eBay Considers Radical Changes to Seller Stores

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is surveying sellers about its eBay Stores offering, and some of the changes under consideration are radically different than its current offerings. In addition, the new approach may put pressure on third-party inventory-management services.

Currently, eBay offers five packages ranging from a Starter eBay Store ($4.95/month for an annual subscription) to an Enterprise eBay Store ($2.999.95/month).

One change would be moving toward a build-your-own-store package, as we described in today's Newsflash article.

The survey also presented 30 different Store packages with each showing different features and costs.

The survey itself, and some of the features described, were complicated.

Given the challenges sellers already face in analyzing their eBay invoices, it is hard to imagine how they could determine if eBay calculated their fees correctly for any given month given some of the convoluted discount structures being considered.

For example, some of the discounts described are based on quarterly performance targets.

Some Discounts under Consideration

- 1,000 free listings if monthly sales volume on eBay exceeds $10K. Additional fixed price listings 10 cents each.

- Growth based discounts: 5% discount on eBay final value fees if quarterly eBay sales volume increases 20%.

- 20% discount up to $50 on self-service, cost-per-click ads for individual listings appearing in search results page and on View Item or Product pages.

- 20% discount on eBay final value fees.

- 20% discounts on eBay fees for listings placed on other eBay sites i.e. eBay Germany.

Some Benefits under Consideration
eBay also presented some benefits that are not currently available.

 - Free returns insurance (worth $50 per month)

- Inventory insurance (worth $50 per month)

- Bronze data package: Buyer segmentation insights that help you understand your buyers Behaviors.

- Silver data package: Sourcing insights/opportunities that help you understand what type of inventory is in demand on eBay and likely to sell quickly.

- Gold data package: Marketplace data APIs (eg: real time reporting on your traffic & performance, price competitiveness data, marketplace benchmarks, sourcing insights & opportunities data).

- Access to dedicated team of customer service agents.

- 1-to-1 personal account management: eBay head office lead, 10 hours per month.

Additional Exposure under Consideration
Some of the new plans under consideration describe added exposure, such as the following:

- Listings eligible for Daily Deals participation

- Ability to run Seller promotions (SME)

- Ability to display your eBay listing on other sites i.e. Google search/Yahoo etc. & pay a reduced fee for buyer traffic driven by these sites.

- Seller participation in eBay coupon deals events/ campaigns (you will be co-funding these)

- Live video streaming on store front, news letter targeting to buyer segments.

- Influencer driven traffic for your storefront.

Ramifications for Third-Party Inventory Management Services
Under some scenarios, eBay described the following options:

- eBay will offer cross marketplace inventory management, bringing efficiency in business management, eliminating the need for a third party provider.

- You can onboard inventory to eBay using inventory files from other marketplaces.

That indicates eBay is considering offering more inventory-management services than it currently provides, with the potential to impact third-party services.

Let us know what eBay Store features you'd like to see and how much you'd be willing to pay for them.

really.....really?? this is all they have to offer? I use other 3rd party tools and I am sure they will NOT be able to compete with them on service or price.....they need to stick to just being a venue and work on fixing it! I am so over their SH**T!

Watch it might be a “La Carte” model but will cost more for exactly the same as you have.

I'd be willing to pay NOTHING more than I pay now.  I sell on other sites, including my own that do not charge me to list and I am happy to move more inventory to them.  My inventory is actually seen on these other sites and I am not throttled nor am I capped at how much I can sell per month.

One can easily deduce from what is written above that these are nothing more than potential schemes that eBay will use to monetize, reaching ever deeper into our pockets.

I am waiting for them to implement surge pricing during the holidays.

I would love to meet the seller(s) that would actually be interested in any of this. As many people have mentioned, please fix the glitches and what sellers are unhappy with, before creating new things that sellers have not asked for and do not want. I am currently paying for a store which in the fine print of the TOS says that there is no guarantee that my listings will be seen. Why would I want to pay more and have my listings still not seen?

Growth based discounts: 5% discount on eBay final value fees if quarterly eBay sales volume increases 20%.

This from a company that has posted one >4% growth quarter in the last 10 years.

Shopify
Lauyan (TOWeb)
CoffeCup
and ALL The other "Make your own site" sites.
How stupid.
Ebay, go back to being a wholly American auction venue, or DIE.

This is a melange of pointless changes that eBay would Screw-Up from one end to the other.

Worse than pointless, as I see MOST of them as costing More than I currently pay for a Premium Store.

NOPE.   I am NOT a mouth-breather so I'm already innoculated against this sort of NO HELP ;;; HELP.at a higher cost and pointless extra work.

Its called desperation as nobody that works for Ebay knows how to increase business, so they are now going to try and entice Sellers to do it for them.  Sounds like another Devin Wenig thought process where the Sellers once again do all the work for them since they do not have the personnel capable of bailing enough water out of the sinking ship on their own.

This is just going to turn into another poorly written program which will wind up costing Sellers more and more time as Ebay will once again farm the programming out to the companies in India that will once again do the programming for the lowest price.  This will be no different than all of their other attempts to improve their site by expecting the Sellers to fix it for them with useless glitch filled software, very much like their famous catalog.

