eBay Works on Mending New Listing Tool but Hits a Snag

Sellers have pleaded for weeks for eBay to fix its new listing tool foisted upon them last month, and last week, they reported signs of improvement in the tool. But last week's update also seem to have resulted in a glitch impacting sellers listing books and music involving ISBN and UPC codes in Item Specifics.

For booksellers, it's no small problem - sellers reported it on the eBay boards and on Ecommerce EKG, and it was confirmed by third-party developer and active eBay discussion-board poster Shipscript.

You can read more about the problems sellers reported with the new listing tool beginning in mid-April on this April 22nd EcommerceBytes Blog post. eBay has been working on the tool for a long time, but last month, many sellers said it became mandatory for them to use it.

One vocal critic of the listing tool praised eBay on Thursday for changes that rolled out last week:

"I have been very vocal and critical of the new unified listing tool as it was released on a desktop so I wanted to give credit where credit is due.

"They just updated the Item specifics section to more closely resemble the classic listing tool. More of the fields are actually right on the main page instead of those disruptive popup boxes. Instead the "see more" prompts for everything are now small dropdown boxes that are simple to navigate.

"It makes the section so much easier to use, as it is more typical of a computer design interface instead of a mobile phone app. It is definitely a giant step in the right direction. We do not care if you want to change the style of the box to make it look more modern (rounded corners instead of gray square boxes etc.), but this listing tool must work and function as efficiently as the classic and be optimized to give us a superior desktop experience."

The seller went on to say that eBay had reached out and invited them to a Zoom meeting with 7 of eBay's design-team members. The seller accepted and walked the employees through the problems with the new listing tool.

The seller also was quick to point out that eBay's job was not done - "The shipping section NEEDS the redesign next, it has far too many complicated submenus and toggles and hidden features to be effective- when you get it closer to the classic and more like the redesigned item specifics and move most if not all to editable fields on the main screen, we will have a working listing tool that can be further tweaked and refined without as much urgency."

Other sellers were not pleased with last week's changes, reporting new "page-jumping" issues and annoying pop-up windows.

Let us know if eBay requires you to use the new listing tool and if you have any problems with it. Was last week's update an improvement?

I've been reading about the problems with it.
Luckily, I am still on the old listing form.
I always let others be the guinea pigs first.
I am staying with the old form until I am forced into the new one.

Just a heads up for anyone on the old form that wants to see the new one; there are posts in the forums stating that once you opt to change to check it out, you can no longer switch back.
That is on the UK forums though.

Here is a novel thought. The desktop version was fine as is. I do not recall any complaints about it. Desktop users use their laptops or desktop computers for listing for a reason. Ebay tried to lump mobile users and PC users in the same group and it is not working out. They have created problems and glitches where none existed and for absolutely no reason. And just created more bad blood between sellers and ebay.

“.. eBay had reached out and invited them to a Zoom meeting with 7 of eBay's design-team members.”

Imagine that.  A seller’s inputs solicited to fix issues.  Wonder if they’ll ever come to realize these ‘issues’ wouldn’t exist in the first place had they taken a similar approach - in the first place.

Of course, the ‘teams’ would have to sacrifice 1/2 the pay they get for doing it twice if they got it right from the start, but that’s the breaks of competence.  Maybe they just never heard of “form follows function” being the foundational imperative in all design, and if you don’t know the function….

Now if they could only apply some good ol’ professional integration testing before unleashing it on the masses, maybe they could curtail some of those unforeseen ‘glitches’ that also seem to unnecessarily accompany every eBay ‘enhancement’.

A lot to hope for…

Ebay will never get away from their two rule system.

Rule 1 Ebay is ALWAYS right.
Rule 2 In the event that Ebay is wrong about something. Rule 1 will apply.

Once again, it is the no real experience people making all of these changes.  All of the information requested to list an item is not necessary, but a seller has to take the time to look at each line and then after the item gets listed, eBay sends a listing of item specifics that were not used by the seller so the seller can waste more time looking at it.  The only answer to all of these eBay problems is that someone creates a new, easy and correct way of selling online and puts eBay out of business.

There was nothing wrong with the old listing tool...now it takes twice as long to do the same thing with those wonky item specific boxes.  Terrible

If it ain't broke, eBay will "fix" it.

Lots of folks at eBay trying to justify their jobs by constantly reinventing the wheel.

Most of the time"Item specifics" come nowhere CLOSE to what I am trying to list and ebay keeps nagging me to "Add these specifics".
For instance if I listed a cow, they would nag me about the color, Blue, red, purple, green, hot pink... what material , cotton, wool, naugahyde, plastic, slate, cedar shake.... How many legs? two, three. six, eight. and so on.

I am so tired of clicking 3 times when once used to be enough.
These fools are discouraging listing by wasting our time.

Fortunately I have not been forced to use ebay's newest garbage. In most all cases using ebay and enhancement in the same sentence creates an oxymoron. In nearly 18 years on ebay I have never seen their "updates" or "enhancements" actually being a benefit to the sellers without jumping thru hoops and tweaking things to make it actually work. I get constant emails saying I have 100s of listings needing required or recommended item specifics. It is a joke at best and frustration all the time. Checking into it in almost every case, the items specifics they "recommend" have absolutely nothing to do with the item being listed. An example is a small engine carburetor gasket with voltage?  wattage? Hp? as recommended???? item specifics. This was a piece of paper gasket??? It wouldn't be nearly as bad if they didn't delete all the item specifics from hundreds of my listings so I had to go in and spend hours of wasted time to fix all of their screwups.  I have gone over this stupidity with CS but it does no good. I have never used a web site that has as many glitches as ebays does. It is a every day occurrence.  I have many times requested that they fix the search so it actually finds what people are looking for rather than forcing them to go elsewhere to buy it. Their search if you can even call it that is the worst on the internet and if they do not put some time into logically fixing it, ebay will eventually go out because people want easy not aggravation and will continue to go to other sites as they have been doing by the millions and it will only get worse if they don't start using logic when designing things on their site. It is disgusting to see what ebay has become and is failing so badly. The new CEO makes me think of the Peter principle as he tries to do things beyond his capabilities and focuses on a non sustainable business model that cannot work for ebay

I list on a desktop, always have.

I tried the new listing too yesterday. and all I have to say is

ROTFLMAO, it spent more time going in circles then politicians do!

At least it let me go back to the old listing tool.

6/6/22 — Ebay shipping services down right now. Can’t even print a shipping label for two different items, that’s another good reason I have 3-5 business days handling time on my listings.

They should have TWO tools. The new one for people who want to lie in bed, using their phones to list and are too lazy to create a working form that will sell their products the most efficiently. Doing that on a phone will NEVER work.

And keep the old listing tool as well for those of us who have been selling using a PC/desktop for decades and already KNOW there's not a single thing wrong with the current tool and let us carry on selling successfully.

Hey eBay, just try listing on Mercari or Poshmark. It take under a minute, no one cares about all those item specifics. Dear God, you have the measurements of books, who is looking for that?

Back in the 50's when it was raining at recess time, the nuns would give us "busy work" to pass the time at our desk.
These worthless listing forms are just that..."busy work". They were hatched by worthless programmers who would rather be somewhere else.

@smallseller - I totally agree! The old listing tool is just fine! Thankfully I'm still able to use it.

Is the image editor in the new version getting any closer to the old version?

Use Pirate Ship or equivalent for shipping.
Use Auctiva or similar for listing.

Don't use eBay for those functions, and your troubles go away.

I see people needlessly beating themselves up.  I feel for ya, but at some point you just have to circumvent the problem and get some peace.
