eBay Flips Switch on Managed Payments

By: Ina Steiner

eBay switched on Managed Payments for more sellers yesterday, August 5, with many reporting they'd been migrated to the new system over the past 2 days.

We're seeing questions and comments from sellers, such as the one who told EcommerceBytes his listings for coins were removed due to the migration, which happened overnight. He received the following message: "We've removed your listing(s) because they don't meet eBay's managed payments requirements."

He said the listings eBay removed were all currency / coin based listings. "Wish they would have covered this in the transition checklist or at least allowed legacy listings to be covered," he said

Another seller who was migrated to Managed Payments yesterday asked a question on Reddit today about fees, saying he felt was being overcharged under the new system: "At the end of the day, my sales totaled $800.52, but my invoice was for 154.47. I sold 11 items in 9 transactions. Shipping labels totaled 38.76. Something seems really over priced. Is anyone else having an issue like this?"

eBay set up a special area on its discussion boards where sellers can ask questions, but eBay is only allowing sellers who are enrolled in Managed Payments to join - and it's now backlogged.

A seller who was forced to migrate to the Manage Payment system yesterday said he was unable to join - "Just got off the phone with eBay customer support. I asked how long it should take to be added to the "Manage Payment Discussion Group". After being on hold for 15 minutes, the guy came back and said it may take up to 7 business days to be added. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! 7 business days to add somebody to a discussion group. That is beyond ridiculous!"

Another seller who had the same problem responded with positive things to say about the new payments system, but, she added, "Problems come up with any new platform, and it would nice to see how other sellers resolved issues, especially since managed payments is not taking any inbound calls - at least that is what I was told."

"I'm the one that handles the board queue in addition to my other responsibilities in the Payments team. Much of my work is focused on content, and while the queue originally had a small amount of requests each day, the amount grew exponentially in July.

"We have improved the process to be more efficient, but even with that change there is room for improvement. So we are working on expediting things further. While I can't promise immediate access, I can say we're aiming to keep the approval wait to around a few days tops."

That reinforces the perception that eBay Customer Service is not fully prepared to deal with the Managed Payments rollout. We previously documented how eBay sellers being forced into Managed Payments in July at times experienced 6-hour wait times for phone support.

It doesn't bode well for sellers who have questions about their money.

Note: In case you haven't been migrated yet, here's a video with a tip from a seller who was able to get free listings.

Ebay should not be having a person manually approve who gets into Mangled Payments Discussion Boards.  I know some sellers who were not approved for 14 days and that is when the numbers were small, so Ebay obviously does not feel it is important for their members to be able to ask questions immediately upon being transitioned into the MP program.  Once again Ebay only thinks about what they feel is important not what their customers needs are.

Personally I do not understand why it is not automatically opened to anybody who is in Mangled Payments just as the Power Seller Board is automatically opened once a Seller reaches the required parameters.  But Ebay is so concerned with having total control of not only Sellers accounts but now more and more Buyers are complaining in my FB groups because Ebays Search engine is becoming more and more useless as Ebay tries to push buyers to make their purchases from sellers in the Mangled Payments program so they are suddenly not able to find what they are looking for, because the MP Sellers do not have those items or their prices are higher than those not in Mangled Payments.  Once again Ebay is shooting themselves in both feet because they are trying to maximize their take on everything rather than worry about servicing their customers.  More and more now the other sites like ECrater and even Bonanza are starting to be discussed as sites for our categories to start moving to just as they used to push for Ebay back when it first started.

We have our 1st sale in Mangled Payments.

They took their fee's straight from the transaction.

It's a bit confusing looking at the "payments" page but we'll work thru it.

I'M SO EXCITED to be in MP. . . . .(extreme sarcasm)

Once again, eBay rolls out a process that is half baked.

There is no reason why ONE PERSON (!!!!) is responsible for adding people to a discussion board one member at a time!! WHAT??? What kind of an operation is this? And that is in addition to their other responsibilities. Holy crap are you all new? Stupid company has been around 25 years.

I was transitioned on the 4th...I thought it was going to be the evening of the 5th. But I guess in bizzarro world that is the morning of the day of???? I can say that my initial impressions are not great. Money comes in and sits as pending for 2-3 days. No idea when my daily payouts will start. Shipping labels are going okay.

The problem I am having right now; buyer makes a purchase and cancels 1 minute later. Not a big deal. Cancellations happen regularly enough. I approve, select send refund.....wait for it.....PROBLEM PROCESSING CANCELLATION.
Goes on to say:

Refund failed for this cancellation

Hi XXXXX,

We were unable to charge your payment method for the refund of this cancellation. Please add or update your payment instrument and try again.

