Carvana lists cars on eBay, but it kicked off the New Year with a dismal 75% positive feedback rating and poor Detailed Seller Ratings (only 3 stars for Communication, and 4 stars for Item as Described).
A reader tipped us off on Saturday and said he believed eBay resets Carvana's percentage ratings every month back to 100% - something we cannot confirm since we received his email on Saturday, and Carvana's feedback still stands at 75%.
However, there are signs of trouble beyond the grim feedback from eBay buyers. A few people in a
thread on Reddit started 8 months ago said it appeared to them that Carvana was not updating their eBay listings after the cars sold elsewhere.
In response to a buyer who wondered if buying a car from Carvana through eBay was legit, another poster on Reddit advised them to go directly through Carvana's own website. "Just double check that the car is available on the Carvana site before purchasing on eBay is all I'm really saying. Wouldn't be the first time they have sold an already sold car."
Another Redditer who weighed in on the thread 5 months ago had harsher words for the practice of what he characterized as "selling cars on their sites when they are already spoken for."
On Saturday night when we checked Carvana's feedback on eBay, 8 out of 43 feedback were negative (and 4 were neutrals). Buying and bidding on
eBay Motors is different from buying on the core marketplace, and it's unclear to us if the feedback was left for unconsummated or cancelled transactions.
"Sold something they didn't have," wrote one eBay buyer. "The cars they offer on eBay are not available," wrote another.
"Car was not even available, wrote a third. "They don't respond to message on eBay at all. I had to call the company to find out that they don't have it. They said it did not even show anywhere in their system. They have no explanations for anything. I hate to leave negative feedback because of positive dealings that I have had with the company other than on eBay, but maybe this will get their attention and they can fix these issues."
The EcommerceBytes reader who pointed us to the
Carvana eBay feedback said they found it nearly impossible to sell anything on eBay these days even at bargain basement prices and said he believed it was related to a problem of trust on the marketplace.
While eBay Motors is different from eBay.com, would you survive on eBay with a 75% feedback rating?
It's not the first time a seller has accused eBay of engaging in "feedback cleansing" for big brand sellers. Let us know if you see any accounts that exhibit strange behavior around feedback or anything else.
