Is Managed Payments Causing eBay Checkout Problems?

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
I have been selling on eBay for 18 years - fulltime for the last 6 years. Basically had growth month-over-month till 2 years ago when they fully integrated the Structured Data search algorithms that have proven to be so terrible for buyers and sellers alike!

Still was holding our own until we were forced into Managed Payments on Oct. 26. Before that date we would consistently have a sale or 5 every day of the week. For years we would go months without a "no sale" day.

Since Oct 26, we have had 6 within two weeks. And sales on the good days have been sluggish and far between.

A merchant support CS told me today that they have had a known issue with the checkout and that people have not been able to complete purchases and that they are working quickly to fix it! It's been 2 weeks already.

They offer no compensation for the $300 Store fees (or $1500 FVF) that I pay for a functional store. eBay, through negligence, is actually preventing sales! And charging me for a store that people cannot checkout in. Getting to wits end with this company.

Only 340,000 of eBay 7 million active sellers have been forced into MP as of last quarterly report, and they still cannot process $ at that level. At what point does eBay become responsible to its customers (sellers)?
Chris

As a frequent buyer, I can certainly confirm that there are huge problems when checking out with sellers on Managed Payments.

Multiple item purchases and invoices appear the have the most issues when it comes to Managed Payments.

Whenever possible (i.e., even if it happens to cost a bit more), I elect to purchase from sellers who are still with PayPal.

Buyers need to be smarter when shopping - almost NO ONE sells entirely on ebay anymore. You simply can not earn a living there anymore. So if I find something that I want I copy and paste the item title and google it - odds are it's being sold somewhere else that is accessible and probably cheaper.

This letter speaks to something that I have suspected. My click through rate has remained constant, while the sell through rate has dropped by 35% over the last two weeks. Some days with sales at or above average, followed days of just one or two sales for under $25.00. I didn't make $100 all weekend. Been averaging $250-$300 per day. Sales seem to be back today. Pretty much same experience as the OP. When I look at competitors' sales, I see their numbers are holding up. Leads me to believe there is a problem in Managed Payments causing buyers to go elsewhere. I believe sellers in Managed Payments have been at a disadvantage all along for a number of reasons.

Managed Payments stinks.

There appears to have been an intermittent, periodic (yet often significant) uptick of buyer checkout/payment complaints problems since summer of last year.

One of the significant limitations of eBay's platform for sellers is that unless the buyer directly contacts the seller and informs them of a problem, the seller has no visibility whatsoever to cart abandonment and/or checkout issues (as they would on Shopify or their own site).

OP and others have reported merchant support/CS have informed them of these ''known issues'', yet unsurprisingly eBay's not acknowledging any problems (and eBay's ''System Status'' page seldom gets updated unless there's a raucous outcry and direct calling-out of that fact).

That is interesting. It fits a pattern that I have noticed since being pushed into Managed Payments on August 4th of this year.

I suppose from eBay's perspective, it isn't a problem. Buyer can't complete checkout from Seller A, enrolled in MP, so buyer goes to Seller B, who is still collecting through Paypal. This was mentioned in another comment on this article.

From eBay's perspective, there isn't a problem. So long as the transaction occurs on eBay, which seller is not important. Ebay gets a fee. This plays into their business practice of doling sales out among several sellers based on select criteria at that moment. Probably a scoring model that surfaces results based on a list of conditions thereby ranking sellers in the moment per a given search.

You're selling too much, your score is knocked down a bit; selling too little, your score gets goosed. An oversimplification, but you get the idea. All of it designed to maintain a breadth of sellers and inventory that gives the perception that eBay's seller base and merchandise is more broad and healthier than is really the case.

eBay is a pixel rental service...nothing else.
By all accounts, they're not all that good at it.
Why would they assume to be experts in some other activity in which they have zero ability, experience, and accountability?

For my store that is in MP, since June 2019, sales are a little higher than last year.  But this discussion causes one to wonder how much has been lost due to checkout problems.

It's not just managed payments, I have a buyer who cannot pay thru PayPal and I am not on managed payments.

@BobNJ

That is what the threads on Ebay show too.  A variety of problems for buyers with sellers in MP and sellers not in MP.  IDK where the source of the problem is but it sure is a big problem to be sure.

So .aside from the clunky glitchy site . and the 416 adverts on every listing , the lying about delivery estimates , and ebay telling buyers "its the nasty sellers telling you porkies " AND the fact they cant process a simple payment properly they have had running for a year now - everything is peachy..........
No wonder Ive had six blank days THIS month already .
its like buying a pizza ,having it delivered , then finding someone had a piece out of the box before it even got to you

I'm experiencing the same drought in sales for the last 2 weeks as well.  8 zero days and a couple small sales and one normal day.  Can't they ever get anything right.

Same as others, I was doing really well with multiple sales a day - got put on managed payments the last week of August and sales have tanked - even being in 4th quarter, sales are awful!
