie,

I wonder what happens when you accidentally click the higher price one and void it out to get a refund eventually. Does eBay still take their % fee off that higher one and then again when you purchase another label?

I have had it on every label I have tried to print for the last 5 days. And how, here is a kicker, they have started adding UPS option on mine. I never ship UPS and now UPS started showing up as the preferred payment option.

Glitch? Hmmm...wouldn't someone have to have programmed it to display this way?

Yes this has been happening for me since at least mid March of this year. A few times I have been in a hurry and mistakenly generated Express labels for First Class items. Of course I void the label, and then wait for weeks for my refund... I asked about this in a discussion group with some other eBay sellers and the consensus was that eBay had changed the default because they knew shipping delays were happening due to the pandemic and they hoped that sellers would foot the upcharges for faster shipping. Yeah right.

Ebay has NEVER charged the FVF on shipping for the amount the seller pays for shipping, it has ALWAYS been charged on the amount that the BUYER PAYS for shipping.  That rule has never changed from the beginning.

So the only credit necessary due to this issue is the voiding of the shipping label and its associated cost.

I get an alert banner on my shipping page each time I print a label:

"USPS is experiencing significant delays across their delivery network. Please consider using other carrier options that my provide a better carrier experience."

I don't know if these "significant carrier delays" have anything to do with the label switches but we do have an election coming up and this could be a prognostication of what is to come.

Yes Ebay has been doing that for awhile now.  It is do to sorting facilities getting shut down [2 in my state alone], sorting machines being decommissioned and all kinds of things going on within USPS.  I have experiences significant delays getting things processed out of the regional facility.  Ridiculous amounts of time.

Well, it looks like the shipping page is back to normal today, with the default back on the buyer selected service. Overheard from the San Jose eBay tower, "We could have got away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids!"

Marie, of course this was a money making plan from eBay. They pay pennies on the dollar for shipping labels. They make much more on the shipping than the FVF, thus their push for returns, best to make double on the shipping! When they push very expensive options, they make even more money when sellers pick them.

I don't and haven't ever liked this issue on shipping labels.  Which is why I reported the issues and followed up on that complaint the best I could the first time this issue appeared.  It did get fixed within a couple weeks.  Unfortunately now it is back.  So again I've reported it and I know lots of sellers have reported it as well.

Nothing excuses this issue.  It shouldn't have resurfaced.  As sellers we have to pay attention to what we are doing and always stay on our toes.  Sad but true.  We know the problem is there and additional expenses to sellers can be avoided easily while we wait for Ebay to fix the issue again.

It does appear they have updated the screen.  Today I do not see the Buyer's Choice or whatever it was called.  It lists the shipping options from highest to lowest and the first option is pre-checked.  So they have updated it.  We still have to be careful and select the appropriate shipping method.

You believe this is an ongoing glitch. I know it is not, it is a deliberate attempt to defraud sellers, which has been SOP since the Hoe's tenure.

That isn't exactly what I said.  The part about it saying Buyer's Choice was and seems not to be removed.

The screen is likely as it was designed to be now.  Listing various shipping methods available on the shipment with it defaulting to the most expensive.

Do I like it, NO!  Will I take responsibility for making sure the right box is checked for the type of shipment I want to create, Yes!
