Seller Finds Etsy Marketing Tools Bring Traffic but Not Sales

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
This may be old news to some, but I just recently figured it out. I started selling vintage items on Etsy about 5 months ago. A couple of months ago, I took the bait and started paying for the new combination Google/Etsy ads. I was thrilled when I began having more traffic with several Favorites every day. But I still only had a few sales.

Besides the ads, I had also set up my Shop to send prospective buyers who favorite something a promotional email 48 hours later with a 15% discount on their favorited item. Periodically, I'd check to see how many of these promo emails had been sent out and there were very few. I couldn't figure it out.

Then, a few days ago when someone favorited something of mine, I happened to notice they had over 300,000 (yes, 6 figures!) favorites! Then it all started to click. Most of these folks who favorite something were simply adding to their own "collections" to show off with no intention of buying, at my expense of course if they had clicked on an ad that brought them into my listing.

I guess these people have disabled promo notifications so they are not "bothered" with discounts that a real buyer would be interested in getting.

I suppose if one followed a person like this, they could potentially buy something that they saw in someone's collection. But that does not work on my Android phone. When I try to click on someone else's favorite item, it simply takes me back to my own Shop. This does work however, when I do it on my laptop but most people nowadays are using their devices to shop.

My question is this: Is paying Etsy a certain amount every day for clicks really worth it? It seems to just be draining my account. Or am I just funding someone's collection of things they never intend to buy?

BTW, I also took the bait on free shipping on items $35 and over to supposedly be placed higher in the search. Is there really anything that works? Running sales? I've heard a lot of No's on that one.

If ads are worthless, sellers need to know they are wasting their money. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks for all your great articles.
F.

I have been selling handmade and vintage items on Etsy for about 8 years and the sad truth is that NOTHING works.

And I have tried and continue to try EVERYTHING including free shipping, promoted listings, the new make believe "advertising", coupons, sales you name it,

Although it used to be much easier to make sales when I first began, Etsy has completely changed into something that is unrecognizable from the way it started.

The only way you can get found today is by dumb luck- if it happens to be your turn for the robots to pick your shop.  I wish I could tell you something different, but that's the sad truth.

So Etsy has the tools to bring traffic to you BUT they can't make the those people click on the buy button.

Curiosity seekers drain the money.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

AND : The Stats and Dashboard will combine easier when Etsy Removes the irrelevant "visits" metric.
Views are what matters.
I've correctly predicted  the next item to be ordered ( 3 times in 1 week ! ) thanks to the New "Views" metric.

The Etsy Ads (google ) don't work at all for me.  I disabled them when for the first time I lost money on Etsy.  The free shipping started killing my shop and the Etsy Ads killed it off.

The ads are a huge waste of money. Turned it all off and actually started selling more. I added lots of keywords, starting favoriting things in other shops, and undercut my competitor's prices. Also trying to constantly add new stuff

I would never pay for pay-per-click ads. There are too many looky-loos to needlessly run up your marketing bill. It's also a perfect weapon for a competitor to use against you. So, such ads are simply an invitation to spend your money for nothing in return but a higher advertising bill.

I’ve done the free shipping for months, as well as the ads. I have been losing you since exactly the time the new ads and demand for free shipping began. This is about unmitigated greed and it’s coming back to bite Silverman and Glaser in the a$$es.

Just envisioned Etsy with NO "Advertising" links on the site whatsoever.
Get rid off ALL the Money Drains and have just a Straight Site for people selling good things.
No favoring of listings over other listings,  EVER.
A Nice FLAT, even environment.
Search for things and FIND THEM.
Purge all the corporate EVIL in lieu of a Happy Site to be on  :o)

I jumped into Posh just because for awhile there they were advertising the heck out of the site. Horrible. I do not have the luxury of sitting around socializing. It sounds to me like the same thing at Etsy. I haven't sold on Etsy for awhile so I don't know what all their bait and switch tactics are anymore but it seems to me all these sites are doing the same thing. Ebay with promoted listings - isn't that the same thing too? Hate to turn this political but anyone who is buying into the current "economy is great" is an idiot. People are broke - plain and simple. Unemployment is low you say? Sure their all taking whatever they can find at meager wages. Corporate American is sucking the life out of the USA and we are complicit because we do not support our fellow Americans.  We keep sending our cash overseas. Just go watch Crazy Rich Americans - you will get it.  I'm actually doing a craft fair this weekend. Haven't done that in years - gotta do something - jsut too danged old to be a Walmart greeter at $8 and stand on my feet all day.

Etsy's promotions and marketing tools have been, for most of the past decade, useful for reaching out to a certain type of shopper with a certain type of product.  All others who pay for promotion with Etsy are flushing their money away.

I had the fascinating experience many years ago of having an item included in Treasury that was on Etsy's FP in the early afternoon/lunchtime during the week.  In about an hour, the item got almost 2000 views.  No favorites (for the item or the shop), and no sales.  Someone contacted me trying to by the prop I had used to display the item, which I could not sell them since it was not handmade, not vintage, and not a crafting supply.

Since my shop was moderately successful, it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that with all those views there might have been at least one heart, no?  So funny!

I realized that Etsy's marketing advice and tools may, or may not, be nearly worthless for your shop, depending on what you sell and the customer you are trying to reach.  All sellers need to keep in mind that Etsy is marketing itself, through the shops it hosts -- selling an image to appeal primarily to potential sellers (its customers).  More sellers = more $$$ for Etsy.

I tried Etsy's PLs for a few hours on the first day, years ago, they were available.  Turned them off after a few hours, and never used them again.

Since they changed their marketing approach, my sales have dropped 41% and I DO give free shipping.
BS, like everywhere else.

Looking to the question's basis for a minute...

Going into any 'ad deal' should be preceeded by either a pre-determined return on investment goal, or a high tolerance, yet finite limit, for the cost of experimentation in an environment designed to maximize accruing cost.

So the answer to the question depends on which category applies, and whether thresholds have been crossed.

Looks like they have.

I paid for PL for a few years.  Had pretty good success the first year or two.  Then the numbers started dropping and the beginning of this year was barely just ok.  So I stopped it.  Didn't notice a change in sales.

I recently felt I had no choice but to provide free shipping over $35.  Sales started dropping and I couldn't find any of my items on the first few pages in search. Since then sales have increased quite a bit.  Sales over $35 have almost doubled over last year.  I think it might actually be worth it.  Just really HATE that I  had to raise prices and that Etsy "forced" me into doing it by making my listings invisible.

Google/Etsy ads are money makers, but i will let you in on a little secret, the way etsy has set it up, it's just google and etsy who makes the money,

if you cannot control googles ad filters, which etsy is doing a fine job of controlling and hiding from you, you're simply throwing your money away and even worse most likely helping your competitors,

YOU NEED TO TERMINATE THESE AD'S IMMEDIATELY

I agree with all the above. The only one making any money is ETSY!