Try fixing what is currently wrong with your site before once again pushing more intentional as well as unintentional glitches foisted on your Sellers by the inept offshore programmers.  You continue to use programmers who just cannot ever get the job done correctly, or have they been getting it done correctly since all of the glitches seem to make more money for Ebay and never get addressed when it comes to fixing things?  All these changes you seem to be interested in are going to take a lot more time being invested by your Sellers who tried to tell your former executives that the changes Ebay was making to their stores in an attempt to make them all geneically looking the same was such a wrong path to take.  But Ebay knew best and destroyed all of the work and money that the Sellers had put into making their stores stand out and show their personality.  So now we are supposed to once again invest our time, effort and money to try and help Ebay show some growth when we do not even know if our items will be shown?  How long will it be until Ebay once again goes in another direction and destroys all of the work .done by the Sellers because Ebay is now afraid that their individuality is somehow going to cost Ebay money?

Fix all of the glitches that your company has ignored all these years under Wenig, many of them intentional to increase revenues and then maybe we can talk about putting our efforts into helping Ebay become a viable platform once again.  Until then, I guess it is once again time to move more and more products onto other sites where they will not steal from us nor allow their Buyers to steal our merchandise because they are afraid of maybe losing a Buyer, even though that Buyer uses your platform and policies to steal us blind.  Haven't you wondered why so many of the sellers you have remaining from long ago no longer sell higher end items on your site, but do have them listed on other sites?  Try fixing that problem and then maybe we will once again put some effort into trying to fix Ebay.

I went to Catholic school in the 50's. When it was raining at recess, the nuns would give us "busy work" to pass the time.
eBay is one ongoing piece of "busy work".

I've been selling in eBay for 21 years and have had a store for about 8 years. I never got any solicitation to take this new survey. Guess they don't want 'everyone's' opinions.

Don't you just know RIGHT NOW that eBay will only pick the Very WORST of all these Questionable "Improvements"?

Not even necessarily the ones that Generate Profit for eBay.   Yes, I'm a cynic, but I also allow that not EVRYBODY at eBay would fall into the category of AWFUL HUMANS, but in a corporation BURDENED with too many employees these Worker Bees will be under pressure to STAND OUT and have one of their own AWFUL ideas accepted by their own part of the Corporate Ladder.

More bait and switch tactics.
Like their unmentioned, unforeseen MP problems.
Sign you up, and let the problems begin.
Don't forget that everyone was Strong-Armed into MP.
Where was the survey before they launched that?
No?   Sign up, or you can't list?

When the cheerleaders, (employees) tell you that ebay is flourishing, and they won't miss your business, then comes the desperate ploy to reel in new, or retain existing sellers.

Like someone said already, it is a sign of desperation.  There is no REAL attempt to make ebay better, it's a dollar bill in a cage.
Just look up how many people want to cancel their subscriptions on the ebay community boards.

With all of their 'glitches', it looks more like tempting offers for a used, really old fixer-upper RV.

Ebay is the abusive 'partner' who is always sorry without ever admitting it.
Flowers don't heal bruises... or trust!
They steal whole dollar amounts CONSTANTLY, and offer LOW PERCENTAGES in return as 'savings'.
So this much (X%) you wont take from me?

It seems like just another way to get more money out of the sellers for their shareholders. Ebay is NOT for the seller or the buyer. eBay is working for the shareholders only. Managed payments is one of their biggest rip offs I have been extorted into by eBay in my over 18 years selling on Ebay. eBay forces you into managed payments, only to find out that when a buyer returns an item, and you do not have free shipping and returns, they will NOT give you any of your fees back at all unless you give 100% of the buyers money back. Keeping the shipping cost means a seller if giving a partial refund and the seller will get ZERO fees back from eBay. If you are NOT a managed payment seller, then you will get a portion of your fees back that reflect the partial refund given to the buyer.
Why is eBay trying to make selling so difficult and/or for the most computer savy people to be the most successful sellers who can figure all these possible new options/changes out ?  Being a top rated seller gets me NO FVF discounts like they used to with being a gold power seller with a 30% FVF discount for many years, until that was changed many years back, so that eBay keeps your hard earned money and make their shareholders happier. It is getting to the point that I have to keep raising my prices to keep up with all that eBay takes from my sales, which will no doubt lead to less sales for me. Especially now that eBay advertises rows and rows of competitor items on MY page when buyers pull up my listings.  My buyers cannot even find the listing descriptions on my items because eBay hides the listing descriptions now with competitor listings instead. Ebay really has ruined the entire experience for great sellers such as myself who has put up with all the bad changes over the years. Managed payments is just another rip off of the sellers. Now they want to invent more ways to rip off the sellers even more.

I'm still "TRAUMATIZED" from the ruler beating the nuns gave my knuckles on a regular basis. . . .Johnny, come to the front of the class! Put your hands on the desk! Out comes the ruler with a few swift hits on the knuckles. Now go back to your seat and be quiet. . . .
