eBay Erroneously Blames Banks as Sellers Wait for Funds

By: Ina Steiner

eBay failed to disburse sellers' funds today but blamed banks, according to reports from sellers. "Lots of sellers did not get their scheduled payouts yesterday," one reader told us. "I was one of them. They claimed it was my bank declining it. Payout from Etsy came through just fine."

In the past, sellers would receive immediate payment directly from buyers into their PayPal accounts. Under Managed Payments, eBay collects payments and disburses them to sellers, which adds a delay in getting paid.

When scheduled payouts don't come through, that adds a cash-flow burden that sellers of any size can least afford, and in the holiday period, can be especially difficult.

Sellers discussed this week's disbursement delays on the eBay discussion boards, including in this thread. One seller explained:

"For the past 3 months I have been receiving daily payouts with no issues. This morning I receive a e-mail from eBay saying that they could not send my payout and may be a problem with my bank. eBay, there is no problem with my bank and as usual the problem is on your end. I have been waiting for this to happen because everything eBay trys is a disaster. I had PayPal for years and never had any issues receiving my money. Typical eBay. I am so tired of this nonsense!!"

Another seller said it didn't inspire confidence for eBay to blame sellers' banks before making sure it wasn't a problem on its end. "Obviously it is widespread, so they should know that many sellers banks couldn't have suddenly exploded overnight."

Compounding matters was the fact sellers were unable to reach customer support. "Same here.  And they aren't taking ANY calls... The recording told me to "call back during business hours" but they are open right NOW."

It seems certain that eBay wasted many sellers' time by having them check with their bank or try contacting eBay instead of acknowledging it was a problem on its end.

Sellers are also indicating on Ecommerce EKG if they are experiencing the issue or not.

I have 2 IDs on daily payouts. One shows as declined waiting to retry @ 00.21 pst, the other shows processing preparing to send @ 00.17 pst.

Thank god my other IDs have weekly payouts and got those ok yesterday.

ebay can't honestly expect us to believe that hundreds (maybe thousands) of sellers banks ALL had issues on the same day? This is an ebay MP problem.

When Mark Tritton took over as CEO of struggling retailer Bed Bath and Beyond he took decisive measures and ousted half a dozen legacy C-level execs mere weeks on the job.

We often hoped the next eBay CEO would take similar decisive measures to right eBay's ship, starting with clearing-out Wenig/Donahoe legacy execs.

It appears what we actually have in Iannone is a guy who doesn't want to rock the boat much and delegates (abdicates?) an awful lot so he can mostly remain a behind-the-scenes guy similarly to how he found some success at Walmart.

Julie Loeger's appointment hopefully suggests an exit for eBay's Wendy Jones (who oversees eBay's customer service and eBay's Global Security and Resiliency organizations, reportedly including the crayon-chewing former security employees often in the news these days), and I think it's fair to question if Alyssa Cutright may have hit a glass ceiling with responsibility over eBay payments (recall when Wenig shuffled former CTO Steve Fisher around, briefly in charge of payments when Cutright was already there).

Both Customer Service, Security, and Payments are clearly dysfunctional orgs in need of a complete revamp (like much of eBay, *including* tech) if there's ever to be any substance to Iannone's ''Tech-led reimagination'' and ''partner of choice'' nonsense.

No matter, the fact that eBay blamed this on banks instead of taking ownership of the issue speaks volumes about how far eBay has yet to go before it can hope to measure up to anything close to ''business with integrity drives our success''.

Ebay had 5 years to plan for this and did absolutely nothing.  Then they realized that it was time to get to work but as usual Ebay will not spend the money on those that do the work but only on the execs who sit in Walkers West discussing what needs to get done to screw over the sellers next while sipping on the top shelf Scotch and Bourbon.  I had hoped that this new CEO might bring some of the old Ebay knowledge and experience back to the company but alas the only reason he got hired was that he would do nothing to right the ship and get rid of all of those money wasting execs who do nothing but give poor direction to the lackeys that they hire to try and do the work.

Ebay needs to clean house and then start hiring some new experienced executives who then have the power to hire top notch staff to start fixing things.  Until this is done Ebay is going to continue to do nothing but flounder and watch their stock price sit around $50-$60 while all the other companies skyrocket.  I still cannot believe that Etsys stock price is triple the price of Ebays and most of this increase has occurred during the last 6 months while Ebay has done absolutely nothing during this pandemic.  Ebay BOD got what they wanted, another do nothing while allowing the cheats and thieves to keep their jobs and power.  They realized that to many people are starting to realize that they are just like the mafia so they brought in new talent at the top, but Iannone obviously has zero power or influence over how or what is done.

DOJ's next investigation is going to be Mangled Payments and this time the top level Executives are going to be going to Federal Prison for a long time when they finish their investigation.

In over 18 years, I have never had ONE problem with Paypal with respect to receiving payments.

Forced into Managed Payments less than 4 months ago, this happens. Not the least bit surprising. It is bad enough that it takes 5 days from item sale to receiving my funds to not have to worry about these things happening. It was obvious to me in that moment it is not a problem with my bank. I have been with Chase for 10 years and have never had one problem with them either.

Problems always start and end with eBay. I am sure the banks really appreciate the extra work from eBay sellers calling them about this screw up.

Also, how is it that a company as large as eBay, whose business functions 24/7, isn't available to answer calls for a problem like this. I KNOW somebody is working there, because the stupid service reps have issued refunds in error during the wee hours of the night.

