What Would You Ask eBay at Wednesday Q2 Call?

By: Ina Steiner

A reader asked, "Are you thinking of doing another 'With eBay facing Wall Street analysts next week during its second-quarter earnings call, what questions would you ask eBay if you had the chance?' post?"

eBay is announcing its earnings call for the second quarter (April, May, June) on Wednesday, July 17, when it will again field questions from Wall Street analysts.

We would absolutely like to hear what sellers would ask eBay if they had the chance.

You can visit the blog post to see what issues were on sellers' minds this time last year, including sales tax collection; sitewide Flash Sales eBay; returns; glitches; and eBay's involvement in China imports. What's on your mind this year?

''What questions would you ask if you had the chance?''

Let's start with this:

1) ''Devin, how do explain to your other sellers why eBay apparently 'sanitized' tens of thousands of negative feedback for Reebok/Adidas?''

2) ''Scott, how does eBay account for marketplace buyer growth, revenue, and GMV for situations like the recent Reebok fiasco where it appears tens of thousands of buyers may have made tens of millions of dollar-value purchases that were refunded in early July after the end of Q2?''
Why did it take weeks for many of these buyers to get refunded in July when purchases were made in June?

3) What exactly happened with Hasbro?

4) What exactly happened with Reebok?

5) ''Devin, on that note could you provide some updated clarity on precisely what GMV does (and does not) constitute?

You state in the financials that, ''GMV consists of the total value of all successfully closed transactions between users on our Marketplace or StubHub platforms during the applicable period, regardless of whether the buyer and seller actually consummated the transaction.'' But that doesn't really help define what else GMV does or doesn't include.

For example, could you please clarify the following:

• Are seller shipping fees (still) excluded from reported GMV as they were back in 2011 or has eBay now rolled these into GMV?

• If an item is marked-down, has strike-through discounts, or included in another type of eBay promotion discount, is the original list item cost, or the discounted cost rolled into GMV tally?

• If an item is successively reduced in price, is the he highest price a given listing is ever listed at captured as GMV, or the value it actually sold at after being reduced in price?

• Same for Best Offers, is the original listing price or the accepted best-offer captured as GMV?

• Orders that are immediately cancelled after the sale then relisted? It does appear this example is clearly 'double counted' once it is ''sold'' again per your disclosure?

• Unpaid items? Again, pretty sure this one eBay actually discloses in their statement about ''closed/consummated'' but we'd just like to confirm?

• Transaction-wise, just to be clear, exactly where in the order-to-cash process exactly does eBay define 'closed' and 'consummated'?''

4) ''Devin, we've noticed you've received a lot of attention on Twitter from an account called ''unsuckEBAY'', and we're told that your former comms chief Daniel Tarman allegedly 'started the altercation' after the twitter user made some snarky but otherwise harmless remarks after Tarmans unfortunate Holmes Report interview (here 👉 here http://bit.ly/2lcZB1n).

Is there a reason eBay, and you in particular, are so sensitive to feedback from buyers, and shareholder seller-merchants?''

6) ''Devin, how do you explain why Walker's West stays open after you've laid of hundreds? It seems like very poor optics?''

(looks down at notes) ''We'll have a few more later, thanks for taking our questions''

Too bad the BOD of directors can't read - that's a pretty good list - I'm quite sure most of them consider Ina just a trouble maker hosting disgruntled sellers but far from that.  When I speak to c/s and ask them something in regards to an announcement here they rarely know of ECB - I tell them to sign up so when the sellers call in the actually know what's happening. Lemmings - all of them

The Q2 call will be another eBay whitewash of whats happening on the platform.

Read any interview - they are as deep as a rain puddle on a sunny afternoon.

Because eBay has been recreated as a money grubbing advertising platform and NOT an ecommerce platform, the BOD and shareholders get perks and the shyster lawyers who run the place cover it all up "in the TOS". "You agreed to it when you signed on, you KNEW your listings would never get seen unless you paid more, you knew you were surrendering your rights as a merchant when you agreed to sell on our platform" etc.

DW & crew are never forced to answer ANY tough questions, ever.

I "expect" eBay to be snarky, I expect eBay to be devious, I expect eBay to be criminal/borderline criminal/rude/nasty etc - thats the corporate culture that they have created since 2008.

Once in a blue moon eBay shows up at a trade show. Lord have mercy on you if you as them a question thats not scripted or challenges them. They are just scum, period.

Thats not to say that EVERY employee is like that - just most, created by the corporate culture of "while we know nothing, we know better".

Theres only ONE question that counts for me (since I know that GOOD questions like the ones listed above will never get answered unless its in a court room).

Mr Wenig, besides increased advertising, and sponsored listings on your platform, can you please outline for us in a half dozen steps what you plan on doing to grow eBays core business - ecommerce ?

