eBay Unyielding on Tracking for Combined Orders

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
I had a customer order three inexpensive rings from my store which offered free shipping. She used three different accounts. The rings were very light in weight and all went to the same address so I put them in one package and was able to ship them for three dollars.

I went to add the tracking number and eBay would not allow me to add the same tracking number to all three rings. I called them and was advised that since she used three different accounts, I had to mail the packages in three separate envelopes.

So for these inexpensive rings, eBay wanted me to spend nine dollars instead of three.

I spoke to a representative and then to a supervisor and was given absolutely no help, not even to note on my dashboard or account indicating all three rings were sent, so now I will wind up with negative tracking on my account.

@Tool, that may be true for entering the tracking at the point of sale, but in an opened case. Remember, you are not required to upload tracking at the point of sale. You can just wait until a case is opened and enter it there. It is easy to prove, to eBay's satisfaction, that a package showing delivered to the zip code on the sales details is, in fact, delivered.

The case system cannot tell how many times a tracking number has been used.

@pace306

I just refunded a INR that wasn't true. The item was just as pictured, she changed her mind and knew I would have to pay for shipping both ways.

She never even opened the packages.

I lost $3.25 in shipping both ways.

She's a BAD seller! The kind eBay needs to give the boot to.

I could have a friend buy something and pull the same crap on her but that's not my style.

With as few returns I get I'll just eat it. . . Caulk it up to doing business. . .

You said: "Tool says lots of things ...... "you believe any of it"?" Why wouldn't they?

I have twice the eBay feedback you do and sell more then you do!

The proof is right there on eBay!

Tool - please dont try and bait me - you know Ina and David dont like it when you rile people up.

Im not sure what you have "more of" - I dont live off eBay - and you do (by your own admittion) so even if you do have "more" that would be the reason.

"Because they aren't... if the seller doesn't have time to pack 3 items they shouldn't be listing them. If the seller doesn't have the packing material for their 3 separate listings then again-shouldn't be listing them. "

You are correct - its always the sellers fault......

"No it's not up to the sellers discretion-and the seller is the one whose account could get shut down for too many bad marks so they should have been more mindful. That two lots of shipping saved could mean financial ruin if things go badly for them."

You are correct that eBay forces sellers into doing things their way - the point wasnt that you are wrong - its that eBay shouldnt stick its nose into it. Because eBay "mandates it" therefore if you dont do it - you will get an INR (for no good real reason (as compared to real life).

"I was referring to the "other" undeserved tirade on @Elliot " There was no tirade on Elliot. If you sell lots of jewelry - you can get inexpensive scales that measure to the gram and they are $10-$15 - so adding items to a package and noting weight change can easily be done - but still I understand what he was saying.

Don't forget that eBay has a vested interest (FVF on shipping, anybody?) in keeping transactions like these separate, over and above the difficulty that might arise from a technical/software standpoint.  Not to mention that we've all seen eBay's tech bankruptcy on display over and over again.

Similarly, since I sell through multiple seller accounts, I frequently have one person buy items from different of MY accounts at the same time (not THE BUYER'S accounts, which is what the OP is discussing).  And have been asked to combine.

I always take the tack that I would if I could, but eBay prevents me from combining.  Anything from one account is entirely separate from any other account in eBay's eyes and software.  My first instinct is that I'm happy to throw eBay under the bus and commiserate with MY buyer (NOT eBay's customer, thank you!).  "Gee, I really wish I could, but have to follow the [stupid/senseless/ludicrous - enter your own adjective here] rules eBay establishes, even if they are counterintuitive".

And then they get 2 - 3  - 4 whatever, separate packages.

The fact that the OP did the combining was short-sighted on their part.  To me, it sounds like the OP didn't do their due diligence on what could/should be done BEFORE doing what they did, in what also sounds like a totally unfamiliar situation to them.   I also don't recall OP saying that the customer asked to combine, or asked for a refund on shipping if items could be combined.

Above I made a mistake.

I said: INR when I meant not as described

This is the actual stated reason:

Reason
Doesn't match description or photos
Details
I want to return for a refund

@dan's parts

I had a guy last week buy an item from 2 of our accounts.

He asked to combine shipping.