You may also want to send a message to the buyer to let them know that their refund is delayed.

Are you kidding me? There is over $30k in the linked checking account and a card on file with $20K available. Never mind the cash that is pending disbursement that eBay is sitting on. Somehow all of that can't cover a refund of $14.95!!!

OK, maybe I can change the payment method. Nope. I got the IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S US page after clicking the link.

Now I get to deal with how to fix the issue. Colossal waste of time. My buyer has to wait for their refund. I look bad, and eBay are just idiots. They can take their 1/10th of a penny per transaction savings and shove it!

Honestly, I'd be using a credit card that pays you back in cash each month to place your expenses on for the person that was complaining about the shipping. We place all of our business expenses for what we sell on our cap one cc and pay it every week. This way we make our expenses work for us by getting 2% back.

Our one acct is slated to go to mgmt payments in 2 weeks, but our larger acct they still have not given us a date. This whole thing is so odd with how eBay has handled everything.

I dont know, they busted my hump last month to go in. But still havent heard anything. But at the same time I have about 1/3 of my usual active listing going right now. Maybe thats why. IDK. I let a bunch of good sellers run out to give the others a chance to sell. It works, and I probably have to do it about 3 times a year.
I have good items, some at prices lower than all others that dont sell. Probably because the ai says the other items I have sell well enough. IDK! This seems to work though.

They don’t care about you, they don’t care what you think, they don’t care what your issues are.
They DO care about how much money they take from you. They do care about how many houses they have, cars they drive, boats they own.
You, are the worker ants, and if you get squashed, just like ants, there are so many more that it just doesn’t change anything in their nest.  They will change, they’ll take more of your money any which way they can, all in the name of seller protections.
Good luck all..

Managed Payments = Sales Killer (in certain categories)

8/15 is right around the corner , and the 7/15 sign-ups are still at 30% , with successful sign-ups (and they haven't activated many of that 30%)

They need to take a step back , throw a lengthy  grace period , for people who tried and weren't able , were scared to make the move , decided they wanted to not make the move, etc

I asked my bank people , if i should share my sign-in and password with Ebay, their group  reply was in unison , ''Are you insane''? (i had a feeling they have been asked this before, and this has become their standard reply)

"Managed Payments = Sales Killer (in certain categories)"  Why would it do that?

You do NOT have to give anyone your login and password to your banking information.  That is simply not true.  There are options.

I got switched over to MP's 4 days ago.  Most of my payments are still showing as 'processing', with a small amount as 'available'. No funds have been transferred to my bank account yet. With the funds still 'processing' does that mean they havent cleared yet and the payment can still bounce? Yet we have to post the items straight away.
I am already seeing problems with both my buyer and my seller hat on.
Seller hat - i sell in a category where buyers will purchase multiple items at a time. Yet i am not receiving any notifications of a combined invoice. Just the standard ''your item has sold''...for each item. So 4 months down the track when a buyer is wanting more of what they bought from me but arent adept at using ebay, i have no way of searching my emails to find out what the item was.
Buyer hat - all my purchases from ebay are showing in the paypal notification as being from 'ebay', with the item being 'purchase amount'. Logging onto paypal and nowhere in the transaction does it say who the seller was or what the item was. (Whilst the obvious solution is to just look on ebay, this wont work if, for eg, married couple with separate ebay accounts, but she handles the finances and it all goes through the same paypal account - at the end of the month and she does her books, she will just have a pile of notifications that all say exactly the same thing.)  Which brings you to the next question.......chargebacks. Are we going to see an increase in chargebacks cos buyers dont recognise purchases on their paypal account, being that it doesnt say what those purchases even are or from whom? (And that isnt even touching the fact that when paypal receive a chargeback, the transaction is with ebay not the seller.....so what happens there?).

Managed payments SUCK!

That's all there is to it, it doesn't even come close to being as good as Paypal!

Sold an item on the 7th, we might see the money on the 10th, probably more like the 11th or 12th.

With Paypal we would've seen the money 10 seconds after the sale.

There is NO way I'll ever give this payment system a thumbs up, it's total CRAP!

@Marie --

why would managed payments be a sales killer? people on the whole , do not like change , give the buyers the option, would have been the best way-

the problem is (2 sellers selling the exact same item for comparable prices) if seller A has managed payments when you go to check out , seller b has the standard paypal checkout ....there is no doubt the buyer is going with seller B

and no for the most part , there are no options then signing up (w./ log in and passwords) , sure you can upload documents , and get jerked around and around , and be caught it seems,  in an endless circle

some of the terms customer service reps at Ebay have used about Managed Payments , when conversing with them : "Nightmare" ,  "I'm Ready to quit" , "Why fix something that wasn't broken" , "No Planning on how difficult this would be" , etc

Yes that means they are still processing.  Likely because of the weekend.

