eBay Controls Messaging about 'Evolving' Managed Payments

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is being tight-lipped about Managed Payments to the point that moderators are unable to answer some specific questions on the eBay discussion boards.

During Wednesday's weekly chat session, sellers raised a couple of issues related to the functionality of eBay's payments program.

"What is going to happen to the coin, currency, and bullion sellers when all sellers are forced into managed payments, when they can't use managed payments for payment," a seller asked. That appeared to be a reference to the fact that eBay is excluding certain categories from Managed Payments, as reported in a recent Letter to the Editor.

An eBay moderator responded, "If you're enrolled or invited to participate in managed payments you're welcome to contact that team directly for any information. The Community Team is unable to provide additional information outside of the resources available already."

The original poster was not satisfied, writing, "Secrets are not acceptable when it is people's listings and lively hood are involved," to which the moderator responded, "I'm not able to discuss managed payments questions outside of what's available."

Another seller raised a different issue - "Realized only this week that MP sellers can now use funds from pending payments to front shipping costs. Is this a permanent "bump-up"?"

The moderator again said he was unable to discuss details of the Managed Payments program not already published, but he wrote, "you can contact Customer Service to speak with our managed payments team directly about this question."

A third seller pointed out, "Having to wait until you're either invited or drafted before getting your questions answered seems a little unusual," and suggested eBay have staff from the Managed Payments team participate in a weekly chat at some point, writing, "That might help to clear the air on several nagging concerns."

The moderator responded, writing, "definitely something we will continue to look into, though due to the evolving nature of this program and varying account specific details related to promotional sign-up periods, it is challenging to address a lot of questions in a public forum that would be applicable to the general public. We'll work on potentially getting something scheduled with the managed payments team and provide updates here if anything gets planned."

Personally I think this makes very good sense.  The Chat team is not always current on the rules, changes and upcoming changes to MP as the team dedicated to the MP are.  This isn't some regular rule change.  MP is a big deal with lots and lots of implications.

It makes perfect sense to me that Ebay would try to get all the information flowing in and out of the dedicated team for a program as large and MP and with all the fast moving parts.  To me it just seems we would get more accurate information this way.

And I think it is great news that MP is now rolling out the ability to pay for Ebay shipping labels through MP.

Marie - and once again I'll disagree with you. To expect people to continue subscribing to stores and selling on Ebay without full disclosure of how Managed Payments will affect their business model in the future is like telling the public that you'll know what's in the ACA once it is passed.

Managed payments may well work for some people's business practices and it won't for others. Those sellers deserve the right to know how this will impact them and whether they need to make other plans for their future.

We've been asking for over a year to get more specifics on Managed Payments. You shouldn't have to be invited or join to find out the specifics of how it will work for you. There is no reason that a team member from Managed Payments can't appear on a weekly chat and answer specific questions on how the program is designed to work and is working at this point. We all know there will be tweeks and changes in the future but you are denying sellers the option to assess for themselves how this will impact their business and if it will be right for them.

Even if access was granted to the Managed Payments discussion board so that sellers could get a glimpse of how others are doing would be an improvement.

I do not blindly walk into a situation without knowing how it benefits me or how it will affect my life. I find it funny that there are some sellers not enrolled in Managed Payments who will defend it as obviously - these sellers must also have their doubts. They are not willing to jump in with both feet but expect others to.

@Marie

I understand Ebay not wanting to give out incorrect information regarding Mangled Payments, but they should not have a folder dedicated to MP and then only allow those that are currently enrolled in it to see that folder.  That is a big reason that Ebay keeps getting asked so many questions about their program as it will be a major change for many Sellers, myself included.  But even after you are forced into the program as one friend of mine was, then you have to ask permission to see and post to that board.  It took this person approximately 10 days to gain access to that folder and the information in it, including any problems or issues that Ebay is already having with the program.  When  a person is told that their livelihood it going to be changed big time in the near future and yet Ebay cannot or will not share enough information for anybody to make an informed decision about it is just wrong in so many ways.