How many people have been shoved into MP? Maybe half a million? Heaven help us all when MP goes all out. The self proclaimed "greatest tech company" still isn't ready for prime time.

There was an issue that affected payouts for a number of managed payments sellers on December 2nd, 2020. This issue has been resolved and all affected payouts were re-sent on December 2nd. There is no action for you to take at this time. Depending on your bank, your payouts should be reflected in your bank account in the next 1-4 business days.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

As always, thanks for selling at eBay.

Of course there is no mention of all the lost time and effort put forth by those Sellers who were effected and were once again lied to by Ebay!!!  Surprisingly Ebay finally admitted there was a problem but never apologies to those who wasted all of their time trying to follow up on the LIE which was told to them by somebody who once again had no idea what they were talking about.

Iannone needs to start cleaning house of all the inept employees who continue to drain their salaries from Ebay while doing nothing but further alienating their true customers who pay their bills, the Sellers!!!!!!!!!  But as usual he will remain silent on the issue while following the footsteps of his predecessor by sitting in Walkers West sipping on his drink and having another good laugh at the Sellers Expense.

“ eBay Shows Focus on Payments with Hiring of New Chief Officer”

And within 48 hours......

eBay’s ‘revenue’ (read float), sets a record. All it really took was to let the FNG push a few buttons. The lies, hypocrisy and thievery they already got covered.

And you know what comes after the wash, right? Spin cycle. If you listen closely, you can hear their thesaurus pages turning.

Why would anyone expect eBay to admit ownership of this epic fail???

Just another very public eBay SNAFU ...... situation normal all f***ed up.

I am one of the thousands who did not receive their payout even though I received the Payout Sent massage from eBay.  Followed shortly by the We Ran Into A Problem.

What a joke!  I've had the same bank with the same account number for 41 years.  I've been in managed payments for 1 1/2 years.  NO eBay you bozo idiots, there is nothing wrong with my bank account.

Unfortunately this is not the first report of FAILED payouts.  Others have been reported on the special MP board.

So, will eBay be refunding all of our fees for the month of December and giving us a month free store rent to make up for the heart attacks and stress sellers experienced?

I know those eBay executive still read this blog daily. So you ask all of you idiots, why is it standard operating procedure at eBay to lie to the customers, the sellers? You only had 5 YEARS!!!!! to work on Mangled Payments and you still have daily problems. With the entire IT team making $2 a day, you get what you pay for.

Bet the profits from the float on those intentionally withheld payments looks nice on the holiday season bottom line and helps execs claim a successful season despite lackluster growth.

There was probably a payment due on something - and eBay needed the cash to cover it - probably the Xmas party/bonus's that need tp be given out - to protect the eBay secrets "of where the bodies are buried".

SIK said it perfectly as did Snapped .... but while they tend to believe theres a "fix" comming (maybe ... I dont want to put words in their mouths) - like the OTHER topic (that Im getting flack on by a certain someone) .... there wont EVER be a fix - not to any of these issues.

Why should there be - whos going to make them stop the thievery ?

Chase (and others) can have money transfered same day if not immediately - why cant Adyen/eBay? why should it take 3-5 days?

Any sale that has shipped with tracking (apologies to those who use postage stamps) should have their funds in 24hrs!

Why not? ebay wants ITS money right away - why are sellers second class citizens?

It wont change though - and eBay learned from the "charging FVF on shipping" incident way back when - there was some small backlash and then life went on.

Even a few here said "its fair cause otherwise the items would be $1 and the shipping $99" ... Well pardon ME for eBays coming up with a crappy payment idea. They could just charge normal store fees and be done with it. BUT, stealing from helpless sellers is easier and cleaner.

Its always everyone ELSES fault except eBay - and like always - no one REALLY believes it.

Everything in the post certainly was true for me.

Blaming my bank.

Saying a payout was declined by my bank when eBay never sent it.

eBay totally unavailable for phone support.

What will happen tomorrow?

Probably the delay was to make more interest off of the mangled payments float that were due to the sellers. This is another ebay joke to steal more money. It seems that the fees are getting higher now to ebay with no direct recourse. Example is that one item of mine sold for $80 plus $36 for Int'l Priority shipping, so total was $116. Ebay quoted the buyer only $36 for shipping. Yet ebay says the total I am due after their fees was $98. But after the payment was processed, ebay was to send me $87 for that one sale. So now it has cost me $29 in ebay fees, and It still cost me $36 in postage to ship the item to Germany. ebay is making more in fees now that ever before. And I am still waiting for the funds to be in my bank account from my sales only to hear that it is my bank's fault. It would not surprise me if the Federal Boys slapped ebay for mis handling of funds.

I understand that every eCommerce platform has technical issues at some point. It’s unavoidable. In this case what is unacceptable is for eBay to send those messages to sellers in the early morning regarding the sellers bank having an issue then waiting until the late afternoon to send a correction acknowledging that it was their issue. Someone knew it was their issue shortly after all of those messages were sent in the morning but they waited nearly 8 hours to admit the error. Meanwhile, thousands of sellers are on the phone with their banks tying up time on both ends of the phone for 20, 30, 40 minutes at a time trying to figure it out. UNACCEPTABLE!!

I'm wondering if there is a cash flow problem of some kind - my payout this morning was $20.00 short of what it should have been - I know that's not much but if you times it by thousands of sellers, it will add up quickly. Wondering if others were shorted.
