Partial Amazon Outage Impacts Sellers and Buyers

A partial Amazon outage impacted sellers today (December 7). We believe the site was accessible throughout, but sellers were unable to complete certain tasks. Most worrisome: customers reported having difficulties placing orders.

The issue may have been due to a problem at Amazon's AWS service, with people reporting problems with services that use AWS hosting - including Amazon Alexa and Amazon-owned Ring doorbells.

DownDetector indicates the problem began sometime around 10:30 am. (We tweeted the issue at 11:03 am ET.)

Amazon sellers described the problems they were having in a  discussion board thread titled, "Sorry, there's nothing new for you here yet. Stay tuned!" That apparently was the message Amazon was displaying.

"They are messing with things in one of the busiest weeks of the year. Ugh," wrote one seller. "Same here. Got a ton of customer messages and most of them wont load so we cant reply to them. This is swell. GREAT TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE CHANGES AMAZON," wrote another.

"I do not even have orders coming in on the seller App. Everything stopped around 7:30 pacific time," said one seller on the thread.

On DownDetector, a buyer said their entire shopping cart disappeared, and she wasn't sure if her orders went through. "So frustrating and no one is answering the chat," she wrote.

Some of the issues sellers described on the discussion board thread included the following:

- cannot list
- cannot print shipping label
- cannot cancel an order
- cannot read or respond to customer messages

Not being able to print labels for orders can negatively impact seller performance: "So are our sales all late now if we cannot purchase any shipping," a seller asked.

"I love how everything is down right now, except these forums which are working just fine," one a frustrated seller wrote.

Sometime after 12:30 am, some people reported they were seeing services return to normal.

This literally happens every single Holiday season and I wouldn't call it partial. No orders, can't respond to messages, can't print labels, can't access returns, can't appeal compliance complaints and my personal Amazon account only shows magazine subscriptions when I log on to Amazon.com. They have a major outage every holiday season, you would think this self-proclaimed "tech company" would actually have their crap together during the busiest time of the year.