I understand that Ebay plans on MP being a big money maker for them which always means Sellers will wind up getting thrown under the proverbial bus.  There are many questions that Sellers need information about but I am sure that Ebay realizes that this new program is nothing more than another money grab so they do not want to give users a chance make backup plans in case MP does not work out for them.  I know i have asked several times if Ebay has any plans at all about offering a plan for sellers whose average sale is under $12 and currently use Paypal Micropayments accounts which have a higher discount rate but the transaction fee is only $0.05 while normal accounts are 2.96% and $0.30.and they have been completely crickets on that.  So the lack of information as well as their most recent change to charging $0.25 per line item on an invoice pretty much shows they have no intentions of trying to keep a lot of sellers, especially in my category.  But this lack of information from Ebay could go a long way in pushing a lot of business away from Ebay even before they have their project completed.

As usual Ebay is showing their normal lack of transparency so they can just suddenly drop the bomb on Sellers that they are now in MP and they have no other choices.  A lot of my category has already been changing over to FB private groups that are only interested in the items I happen to sell.  Many of these groups have 16000+ members who are only interested only in what you are selling, and to top it off, there is no listing fee nor FVF on any products or shipping costs.

I do not understand why Ebay is having such a hard time “getting the bugs out” of MP. Etsy implemented a “canned” package from same supplier (Ayden). Payouts, paying for shipping, combined orders with one 25¢ charge, issuing refunds have worked flawlessly for me. Seems like a lot of Ebay resources are being used to reinvent the wheel.

@Marie ..   I  LOVE  the fact that you are SOOOO often on top of the news and details, but on Managed Payments you seem to be blissfully unaware that less than a month ago it "slipped out" that FEWER than 20,000 eBay accounts are currently in Managed Payments.

Let that sink in. " 20,000 accounts" doesn't even REALLY MEAN that there are 20,000 SELLERS.  Ebay is so "Pro-Active" at ANNOYING sellers and essentially DRIVING THEM AWAY that I'll wager that MANY of those 20,000 accounts are now moribund OR that the sellers enticed or PRESS-GANGED into Managed Payments are either NOT SELLING or have manoeuvered around to Open some NEW account that is NOT under the thumb of Managed Payments.
20,000 is a PITIFULLY SMALL sample to use to judge such a Monumental Shift in eBay functionality.
Making ALL such accounts have to WAIT DAYS to receive their funds and Charging a FLAT $0.25 PER LINE ITEM are TWO Glaring Problems with this Wrong-Headed system.
All the above PLUS secrecy as to what even the NOW-CURRENT "rules of the road" are let alone any PROPOSED changes lead me to the inescapable conclusion that Managed Payments is already a Massive TrainWreck and Fixin' to get 'Way Worse.
Fasten Your Seatbelts.  It's Gonna Be A Bumpy Ride.

Reason Greedbay is keeping eveything a secret is that they haven't decided what the answer is themselves. Everything changes so fast they can't keep up with the latest lie.

It was Jordan Sweetnam who said now that he's returned to ebay after a 3 year stint at Walmart, communication was going to be a big priority and that sellers can expect more transparency.

But then, he met with the Borg cube on the top floor. He got there, maybe wanted to communicate for a minute at least. Alas, the Borg queen assimilated him into the collective where he is today. A drone without mind, without purpose, without individuality.

10 bucks says next time we hear from him, there will be at least 10 buzz babble words which will continue until he is fired and replaced with another drone.

Gold and bullion sellers on eBay?!?!?!? Don't customers just buy and hold for 5 months and if the price of gold drops just open paypal "item not as described case". Seems like a risk free investment opportunity.

"Personally I think this makes very good sense."

My calendar says 2/17, not 4/1

eBay "doesnt know"?, eBay management "doesnt know"? eBay did know this when they "found" Adyen? eBay cant tell you because ?

If they dont know - then say "we werent told, we dont know". CANT and DONT are 2 different words in the english language.

You make a few million a yer and you AGAIN, dont know how the business works? OBVIOUSLY Crapyen feels that those categories are too high risk to deal with - but didnt eBay brass know this when they signed the contract ?Crapyen didnt tell them???

