eBay Hires Category Managers to Beef up Inventory

eBay is hiring category managers to recruit sellers in the UK to help beef up its selection of inventory, even as the company shuffles executives at corporate headquarters in San Jose, which you can read about in Friday's blog post.

An eBay manager posting on a career-networking site said eBay UK was hiring a "lot" of new category managers in the UK and pointed to a post on eBay's London jobs site.

Category managers might typically be seen as specialized support staff to help eBay sellers succeed, but from the job description, it appears they'll be focused on recruiting efforts to attract sellers - and sellers' offerings.

Under a section called, "The Opportunity," eBay UK explains contracted category managers will "define the category strategy and execute this through working with strategically important sellers, brands and retailers in your areas to ensure that eBay has the inventory to continue to grow this area."

And it continues, "As a Category Manager in the trading team, you will be accountable for both the operational and commercial success of the brand and retailer portfolio and the wider category."

Some of the key responsibilities of the job include the following:

- Lead and develop the relationship with key sellers, brands and retailers within the portfolio and in line with the category strategy

- Build range plans, target merchandise and use levers to get products on site to drive performance

- Build category and market expertise to identify and exploit opportunities for eBay

- Develop an excellent understanding of sellers' business operations and current strategies and utilise insight to find opportunities for growth

Job requirements include a "strong background of driving commercial results through business development and acquisition" along with the ability to "build partnerships and work in collaboration with others to meet shared objectives," as well as being "comfortable to engage at the most senior levels within brands and retailers."

Another requirement: "Background in the retail industry, ideally ecommerce." But oddly, eBay doesn't disclose the categories for which it's hiring - could managers with different category backgrounds be seen as interchangeable?

Interestingly, the positions are for contract workers on a 1-year term. You can find the full posting on this page of the eBay corporate website.

eBay has no inventory. Never have, never will. They can't increase buyers and GMV is in decline. So they only want sellers and listings in which they churn fees from by schemes and tricks, and advertising click money. eBay does not care about sales. The site is already overloaded with too many sellers but eBay wants more so they can steal money from them. That's all everything is about with this company. Keep devising more schemes in which they can get money while the marketplace and company deteriorates. Blood suckers.

"Build category and market expertise to identify and exploit opportunities for eBay"

Its funny how the word "exploit" can have very different meanings in a positive and negative way. Now because it's eBay using the term, to me it comes across as extremely negative.

"use levers to get products on site to drive performance"

Again the word "levers". A fairly innocent verb? (pardon possible grammar faux pas). It comes across as a negative. Drive performance. Good grief I'm going crazy with these idiots.

One more thing
"Background in the retail industry, ideally ecommerce"

Ideally???? Ideally?????? What the heck. Primarily maybe, or better Background in the eCommerce Industry.

Can they not freaking do a simple job posting?

Those "jobs" (button men) wouldnt be needed if eBay would stop stealing from its sellers!

eBay will spend UNTOLD amounts of money putting the screws on its sellers - then turns around and complains. Well of course ! How long do you expect sellers to stay, put up expensive inventory with no guarantee that they wont get defrauded, devote their time effort and money - when eBay wont stand behind them.

Take the money from the last few acquisitions - if it was spent UPGRADING "top sellers" items from FCM or media mail to PM mail - it would have gone alot farther (it would be Amazon prime level service) ... and eBay wouldnt be in the position its it. But its always easier to go the more painful route - because eBay somehow sadistically enjoys warring with its sellers instead. If they did the mail upgrade - there would be no late shipments, no defects, less calls to CS (time& money), more sellers with better feedbacks, and SELLERS could spend more time sourcing goods... but NO.

There are ALOT of good ideas - places where money would actually work for you (eBay), but eBay is determined to continue doing it backwards .... ok - so go hire more dopes and get the same or worse results (ala Griff, Jordan etc)

So eBay NEEDS OUR INVENTORY ??

They really don't need our inventory, because we end more listings than we create due to Wenig's and Temkin's automated fee generation script that fee churns unsold inventory and listings automatically.

If the moronic eBay executives really NEEDED OUR INVENTORY, they would put an end to charging for listings, put an end to the silly concept of eBay store subscriptions and would give all sellers in good standing unlimited free listings with no selling limits.

eBay does not want inventory, if they did all they would have to do is change all their horrible rip off policies and exorbitant selling fees and institute all the above.

