Fanatics Disrupts One of eBay's Key Focus Categories

After acquiring trading card company Topps last year, Fanatics is reportedly acquiring trading card company PWCC. If the name sounds familiar, PWCC had sold on eBay and was a major partner in the trading cards category, but then found itself accused by eBay of shill bidding and suspended from the marketplace.

ActionNetwork and ESPN reported the news on Monday, though Fanatics and PWCC do not appear to have officially announced the news themselves.

ESPN reported that "sources close to the deal" said the acquisition would prove beneficial to Fanatics Live, its planned live-shopping platform expected to launch in the second half of 2023.

eBay began focusing on a vertical strategy as early as 2020, with Trading Cards one of its first "Focus Categories." It invested a lot of resources into building the category which soared during the pandemic. After it ejected PWCC, it launched its own authentication service and collectibles vault to compete with PWCC, and it has also been trying to get live-shopping off the ground.

One collector saw the Fanatics acquisition as an opportunity for PWCC to make amends with eBay, tweeting

I just made a post that the most important asset of this sale is that physical vault and everything within it.  Simply retire the name "PWCC", rebrand as Fanatics Auctions and they'll be back in the good graces with eBay in no time and cross selling.

But much of the reaction on social media focused on Fanatics' power in the industry, with some calling it a monopoly. One collector commented on Reddit, "So Fanatics is going to make the cards in their design studio, package the cards in their warehouses, rip the cards on their break platform, and then sell the singles that end up in their auction house. Sounds like fun!"

Fanatics is a behemoth in the sports world with over 18,000 employees, and hundreds of partners, suppliers, and vendors worldwide. Here's how it describes itself in part:

"Fanatics is building a leading global digital sports platform. The company ignites the passions of global sports fans and maximizes the presence and reach for hundreds of sports partners globally by offering innovative products and services across Fanatics Commerce, Fanatics Collectibles, and Fanatics Betting & Gaming, allowing sports fans to Buy, Collect and Bet. Through the Fanatics platform, sports fans can buy licensed fan gear, jerseys, lifestyle and streetwear products, headwear, and hardgoods; collect physical and digital trading cards, sports memorabilia, and other digital assets; and bet as the company builds its Sportsbook and iGaming platform. Fanatics has an established database of over 100 million global sports fans, a global partner network with over 900 sports properties, including major national and international professional sports leagues, teams, players associations, athletes, celebrities, colleges, and college conferences, and over 2,000 retail locations, including its Lids retail business stores."

ActionNetwork said with Monday's news, Fanatics has gained immediate traction in the online auction space, and explained what may have been behind the recent layoffs at PWCC, reported by Oregon Live on May 1st.

ActionNetwork claimed that PWCC had gotten in a bit of a pickle, reporting that it had allowed collectors to take loans out against cards stored in its vault, using the cards as collateral. "That helped light the card market on fire as some of those people then took their loan money to buy more," it wrote, "But when the market plummeted, there were enough of those people who just said, "I'll keep my money, you keep my cards.""

Another company impacted by Fanatics ambitions is Goldin, which launched its own marketplace in January with the backing of Mets owner and infamous hedge fund manager Steve Cohen.

Will eBay be able to play nice with Fanatics, which sells merchandise on eBay? And will Fanatics, rumored to be going public, continue to be unstoppable?

Payment(s) WILL be made and they will be (to use ebays words) BANG ON towards getting them front and center in that category

Apologies to any smaller sellers who are still in it who think they will still be able to compete…..

"𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒃𝒂𝒚 𝑽𝒂𝒖𝒍𝒕"

-. hahaha This company makes me chuckle.  Bunch of failed, short sighted daffodils in their think tanks.
Etsy included. These rocket scientists ban or suspend more sellers than they have actual active users!  HOW do they make ANY money??  Man, If I were (dumb enough) to be a shareholder, . . . Can you only imagine how ridiculous you have to be to put your money into this company?? You'd be that guy at the backyard BBQ whose apron catches on fire while leaning over the grill while turning the chops - all thumbs, no foresight and a boatload of stupid ingrained within your DNA.

eBay is going to go under, sellers are moving to Goldin, Mercari, and this deal will seal eBay's fate as a has been, when you are losing share as they have, 8 consecutive quarterly declines in sales and a pay to play ghosting search engine, the results can only get worse as sellers who are eBay's largest buyers rush to the gates to leave.  The Barn Door is open and the horses are gone.

The more big merchants that come onto eBay the harder it will be for eBay to get the same margins. They both have lawyers. Good luck keeping it together ebay... Great execution for long term profit maximization!

eBay needs Fanatics more than the other way ‘round.  And that can be extrapolated across all their brain-spurted verticals.

But all they have to offer is a ‘promise’ to deliver the buyers.  Buyers who can’t buy from Fanatics (etc.) if they are distracted by other choices.

So what eBay doesn’t need, are distractions.  Other choices.  “Noise” in the signal.  You.  Unless you want to pay for it.  Because what they do need, is your money.

So they can afford to tidy up the facade, so they can maintain an illusion of being ‘attractive’ to their crushes.

Fanatics has better programmers than eBay, they may use eBay for a while longer, but look for them to blow eBay out of the water by opening their own marketplace same as Goldin did, the owner of Goldin could buy all of eBay and shut it down with the money in his back pocket, eBay is finished.

eBay could just buy them if they wanted - and PRETEND that eBay is a level playing field ..... they have that much free (sellers) cash. (Maybe Griff could even give up his free candy bad allotment for the week to help pitch in and free up some cash)

But probably NOT

There will be a secret meeting, envelopes of cash will be traded, all will be forgiven and eBay will "tilt itself into final destruction of that category"

Snapped is (of course) %100 correct, that eBay needs them more then they need eBay.

eBays painted itself into a corner (by being "BANG ON") and telling anyone that will listen how trading cards are one of its "special focused categories" (the dope in charge thinks theres still free cash being given out ALA Covid, when people are out of work, eggs are north of 4 a dozen, gas is creeping back up to $4 a gallon (or higher if bozo joe gets round #2) ... sure - Im gonna rush right out and buy $800 woth of Jordans and a few "hunny" of Pokemon cards .......

Momma always said "stupid is as stupid does" (thank you Forrest)

eBay actually suspends for shill bidding??? I have reported one of the biggest sellers or antiques on eBay over 100 times with nothing happening. Incontrovertible evidence, I kept a large folder.
