eBay Forces Sellers into New Unified Listing Tool

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers report eBay is forcing them to use a new listing tool that they say makes the job of adding items for sale more difficult. If you have a feeling of deja vu, it's because the same thing happened a year ago. In March 2021, a seller had written in a letter to the Editor that more publicity needed to be given to the new eBay unified listing experience tool, calling for a "unified pushback" to what they called a horrible update.

One year later, sellers are again reporting that they're unable to go back to using the old tool.

Last month (on March 14), an eBay moderator said clicking the three vertical dots on the upper right corner of the listing form would give sellers the option to switch back to the classic view. But 5 weeks later on April 21, longtime forum poster and third-party eBay developer "shipscript" said the ability to "go back" was only temporary, adding, "eBay intends to gradually move everyone to the new listing tool."

Some sellers began discussing the new listing form in a thread in early April after the eBay for Business podcast reportedly said (once again) that the old form would be retired but not saying when. One seller took the time to review the new listing tool in a post back on April 5th. Among the problems they identified were the following:

- Significant lag when opening a listing/draft with the new listing tool.

- No more HTML ("If you're like me and write your own code for your descriptions and/or have descriptive listings with different fonts, etc., that's over," the seller wrote).

- Loss of draft data.

- Video cannot be added to variation listings.

The seller said they had provided eBay with feedback over the previous month (March 2022) but saw no changes: "Since using the new listing tool, I've sent several "Tell us what you think" comments to eBay over the last month, but have seen zero improvements. I can't even describe the amount of time I've wasted on this thing - something that used to take me 5 minutes now takes 30."

Last year, eBay announced the "New unified listing experience" on January 19, 2021. And Harry Temkin, who is no longer with eBay, introduced it in video on Facebook the same day.

Relying on a platform's own tools isn't always the best option - third-party developers offer features marketplaces don't necessarily offer. But there are costs to using third-party services - and even then there are risks. The most recent example - a sellers said the tool he uses, Crazy Lister, has not been working for the past 3 weeks due to eBay API issues.

Yesterday in yet another thread, an eBay moderator confirmed eBay was making the new listing tool mandatory:

"I did some asking around and it sounds like they're working to make this permanent for sellers. That means groups of sellers are being migrated to the new listing flow without an option to return to the classic listing form.

"Not the response you wanted I know, but that is why you aren't seeing the option to revert to the classic listing flow now.

"From here, I would encourage you to submit your Feedback via the link in the listing form I noted in my last post. Hopefully between using it more, and any updates that come about due to seller feedback, you'll grow to like the new format."

Temkin, who was brought on by former eBay CEO Devin Wenig, is gone from the company; with current eBay CEO Jamie Iannone hiring back former eBay techies in key positions, will anything change for sellers in the trenches?

Update 4/22/2022: Other issues reported on this eBay thread: "you cannot look up by ISBN numbers, cannot use ebay descriptions, cannot use stock photos,..."

You have to be legitimately psycho to still be knuckling under to EbAy.

-Yeah, well...that's life.  Life is filled with changes. To submit to these barbaric oppressive edicts is laughable to me.  I DESPERATELY counted on the extra funds since 1999, but guess what?  I have survived.  There's ALWAYS options.

Virtually unreal that submissive mindless androids are still among us thinking that Ebay is still a viable "option".

I for one, will be laughing from the sidelines at others' misfortunes when dealing with Ebay.  You wanna swim with the sharks,  then that's on you.

"will anything change for sellers in the trenches?"

From the outside looking in, it appears that sellers in the trenches continue to have eBay throwing dirt on them.

This reminds me of when eBay lied about having a new tool to replace Turbolister, which they never did.

"Well, it's eBay's playground so they get to make the rules.", as some commenters here would say.

And they are right. But what you gonna do about it? Stay and cry? Or just maybe.....here's a radical idea.....take your balls elsewhere?

They are such A-holes for forcing this on sellers. It takes 4 or 5 times longer to list an item with this trainwreck. You can really tell that whoever created this does not sell on eBay.

Meanwhile at Poshmark, eCRATER, Amazon and Etsy you can list an item in under a minute to two minutes.

Peddling backwards as always. Always creating busy work which keeps sellers from running their businesses efficiently.

Aren't tools supposed to simplify things?

โ€œ eBay Forces Sellers..โ€

Three little words.  Sometimes it all boils down to an astonishingly simple concept, doesnโ€™t it?

You may well dance at the ball if you fit that shoe, only this glass slipper binds you to a homely prince.  In a corrupted court.  With a naked emperor.  In a crumbling castle.  Where no one will listen to your petitions.  #NotCamelot.

The End says "Force Redirect to eCrater.com   :o)"

I could not agree with The End more.  Sell on either eCrater or your own website.   If even 1/2 of eBay sellers would sell, promote and buy on eCrater a lot of their headaches would vanish.   I think it is the easiest place to list and if you get your attributes right your items can be seen in Google Shopping.  I've been selling their for many years and they let me run my show and they stay out of my business.

If there's an option for international shipping when choosing "sell similar", it's amazingly well hidden.

The End and Rexford know what they're talking about. I've been with eCrater since 2008 and it's so easy to list, and my items get seen and sell. No Seller Updates and no radical changes to the site.

I am always interested in the other venues sellers use to sell their products. That being so, I looked further into eCrater as some posters mentioned this website. I checked some reviews of eCrater and this is what I found (general statement):

"Ecrater has a consumer rating of 2.76 stars from 309 reviews indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases."

Really of the first 10 reviews I read about eCrater, only one was positive; the other 9 gave a one-star rating.

eBay's design department I believe is an undergrad Computer Science 101 class somewhere. Approximately once a year they completely overhaul something and it is blatantly obvious that degigned by people with no real world experience whatsoever.

Get a Grip says: "Your not being forced into anything.  You do have a choice.....Whine Or Leave"

Oh really?  Then tell us how to list on eBay without using this train wreck of a listing tool.  There is no option so yes, they are forcing this on sellers.

Perhaps sellers would not whine so much if eBay would quit mucking things up.  If you have been reading on ecommercebytes for years you will see that when it comes to eBay sellers have plenty of things to whine about.

And Ronn, I have never read what posters say about eCrater. I can only tell you that my experience there has been a good one.  I have not had one single return either in all of the years that I have been selling there.  Their fees are rock bottom so my margins on my sales are excellent.

Form Follows Function.  Thatโ€™s like, a prerequisite to design 101.  Unless ignorance follows arrogance.  Offhandedly denying user input for any tool design neglects attention to the most important โ€˜interfaceโ€™ in the whole โ€˜systemโ€™.  The end result is exampled in eBayโ€™s new Useless-ified Listing Tool.

When it comes to using eBay, they will FORCE sellers to use it, or FORCE sellers to NARU status.    โ€œTruthโ€ is, neither โ€œchoiceโ€ is good.  Indeed, that probably โ€œhurtsโ€.  A swift kick in the nethers usually does.

When I checked out the new tool about 2 weeks ago, there was an option for html. It is not easy to find like the old form but its there. Now I am afraid to check it again and won't be able to get back out to old form...