While it angers me that they sit and drink at a bar created with stolen sellers money, they pay shyster lawyers to use the TOS as a weapon against their own sellers and a HOST of many other things - those things wont get resolved at the Q2 question/answer period - what WILL get answered is where the platform is going - or at least it should be.

Alexa, why is DW such a moron? thats really about it.

Devin, I could care less about GMV or your bar Walker's West

Devin, what I want to know is will I have access to my funds Immediately so I can pay postage?

Or will I have to pay postage out of my own pocket while waiting for eBay to deposit my funds into my bank account?

GMV and Walker's West have no impact on my daily life, but access to my funds do!

Does ebay have enough server capacity to show ALL listings 24/7?
If not, why not?
If so, why aren't all listings shown 24/7?

China is flooding the Toys and Video Game market with counterfeit goods. Your company states that it is against policy, but its growing more and more and nothing is being done. Chinese counterfeit product dilutes trust in the those markets and taints ebays brand. What are you going to do to fix this?

Possible suggestion. Push chinese goods to an affiliate site and police them there.

Earnings call interviewer(s):

Mr. Wenig, unlike seemingly everyone else that have asked questions at earnings calls, where no hard questions were asked, we have actually done some due diligence and found numerous problems your customers have had with eBay since you became CEO. The evidence is all over your eBay Community board as well as other ecommerce site comments sections. Please answer the following:

1) Mr. Wenig, why do customers have so many problems with your site including checkout issues? From what we see, it happens on a daily basis. If I'm correct, last year you claimed to be "pissed off" about technical issues. But it continues to get worse and has become a big problem. What are you doing about it?

2) Mr. Wenig, we've seen a significant number of users having problems with Search on the site. Sometimes thousands of results that don't contain even one word from the user's search. Sometimes zero results when there should be many. Adding to that, there are many accusations of eBay unfairly controlling item placement with Best Match or if the items are available to be seen at all. Why are all available items not shown at all times? And would you say eBay does or does not control who gets sales and when?

3) Mr. Wenig, there seems to be thousands of complaints from sellers about their sales deteriorating. From what we can see, most of the problems seem to be resulting of changes by eBay at no fault of the seller. They complain of far less traffic with less page views, many saying sales down 50% and even much more in the last year alone. What do you have to say about this and what are you doing about declining sales?

4) Mr. Wenig, we also notice seller complaints about declining profits selling on eBay with item costs being driven down, with increasing fees and many other suggestions coming from eBay itself that add many layers of other fees. Things such as buying a store or cajoling sellers to use Promoted Listings. We see many complaints that nothing a seller tries helps them and they're just giving eBay more money in fees without an increase of sales. Would you say there's really any benefit to a seller using add-on programs which result in more fees?

5) Mr. Wenig, many sellers seem to think that eBay is working against their success and that your company's only interest is to use the seller and their items for your own profit without regard to actual sales. Things like 3rd party advertising on most item pages. Things like the Good Til Cancelled mandate which results in automatic relisting fees after 30 days. That seems deceptive and isn't really Good Til Cancelled? Is it? What would you say about these things?

6) Mr. Wenig, there are many that use such words as the following about eBay: deceptive, untrustworthy, scheming, controlling, tricks, liars, et al. They claim every change, every policy, always leads to money for eBay but of no benefit to the user. They also claim many of the changes go without notice while the Terms of Use/Service are altered behind the scenes. What would you say to those who claim eBay tries to deceive it's users on purpose for profit?

7) Mr. Wenig, eBay's GMV has declined the last 4 quarters YOY in a row but revenue has been up very slightly. Considering this fact and previous questions and concerns, how long do you think eBay can continue in the same direction without losing customers? We see this direction as short-term and not conducive to long-term growth. Taking more and more from customers with no benefit to them will result in decline. Also, how will eBay show better growth than it has to be more in line with competitors?

8) Mr. Wenig, we have to ask, what is the use of your crusade comparing eBay to Amazon? Their online market share is ~47% while eBay's is ~6%. Amazon continues to gain market share while eBay declines. We think you should be more worried about resolving eBay's site/marketplace issues, increasing buyers, increasing sales, and regaining customer confidence instead of feuding with Amazon. What do you have to say about this?

Thank you Mr. Wenig. Should we assume the provided financial results are indeed accurate? You do know that companies with false financials are at risk of getting caught, right? I'm sure you've heard about Enron. Just a thought!

The rest of us are tired of all this greed you have.

Every seller i know in Pa. Which has some of the largest outdoor flea markets in the USA, is so disgusted with ebay. Many have left for facebook market place. Its all EBays fault they seriously mis treated Sellers on ebay. I tried for the last 8 years to save eBay from itself. Problem is eBay is owned by large wall street investment banks and we all know GREED in the only value wall street understands.