How many times will people believe that eBay is on the level?

They just lie over and over and the avoidance of pressing issues speaks volumes.

''We'll work on potentially getting something scheduled with the managed payments team and provide updates here if anything gets planned''

So, the usual just p**s off and leave us alone whilst we carry on lying to you, ripping you off and conjurning up some more money-grabs from the items you pay to list that we don't bother showing on our site unless you pay 'promoted listings' - come to think of it, that's a good idea - 'Prime Promoted Listings' - for an additional fee on top of the listing fee and Promoted Listing Fee, sellers can access our Promoted Listings Plus plan...

Darned pesky 'Noise' - sellers might be our main source of income but they sure are a nuisance, expecting to be treated honestly and like 'customers' seem to do these days.

The sooner we get rid of all the ''Noise' the better...hang on a minute, we seem to be doing that already...which might be why are sales and GMV was down in the busiest Quarter of the year.

If they'll let me print shipping labels right away I'll give MP a try.

eBay is still working for me!

Didn't sell a single item on all 3 accounts yesterday :-(

Then early to day we get 4 orders for $194 :-)

tool - have at it! Call them up and join MP and then you can co me back here and tell us how it works and if sales increase or not. From the few sellers in FB groups that are in MP - only a couple are satisfied - the rest have horror stories

Ebay may be able to keep sellers in the dark on it's own site - but it's the 21st century and most sellers are using alternate sites like FB, Twitter, Instagram ect to discuss the problems that everyone knows exist. The cheerleaders on Ebay would be beaten down in any of these other groups if they tried to make excuses or defend Ebay  Their mantra of only people with problems come here - most sellers don't have any means they don't use social media and have blinders on - as do Ebay management it seems.

@lancecorp

What?  "...without full disclosure of how Managed Payments will affect their business model in the future...".  Where did Ebay state that they weren't going to do this?  Certainly not on the Weekly Chat.  There is a MP team and that is where Ebay wants all the questions and answers to come from.  So while you won't get answers on the Weekly Chat, that doesn't mean you can't get answers.

The MP team has a dedicated phone number in which any of us can call and ask whatever it is you need to ask.

I do agree completely that Ebay could and should do a better job communicating to all of us about the program and not just send these informational emails out to just those that are currently enrolled in MP. No argument here.

I also agree that we should all have access to the Managed Payments threads on the community.

It did NOT "slip out" that there were 20,000 members in MP, Ebay said their were 20,000 members in MP.  Ebay is still under contract with PP and can not have more than a certain percentage of sales being handle by any other method other than PP.

@FeelingFroggy "Reason Greedbay is keeping eveything a secret is that they haven't decided what the answer is themselves."

I have a feeling you are 100% correct. But I think there must be some problems with it that they are not divulging. Or it may be as simple as finding more way's to shove some things in there that will nickle and dime sellers.

As far as the release of a partial payment for shipping funds, I think they have to do that, know it and will do it. I dont think they cant, it will most likely discourage the average Joe from selling things.

I dont know much, but I do know those folks over there at ebay are real confused!

Funny I sell on other sites and theres no MP team to get answers from - why on ebay?

Why is everything so hard? why are OTHER TEAMS needed? Why cant it just be straight forward? Why cant the oh holy and mighty MP TEAM just tell EVERYONE (including the loosers who run eBays weekly chats) what the right info is?

You cant tell me that they dont know what the answers are - SURELY this was though through BEFORE they on CRAPYEN as a partner.

"Hey we take APPLEPAY" - yey so what .... thats NOT what are asking.

Marie - you are wrong - people have asked who to contact to discuss Managed Payments multiple times on the Ebay board - on eBay's Facebook and Twitter boards and the answer has always been that when you ENROLL - they will be more than happy to answer your questions.

If they were being open and transparent - there would be no need for all these questions that the blues can't answer. There should and would be a dedicated Managed Payments board where questions can be posted and answered.

Please post the Managed Payments phone number because there are hundreds of people in groups I belong to that would love to give them a call for details before enrolling.
