What Protections Should eBay Extend to Sellers?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Hi Everyone,
I would like to get a better understanding of what Seller Protection features you'd like eBay to adopt. I'm not asking this to start just a string of eBay bashing posts. But to get some specifics and realistic ideas of what you may like to see.

The new Seller Protections offer to TRS members as of October are a good start, but more needs to happen. I would just like to discuss what that more might look like.

I would like to start a real discussion on this with specifics and realistic views. I don't know if it will help, but there is no harm in having a productive discussion on the subject and we might just gain a better understanding of each other.
Thank you,
Marie

Unless you are hooked up with DW - and even then - is a discussion even warranted? Ebay has had the option for years to review sellers opinions on the boards, weekly chats and social media. Sellers input has mattered little for the past 15 years. The only reason Ebay is making some concessions ( and we don't know yet how that will pan out and if it's a farce ) is because sellers are leaving - and that's a fact. Because you can't close down accts for at least 6 months - and by then most people have moved on and forgotten about it - they add to the imaginary seller numbers. Of my 5 accts - only one now is active.

One would think that after 20 years Greedbay might be smart enough to have answered that question. We can toss the question around for the next 20 years and if Greedbay is still in business nothing will have changed. You just don't get it. Greedbay thinks of sellers as NOISE AND IGNORES THEM.

Seller protection should be the same for all sellers. Not a pay for protection system that is in place at the moment,.

It is understood and quite alright to have different listing costs based on volume and similar considerations. It is not alright to have a one seller is more equal than another seller system when attacked by a malicious buyer.

But, then again, many call eBay the San Jose Mafia with reason.

How about adopting a policy that all buyers are not angels and all sellers are not the devil incarnate? How about a policy that a 20-year seller with a stellar record is not automatically assumed to be scum when a zero feedback buyer claims SNAD? How about enforcing their own policies which have been "on the books" for years about bad buyers?

We know it's a fact that eBay minions read this blog and all the comments, as well as their own forums, eBay has known for years what the issues are that sellers face with liar buyers, but they choose to do nothing to tighten enforcement because it would cost them money to ban those buyers. Remember how they acknowledged the problem with a "brick in a box" return? Did anything change?

I think it's a good question Marie. There are so many more problems with eBay than just seller protections. It is only one small factor in a business that is rife with so many critical issues.

Also, if Mr. Wenig and his boys can't figure it out, it isn't going to make a whit of difference what we want. They don't listen, they haven't listened and they are certainly not going to in the future.

Get rid of the top brass....every last one. That might help.

I don't see why any of that should prevent us from having a discussion on the subject.

@canbrit
I agree, there are many issues on Ebay, but I really don't see the harm in us discussing this specific subject.

******************************
As I stated above, I was hoping we could have a discussion about specifics regarding Seller Protections.  You guys are usually reluctant about sharing your view points or ideas regarding Ebay.  So why is this different?  Why can't we discuss specifics?

It would take you no more time to post your specific ideas on how to improve the system than it does for you to just generally discuss Ebay.

Because it's like discussing what curtains to put up in a burning house. Best analogy I can come up with today. Sorry.

Well Marie, the greatest seller protection would be ebay cracking down on the scamming buyers.

Also, allow sellers to leave negative feedback to warn others. Perhaps install a double-blind feedback system.
Bring back some balance.

But we all know it won't happen, just more ebay lip service BS (they would lose too much revenue)

@P.Dorf

That is a very good point.  Buyers have been in an environment for a long time on Ebay where taking advantage of sellers has been allowed and what seems like encouraged for a long time.

And you are right also on the ability for sellers to leave negative FB.  That will never come back to Ebay.  That however is NOT because Ebay would be the only ones losing money, so would the sellers.  We would all be in that boat together.

It just isn't good business to publicly call out buyer for their bad behavior.  And sometimes sellers would do that when it just isn't deserved either.  So even the good buyers would start getting fearful of getting a neg which would just cause them to go elsewhere.

I think Ebay should just do way with buyer FB all together.  Like other similar sites have done.  It serves no purpose whatsoever and should just go away completely IMHO.

So why have a discussion about a subject that isn't going to change - unless you are DW and will make the changes. As canbrit said - it's like deciding what curtains to put up in a burning house - our opinions, discussions ect will not make a difference and only infuriate sellers more just by talking about it because we know they just don't care.

If Ebay management did care - your question would be valid but they don't and so you are only adding fuel to a fire which upsets you when we react negatively to Ebay.

Then why discuss anything on any subject here or elsewhere if you don't have access to the people that can actually change things????

Are you saying we shouldn't discuss anything that we don't have the power to get changed??  Are you really suggesting that?

So the purpose of this site is what exactly?

It is fine if you don't want to be part of the discussion.

I would think that this site having been here for more than 10 years has discussed this more than once. In fact we are still beating a dead horse. Greedbay doesn't care to change anything that will affect their bottom line. So I guess we will keep beating that horse.

In my many years of both selling and buying on eBay, I have had some truly horrific things done to me by eBay, their goons and their cheerleaders, which I will not go into. If it was just the occasional incident, I could brush it off but it wasn't and isn't

There is always some onslaught or insult because the people managing this company don't know how to do anything else but abuse what they have.

You say you know sometimes things can get heated on the community forums. How about being forced off permanently when all you've been doing is trying to help your fellow sellers. Just because a few hags who had Alan's ear decided they didn't like me being nice.

I'm sure you remember Castle. She did a lot of good work on those boards for decades. Not until she ticked off Alan and off she goes. Then again, she also hated me until her eyes opened. IMHO, it is the worst business of any kind I have ever come across in my life, and I'm no spring chicken anymore.

A business that can garner so much hatred from so many people in the past many years should NOT exist.

OK folks I get it.  It is better to vent and complain than have a constructive conversation on a specific subject.  Carry on.

For those of you who didn't know Castlemagicmemories, she was on the boards since 2007, had 27,100 helpful's (thumbs up) from sellers and made 30,800 posts. THEN she started challenging Alan. Another rat employee who should be gone. He made sure she was gone before he came back from the Vegas fiasco.

She was considered a Superstar, number 1 on the boards. Now it's filled with cheerleaders. There is no help for anyone there. I don't recommend going.

No it wasn't.  What I was trying to accomplish is outlined in my letter above.  Specifics on Seller protection.  That is not what you posted.

Look it is no problem.  I tried and failed.  This isn't something that anyone wants to do here, so that is fine.  It isn't a big deal.  I can move on easy enough.

Sensible discussion without bashing someone, or eBay happening on here is as likely as eBay becoming a well run, honest and competent marketplace.
