Seller Fearful of USPS International after Pandemic Losses

By: Reader

Dear Ina,
Have you done any stories about, or know where I can find information about current international shipping service status?

All of our international packages were lost in 2020 after the start of the pandemic. USPS refused to honor the insurance claims. We stopped selling internationally.

The pandemic has dragged on for years. We have international buyers, but no way to tell if shipping has returned to normal.

Same exact thing happened to me, except in my case, it was long before the pandemic.  I haven't sold internationally for many years as a result.

There are EU countries that can make million dollar road cars, but have abysmal postal services.

USPS hands off stuff at international airports and "in their minds" its considered delivered - even though it of course is not.

USPS is difficult to deal with (at best) in getting info and refunds - and like others here, I long ago stopped using them for overseas shipments. Its a loosing proposition.

If I must, then I use eBays international shipping program - I sent it to Kentucky and then Im done (ok you still get the usual eBay BS (you can open a case for INR even though its a Global Shipping sale but whatever - its EBAY))

Im in ecommerce - Im not here to play Russian Roulette - and I encourage every one to have that mindset - since NO ONE cares about your money except YOU.

I sold a fair amount to Canada when 2 lbs via Priority was $29...now it's $42.
Haven't sold squat in the last 2 years.
It's a non-issue.

Again the OP is not me. I have not sold anything international for years since the price is so high.
I have been on here for over 20 years and I have no idea who this Bill is.

"We stopped selling internationally."

I did that years ago when eBay forced sellers to pay return international shipping for SNADs.  I only sell internationally on my website. For too risky.

I used the ebay international shipping option for 95% of my orders going to various countries with no issues before, during, and present covid conditions. Most of the time ebay uses DHL for many shipments, or Asendia. I would recommend buying insurance through the third party on these shipments such as u-pic insurance but I have had zero claims for the past 2+ years.

About 20-30% of my gross income is international sales depending on how good my USA sales are. I ship almost exclusively using Ebay International Shipping and if the item does not arrive they are very good at paying my claims. Shipped two packages the same day to two different countries back in May and both failed to arrive. I filed claims within days of each other and within a couple days had the money back.

I recently purchased an item from overseas and USPS promptly lost it once it got to their facility in New York.  They have been trying to locate it since April.  Pathetic.
