Is There a Problem with eBay Search?

By: Reader

Sponsored Link

Dear Ina,
Amazing - first an apology and now a small change back to how things used to be. Here is the link to the newest "You spoke and we Listened".

Sales must really be hurting for them to keep making these concessions. I have spoken to others on FB in my category who say their sales have completely stopped.

On another site I sell on sales have spiked and I have had a couple of customers ask why my listings were no longer on eBay. When I told them they had been until a couple of days ago when they expired, they commented that they had not been able to find any of the items they were buying from me on this other site on eBay.

Search engine must really be screwed up.
D.

Tool,

When you are looking for unique items any person can usually find them. When you are looking for common everyday items that a ton of sellers have for sale you only see a few of what is available.
I was looking for 10x13 bubble mailers the other day. The regular eBay search showed me a bunch of stuff that was high priced and I did not see my regular seller listed I which I thought was strange so I went to their store and there they were at a much cheaper price.

Just more proof that eBay's search is broken and does not show a lot of the really good deals.

I agree with Bill.
I have a person that I buy my mower belts/ belts from and in the search he doesn't come up. I am lucky that I wrote his id on my manuals. His prices are within the "Best Match" searches.

@Bill & Dingdong

Why are you searching for a seller you already bought from?

Just look in your eBay under the pull down and select "purchase history"

You can pick several options like last 60 days, 2018, 2017 or 2016

I buy my bubble mailers from eBayshippingsupplies, no need to shop around when you have a $25 off coupon from eBay.

They aren't any cheaper anyplace on Earth!

I got (100) 8.5x10.75 bubble mailers for just $6.14

eBay search has never been broken! It works, it may not work how YOU want it to work but it does work.

@tool
There are thousands of posts on the eBay forum related to the messed up searches. This has been going on for quite a while.

Tool,

I have a coupon but I do not buy eBay supplies since I want plain tan mailers like everyone else uses. I do not want to bring notice that it came from eBay so the thieves will grab the package. I have been selling through mail order for over 40 years and the least conspicuous you are the better. I buy by the 100 and get 100 poly sleeves for a few dollars more on 9x12 size delivered.
Only a fool would send out merchandise of value in a mailer that advertises take me I'm valuable.

The problem is that when you want to search for something you are only shown a few of the items that are available for common goods and they are higher priced then a lot of the others so it turns buyers off from searching eBay for what they are looking for.

That is why Millennials hate eBay and hardly ever go there unless they are searching for uncommon items. The goons at eBay do not understand that and that is why:

Right now I need a 1/4 Hi Lok Roller Ratchet

If you can find one cheaper then eBay let me know!

Amazon doesn't even have them new or used. . .

I upgraded to a premium store and as soon as I did my sales stopped, WHY?  I cannot figure that one out.  I had had consistent sales since the 1st of the year.  So I downgraded back to my basic store.  I am not going to get stuck with higher fess and no sales?????????????

There is nothing wrong with the search engine.  I can always find past sellers I have used with the purchase history.  You also have the saved sellers list as well.  I always purchase from good sellers I have bought from in the past.  I love ebay as far as buying, I can always find what I want.

All you have to do is go to the eBay forum and see the hundreds plus posts on the search and how awful it's become.  A couple of people not having a problem doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist. It just means that eBay isn't messing with them.

@Canbrit

All the complaining about search is in the sellers forums.

When I go to the buyers forums I don't see many complaining about NOT being able to find what they are searching for.

Tool,

Because the buyers don't complain they just go to someplace else and don't come back again.

This is what has happened to us.
After months of not selling any items. I googled all our items only to find out that the link leads to a page saying we have removed the item and the listing is no longer active.
In other words, a customer searching for that item in google cannot buy the item because the listing has expired. The problem is that the listing is live and active in our Ebay items.

Effective sometime Friday, my regular non-promoted items started selling. On Saturday I sold more items then I sold in months with a normal mix of promoted items. On Sunday, sales returned to low level but strangely none were promoted items. I will have to keep an eye on it but I hope it has not gone the other way again (where promoted get no views as they did a few months ago.)

Old news - it really signaled the beginning of the end when eBay decided to manipulate search results. I wonder if they are trying to kill off the die-hards like me who still list one-of-a-kind collectibles at auction. I mean, who in their right mind would list at auction with a reasonable opening bid when you have no idea whether or not anyone will even see your listing?

there is something wrong with ebay's search. I've been selling for 11 years, i know what is normal and what isn't.  My sales dropped in sept 60%, 70% oct and this month is shaping up to be as bad. i just went to search best match for a print ad in collectibles using the search with a filter by date. the first page is dominated by one seller not even 100% feedback charging for returns and shipping he has 98 listings IN A ROW on the first page many other sellers on the first page have less then 100% feedback do not offer free shipping or returns and appear to have long handling times, while many have less then 100 feedback . i have free shipping, returns, 100% feedback and 1 day handle yet only 3 of my listings are on the 1st page and only one shows my promotion, if that isn't a screwed up best match search i don't know what is