No there is no requirement that you have to ship right away.  You just need to do as you always have and ship within your stated handling time.  Some sellers ship right away and some don't.  It is a personal choice.  But if you decide you want to wait until the money is in your bank account, do not forget to change your handling time to 4+ days so you don't end up getting a bunch of late shipment dings and damage the health of your selling account.  There is no right or wrong question here, just do what is best for your business.

Now if you are printing your shipping labels funded by MP, one thing to keep in mind is that while even if you do not have any available money in MP, you can still do this, but as money starts to clear, it will reduce that amount by any of the labels you previously issues when there was no available funds to cover them.  It all works out in the end, but it can be a little confusing if you don't understand this is how they do it.

That you sold the item or items is your notification.  MP does not send out payment notifications like we are use to with PP.  I wish they did, but they don't.  I hope they change that very soon.  But you can see your orders on your Seller Hub under Orders, Awaiting Shipment.

For buyers that need a little historical help, search your orders by buyer ID.  That should bring it up for you to share with them.  Or search the downloadable reports you will be keeping each month so you can reconcile your sales at year end.  Or you can teach them how to use their Purchase History and call up older orders.  There are options on the site to getting this information.  I know we get use to certain things and might forget there are other ways.  I've certainly done that many times myself.

Your issues with PP are not issues of MP.  I can't say I've experienced those problems as you have, but maybe you need to contact PP and find out why.

I doubt that there should be an increase in chargebacks due to MP.  That isn't anything I've heard about anyway from any of the sellers that I know that have been in the program for up to 2 years.

IDK why a buyer would make that choice as their checkout is basically the same.  It isn't more cumbersome for them to pay an MP seller.  So you'd have to give more details in regards to what the problem is.

Do you purchase Ebay branded shipping supplies every quarter from the one seller that is authorized to sell them?  I ask because that seller has been in MP since the beginning.  And there is no difference at checkout.  And if you are a buyer that isn't even aware of MP, there is no reason for them to make such a decision as you describe above.

While you may not have seen options, options exist, actually supplying documents was an option to giving your login info.  I am sorry you had issues with the registration process.  I know many did.  Ebay did have this whole process messed up it would be hard to say anything different as it is / was clearly a problem.

I don't think there is any good defense for the messed up registration process Ebay had.  Some simple communication in the beginning would have significantly helped, but they didn't release some of that info until the process was well in swing.

The most important thing they should have stressed to everyone that would have stopped most of the problems was to make it clear that the Registered name on the Ebay account had to perfectly match the name on the checking account to be attached.  That simple piece of information would have cut out a great deal of the issues experience.

But then there were a lot of sellers that simply did not want to do that and it added to their issues.  They tried to fight it and get Ebay to say it was OK for it to be different, so they spun their wheels for a bit and just added more stress for themselves as Ebay can't do that and it is likely because of the Anti Money Laundering laws.

No it isnt a paypal issue.  Paypal can only put on the notification what ebay provides them. The transaction (from paypal's perspective) is between the buyer and ebay - not the seller, so the seller's details are not included. Likewise because it isnt ebay selling the item to the buyer, the item isnt included. What goes on paypal's notification is the transaction itself - which is ONLY ebay / paypal.
I should note that i am in Australia - but i cant see how it would be any different to the US in this regard.
Have you purchased anything from ebay from a seller using MP?  What does it tell you on your paypal notification and on your paypal account?

I purchased something the other day from a Seller using MP's.
Checkout looked no different to what it normally does, except it had an extra payment option. So there is very little chance that the average buyer even knows whether the seller is switched over or not....... well until they get their paypal notification of payment made that doesnt say who they paid or what it was for.

Yes i am fully aware about shipping time. I have mine set to 1 day shipping (I am in a category that is very competitive and if i dont then my items dont appear on the first page in BM).
And no i dont use ebay labels, so not relevant.
My question was WHY are the payments still showing as 'processing' well after the payment has been made?
Does it mean that the payment can still be reversed?
In a digital age one has to question why it is taking so long for payments to move from 'processing' to 'available'. I dont use the other platforms so i cant compare ebay to them (and i see no reason to even do so - we are talking about ebay, not amazon etc) but i can compare it to paypal, where the funds were available the minute the buyer paid.  So why is this not the case with ebay?
