Are the New eBay Feedback Reviews Driving You Crazy?

Sellers are weighing in on the new feedback format eBay rolled out this month, and it sounds like it's driving some people crazy.

eBay announced what some have dubbed "paragraph feedback" at the end of March, explaining:

"Previously, sellers and buyers could only leave feedback of up to 80 characters. We realize that's often not enough space to include important details, so we're increasing our feedback fields to allow a maximum of 500 characters. This will apply when you leave feedback for buyers, receive feedback from buyers, and reply to buyer feedback."

On this eBay thread, a seller referred to the long format as "feedback essays" and shared a screenshot of an example of a long feedback review left by an unhappy buyer.

"I saw one that repeated the words "suck it" in a huge block," replied another. "This is going to get ugly," said a third seller.

On one Facebook Group for eBay sellers, a lively debate ensued over how upset sellers who receive a "full-length" review should get. Some sellers dismissed a colleague's angst over a long feedback the seller felt was unfair. Others thought the new format made feedback look too cluttered.

When we first wrote about the new format, one reader speculated buyers might write *product* reviews instead of reviewing the experience they had with the seller.

why does anyone need more then 80 characters to describe a purchase?

"I went to Target, they didnt have my sweater, the Starbucks was out of soy milk, the girl there didnt smile at me, the toilet paper was rough, they were out of Captain Crunch, there werent enough shopping carts in the store, I didnt get any freebies or coupons on checkout only a receipt and oh yeh the sweater I bought was great and it looks fantastic on me!"

THAT kinda feedback?

eBay .. always coddling buyers.

Come to think of it ... MY reviews on eBay as a business are more then 80 characters .... but "eBay sucks" works too.

When it comes to need to express all that is corrupt and wrong with eBay’s feedback process, 500 characters would not be enough. But why not give the buyers a wider latitude to express a fuller level to which they may be unhinged?

As all of my previously saved feedback is no longer accessible for reuse by simply clicking on one of my standardized responses, I have stopped leaving any.

While independent merchant e-commerce sites focus on product reviews, a relic of the 20th century, feedback for users is only found on venues, where less than reputable sellers can be found.

Is it just me or do other sellers assign the eBay  "Alice in Wonderland" behavior to its California roots?  In another life, I dealt with California companies and, in the initial, realized I had to change my mindset.  It was like we were speaking two different languages.
My apologies to all the astute sellers that hail from CA.

This latest iteration of feedback is a "solution looking for a problem. EBay , please, there are 'bigger fish to fry."

Feedback on eBay has become less and less meaningful & useful. Upping it to 500 words will not change a system that has toe tags on it.

Utterly ridiculous of eBay to encourage nut jobs who hate everything about their lives and feel the need to take it out on sellers.  80 characters was more than adequate to state how much you hated what you bought, how it was the sellers fault you bought it and how teed off you are that the seller did not refund your money and give you the item for free, and how it is the sellers fault USPS didn't deliver it when eBay said they would..

However, 500 characters seems about right for sellers to adequately respond to the undeserved neg with the facts that the buyer did not read the description and is personally at fault for buying something they did not want, or demanded more than they paid for, or the listing clearly states the part fits product A but buyer thought he could make it fit product C, or the listing clearly states non-working for parts only but the buyer goes off the rails because they received exactly what they ordered but gee whiz, it didn't work, etc.

I used to write neg comments if needed, on a pos for bad buyers. The buyers complained (several of them), went to ebay, and ebay removed them.

According to Ebay, members were asking for more space to leave FB.  I actually can agree that probably is true, however I think it is extremely doubtful ANYONE was thinking of a short story format [500 characters] for FB.

It is more likely they were looking for around 100 characters over 80.

Oh and Ebay said that those asking for more space was for positive FB.  I call BULL on that one.  Even with 80 characters, most that leave positive FB don't use the space so why in the world would they need 500 characters.

I think in time Ebay will stop this.  The clutter would be one reason, the additional time spent by customer service for sellers wanting to get some of the short stories removed because they are product reviews or some other reason that breaches the FB rules.  And I think they will find in time they are going to chew up a whole lot of storage space.

Got my first negative ever the other day. Her long-winded complaint  didn’t seem to even match what she purchased and she accused me of attempting to deceive with my listing.  She hasn’t responded to my messages trying to resolve her issue. But when I left her feedback I could only use 80 characters. It appears that the 500 is being limited to buyers.

My belief is that the Feedback System is OBSOLETE! it causes eBay to waste money by employing CSR reps, and causes great pro sellers to leave eBay out of disgust. eBay has a 100% money back guarantee, that's all you need! All that need be said is,  # of items sold; your  all time sales history Vs. # of items returned! Divide;  returns/ sales= % feedback. A much more honest accurate system. No seller would ever get 100%, BUT, sole Proprietors sellers would get much high % than they get with the current one year %.

I closed my eBay store in December, but I keep reading these articles and comments so I'm not tempted to go back. It's working.