If they need more inventory, all they have to do is go back to 100 free listings or end the forced 30-day relists.  I have plenty of stuff left to sell but don't even use the listing promotions anymore because of the fee churn.

They could also lower fees so that I'd be able to price at a level their impoverished customer base might br able to afford.  But we all know that'll never happen because something something industry standard.

Waste of time. First who would take a position where they are very likely guaranteed to fail?

You can have the most sincere Category Manger on the planet selling your services. Meaningless if eBay can't keep the site running and stop the games with visibility issues. I think getting started on eBay today is too hard. Not really worth the hassle. There are plenty of established sellers who are scaling down their eBay businesses for those same reasons. Until eBay can identify and address those hurdles, bringing on new merchandise and sellers is futile.

Most people have heard of eBay. They have opinions good or bad. Many are bad. Hence negative GMV in a space where double digit growth is taking place.

Based on comments I have read on various sites, it seems eBay's reputation in the UK may be worse than here in the USA.

I Must be Crazy, suffering loss of sellers and reputation is the consequence for employing shortsighted White Collar Criminal Executives who are willing to steal money using automated scripts so they can cash in stock options.

Wenig the fraud who was fired and Schenkel the crook who replaced him have never addressed the Good Til Canceled fraud they are engaged in, nor will they ever comment on it.

Only in the UK? did they run out of victims - opps I mean sellers in the USA to dupe?

More inventory? How about spending some of those billions from the sale of Stub and buy more data so you could actually show the listing you already have instead of stepping on the throats of the people who actually built the site and show ALL listings? Ebay STOP hiding our listings - just found 2 of mine today that are nowhere to be found.  I only have a premium store - can't even imagine how many you would hide if I had an anchor store.  One of the ones I was checking on today I've sold 7 recently. Ebay show my listings - I thought you were all about the money dudes - how about let's make some together?  Anyone who hasn't already established your own website - your nuts.

Seems Ebay is doing exaclty what I told them they would do years ago.

Left Ebay years ago after they decided to hide my listings (top rated seller, 99,99% feedback) and put my biggest competitor on top of best match with 80% if his listings.

The day I quit Ebay and I phoned CS this is exactly one of the things I said them. There will come a time where you will start to call people like me that used to sell on Ebay, to plee them to come back because there won't we a seller left.

Problem is: I WILL NEVER EVER TRUST EBAY AGAIN. No matter what they do.

Category managers? What a deceptive title, which comes as no surprise from a highly deceptive company.

@CanBrit, sorry, English major here who can't help herself. LOL Levers is a noun (person, place or thing). A verb denotes an action. =)

Reading through the eBayspeak ....

"working with strategically important sellers, brands and retailers in your areas "

" strategically important sellers" are NOT small standard sellers - those are the self styled distributors who have lots of closeouts and rb goods

"brands" are just as it states - its NOT smaller sellers (again) - its small makers of goods that sell direct or on Amazon (and it may even mean artisans)(its eBayspeak so one never knows)

"retailers" - AGAIN, not smaller sellers - these are retailers "on the High street" who have cool good items to sell. I guess you go into their shop, tell them how GREAT selling on eBay is (ie sell them a bill of goods!)(dont worry - we have SELLER PROTECTION)(someone wake up Griff - he may be needed) and convince them to post those items on eBay

I woudnt want that job (going after any of these types of accounts) only cause I know that eBay lies (always) and that lieing to people in the face - isnt a trait I was brought up with.

eBay has to go this route, since smaller sellers are all to knowledgeable about how eBay REALLY works (just ask that guy who posted in ecommercebytes Facebook page about his expensive sneakers getting stolen by an eBay buyer. eBay told him STFU - have a nice life and hes SPITTING mad.

I have so many ambiguous job postings like this. I would be surprised if anyone replied simply because who can tell what they would really be doing. I remember the days that I had to do job hunting and I would see ads like this in the paper. They always made it sounds like it was just out of my reach. But I remember one time, I took a leap and 'applied'. Turned out they were looking for door to door vacuum cleaner sales people. NO way in the world could you have figured that out from the actual listing.

eBay can't find its way out of a paper bag. They don't need to hire these people. What they need is to go back to the distant past when it was fun and exciting to sell and buy on eBay. Do they even do auctions anymore? I haven't heard of anyone getting a screaming deal in a long time.