I looked at both of the accounts and the 1 that has 100% "Tracking uploaded on time and validated" didn't get the tracking number. . . .Just marked it as shipped.

They were most likely purchases made with a guest account by a new buyer who doesn't know how to combine orders, so each purchase garners a new "ID"

As far as ebay is concerned they were 3 separate purchase from 3 separate accounts and need to be shipped that way.

There are MANY reasons a buyer will use more than one account to buy off eBay. I just did it the other day - ! I have two accounts and wanted to use my Bucks on both!

Unfortunately no, not any more. eBay now requires that the tracking number be uploaded before any INR dispute is filed. They have said that they will not honor tracking numbers uploaded after an INR is filed, possibly to prevent sellers from playing catch-up and sending some trinket to the buyer to get a Delivered scan and get the dispute closed out in their favor.

I have had this situation happen a few times - in fact last week same person, same address and 3 different User IDs and all 0 feedback. I shipped all 3 items out individually each with a tracking number. In my case it wasn't free shipping so the buyer paid $5.54 shipping for each. As other people have said, eBay system goes by User IDs and as far as the system is concerned it is 3 different buyers - it could be 3 different buyers living in the same household.  It could be scammer hoping some nice seller will send them all in one envelope also. A Ebay rep a couple years back explained, and I totally agree with her, that this affords seller protection. Let's say I mailed those 3 items out to the buyer and only able to enter one tracking number then the other two have no proof of mailing or delivery. The buyer can easily file that they did not receive the other two items and refunds are processed and I'm out the money while the buyer has all the items. I can't prove I mailed all 3 items with only a tracking number for 1 item. Now if a buyer with the same ID purchases 3 different items and pays 3 times I do combine shipping and ship out in one package and refund excess shipping.

The Ebay policy on this is a good one.  The OP's buyer paid with different accounts, so they need to be shipped separately.  The OP had the cost of shipping built into the pricing, so while certainly they can make more profit if they ship them together since they all went to the same address, it causes issues doing that inside of Ebay and PP alike.

This isn't a shortcoming of the Ebay site.  The OP had three DIFFERENT buying accounts purchase items.  You are not suppose to do combined shipping on multiple Buyer's accounts.  That can lead to all kinds of issues like tracking, return requests, INRs, etc.

The OP should have shipped them all separately.

I had this happen on two orders. I shipped them in the same package. Gave my buyer a shipping refund and took the hit on tracking. (Yes I called Ebay, and was told there was no way to show tracking for the second item.) I did everything right for the buyer. That is what is important. When I buy things I expect to be treated the same way, and for the most part over the years that is the way Ebay works for me.

But the OP had free shipping on the items they sold.  So a refund to the buyer wasn't in play on the shipping.  The OP was paid for shipping each purchase separately.  They just wanted to save a little money and ship them together.  I get that as I would do the same, but not on something I sold to three different buyers.

I too like to do what is best for my customers, but not at the expense of the health of my selling account.  That is not a good business decision IMHO.

If a customer buys a item using a temporary ID and buys a item using their normal ID you cannot combine the items into one package for shipping purposes because ebay refuses to allow you to re-use the tracking number on two different IDs.

Been there and tried to do that one.

Ebay wants to run your business down to how many items you put in a box. This communist way of thinking is why I left ebay for good two years ago after working on ebay for 20 years. I never looked back and found other venues to make money. Ebay is and has been a sinking and struggling ship for years. Get out while you can before ebay takes everything from you.

3 different buyer accounts? I would never have allowed this as combined. Seems really shady to me

I would have shipped as three different orders. If that's what the buyer(s) want, that's what they get - I don't do their thinking for them.

It's pretty obvious why tracking can't be uploaded to various accounts - TRACKING IS INDEXED TO ORDER - if it wasn't, then one could put any old tracking number on any old order.

And insofar as 'scams' - the seller just opened themselves up to one - they may have saved themselves shipping costs, but on two accounts the buyer/s could claim INR on two of the rings.

Hopefully it'll all work out well for the seller (it usually does) but I can't believe they did this.

Also one last thing - the title of this piece is misleading - it's not combined orders or items, it's COMBINED ACCOUNTS - a far different thing. Each account is a discrete entity.
