eBay Is Performing Significantly Better than Expected

By: Ina Steiner

eBay issued a press release stating its business is performing significantly better than the expectations it shared with investors in its April 29th earnings release.

eBay said strength in global gross merchandise volume (GMV) it had seen in April continued through May.

What's remarkable: it now expects GMV growth of between 23% and 26% for the second quarter. That's after years of stagnant growth rates - in fact, in the fourth quarter of 2019, GMV was down 4% fx-neutral. (Does anyone remember the last time eBay had double-digit GMV growth?)

It's interesting eBay didn't mention the surge in online shopping due to the pandemic as contributing to strong sales when it wrote the following:

"All major verticals are accelerating significantly compared to previous quarters, including Home & Garden, Electronics, Fashion, Auto Parts and Collectibles.

"Demand strength is driven by increased organic traffic, better marketing efficiency, and higher platform conversion."

What do you think is behind the strong growth, and are you seeing stronger sales? Take a look at the eBay press release, and let us know - be sure to indicate what types of products you're selling and any other factors you think are relevant.

Of course; Ebay is claiming credit for the fact that half the planet's population is sat indoors buying stuff online - now they finally have some growth figures they dont have to lie about - for the first time in perhaps a decade.

Stock price at $50 although the Fed has been manipulating the market for months.

When pandemic settles down, ebay will follow and go back to being flat or worse.

When Managed Payments comes around, they'll see a drop like no other. My sales have been solid since I started relisting every 28 days. Doubled as a matter of fact before the pandemic even started. (And they said it didn't work........hahahahaha)

July 15th will be the killer. My time to say goodbye. I'm not even the slightest bit sad. Two months away in our trailer will do me a world of good. ๐Ÿ˜€

I guarantee you the only difference to the norm is this: ALL of the GMV gain and ALL of the new buyers were Covid-19 related items which eBay claimed they were banning on March 5th. They did nothing of the sort. They've been swimming in fees collected from price gouging even after their fake ban. This company of frauds needs to be pinned to wall for this. Will any analysts at next earnings have the guts to point this out?

The third quarter is looking to be terrible. If everyone who is threatening to leave when Mangled Payments kicks in, the GMV is going to be double-digit negative growth.

Even a broken clock is right 2x a day.

Plus - every dog has its day and today is ebays day.

eBay didnโ€™t โ€œdo anythingโ€ different this quarter then the did any other - so no reason to crow.

Ebay put no new policies in place, didnโ€™t give sellers any tangible help - it was usual eBay fail

No sales here.  Because I have cancelled all my listings.  How do you sell when carriers are throwing hissy fits over a sneezing fit?

Price gouging was a very small amount of the sales

The majority of sales were common folks who weren't working because of Covid 19, you get bored after a few days and you start buying items on eBay, amazon & walmart. (I myself bought a few items more then I usually do)

I thought for sure my sales would drop that most of my customers repair aircraft. Well I was wrong, these mechanics were buying tools to restock their tool boxes while they weren't working. . .

@ThievesDay

Have you ever considered the fact that management at Ebay does not have the brain power to understand that this rise in sales and profits is only due to the Covid19 ourbreak.  They are probably sitting there slapping themselves on the back in congratulations for turning things around at Ebay so quickly with absolutely no clue that it is only because of the pandemic.  Things will go back to normal in the 3rd quarter and then once again they will be blaming the problems on something the Sellers have done or the Sellers being to stupid to realize what a great deal being in Mangled Payments was and leaving Ebay completely.

Nothing has changed even with the changing of the guard at CEO and the former CFO leaving at the end of this month along with the Chairman of the Board and another one of his cronies.  The sinking ship will continue to take on water as they force more and more Sellers into Mangled Payments in an attempt to control all aspects of each Sellers business.

In keeping in line with all of the former CEO's, I wonder what surprise Ebay will announce and implement in the 4th quarter to once again cause Sellers to have to spend more time online fixing their listings than sourcing product to sell on their website. Of course what Ebay feels is a great idea that has to be implemented immediately so they can see the benefits from it, but new Upper Management will continue the trend of Ebay never keeping their word about anything.

If eBay's sales are so great, why is it that over the past week, I have received a bunch (i.e., one for each of my buying and selling ids) of five percent bonus bucks and ten percent off a single purchase coupons for unrestricted (i.e., unlike the Father's Day promotion which only allows purchases from select sellers) item purchases on the site that are being funded by the venue?

If the site performance is so good and the end of the quarter is weeks away, there should not be a need to artificially boost the sales figures.

Sounds like more game playing and spin to me.

The media tends to print anything that eBay cares to say.

With all those free listings, how much are the sales of $9 and under junk which includes shipping, whether stated or not? Small junk goes 1st Class, which will be $2.80-$4.00 of a $9 total sale.
ebay includes shipping in it's GMV, so the ACTUAL merchandise value is way overstated as a proportion of it's incremental 2nd quarter increase.

GMV =  Gross merchandise value is the total value of merchandise SOLD over a given period of time.

So all those extra listings Ebay has given out for free recently only matters if they actually become a sale.

Speaking for myself, my sales an Ebay and Amazon are way up.  Etsy is stagnate for me and has been for months now.  Bonanza doesn't generate anything.  So I'm not at all surprised that Ebay is showing sales increases for the current period.

Some sellers certainly plan to stop selling on Ebay in mid July because they have been told they are going into MP and they do not want be in the program for whatever reason they have.  Some are making this decision with good factual information and it just isn't right for them.  Others are making their decisions for other reasons.  Either way, their right to make that decision.

Will it be a big enough exit to hurt Ebay?  Highly unlikely.  The buyers will just have a few less sellers to choose from.  Most won't even likely notice.  That may sound a little rough, but that doesn't make it any less true.

I'm very pro eBay most of the time, but when I get this page it really makes my skin boil. . . .I find it hard to say nice things about eBay when they treat me like this!

''...in the fourth quarter of 2019, GMV was down 4% fx-neutral.''

Also '19 Q4 US Marketplace GMV cratered -9%(!๐Ÿ˜ฒ) y/y, of which EBAY blamed 6% of that on IST.

EBAY conveniently forgets to mention the *numerous* EBAY-subsidized sitewide flash sales (and other EBAY-sponsored buyer promos & coupons) eBay ran in Q4 '18.

These EBAY paid buyer promos *significantly* inflated GMV in Q4 of 2018 (and actually *all* of 2018).

Spinning-down these eBay sponsored buyer promotions is simply eBay milking the 'more responsible marketing spend'' soundbite we have been hearing from EBAY for ages.

~~~~~~~~
As to eBay not acknowledging the pandemic, agree with other comments it's par for the course as far as eBay spin is concerned. With a new CEO and Chairman eBay wants to take credit for a turnaround it didn't' really have anything to do with and was simply extremely fortunate (how about the timing of the StubHub sale completion as 100s were laid off while events were cancelled).
The pandemic has been *very* good for EBAY, indeed.
