Any Advice for Returning eBay Executive?

By: Ina Steiner

Former head of Seller Experience Jordan Sweetnam is returning to eBay as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Americas Market, which encompasses the US, Canada, and Latin America.

Sweetnam spent 12 years at eBay before leaving in 2016 to take a job at Walmart Ecommerce, which underwent a shakeup last month.

He will report to Jay Lee, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Markets. eBay's announcement didn't address how Sweetnam's role differs from that of Jay Hanson, who is Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of eBay Americas.

Lee said in the announcement, "Jordan's incredible experience and energy will be a huge asset in this critical leadership role and we are thrilled to welcome him back to eBay to lead our Americas business. He has long-standing relationships with many of eBay's seller community, is an avid customer, and will bring an invaluable perspective to the Markets leadership team."

Sweetnam will start work in San Jose on July 15.

Do you think Sweetnam will recognize eBay after his 3-year absence? Do you have any advice for the returning executive?

"Sweetnam spent 12 years at eBay before leaving in 2016 to take a job at Walmart Ecommerce, which underwent a shakeup last month."

He OBVIOUSLY (since Walmart is scaling back/killing off its ecommerce section) didnt do a good job there, so:

1) why come back to the "Titanic"?
2) if eBay wasnt good enough THEN, why come back NOW?
3) why woud eBay take a guy who left for a competitor back? (what pictures of whom does he have?)
4) why does eBay think they have the money (though they could always steal more from sellers) to hire back this bozo?

these questions and many more would be on the minds of people somewhere ... though finding ANYONE that cares 1 iota that "hes back" ... THAT is a tough job.

My advise would be to make as much money as possible, work your way up the ladder to become CEO. Fire all of the incompetent executives, the atrocious outsourced CS companies and most, if not all of the programmers and those who approve their work (about 80% of the workforce.)

Change the direction of ebay from a dishonest, greedy, narcissistic ad-laden cess pool back to a simple site that pairs buyers and sellers and treats everyone fairly.

Or...continue on the path of the other executives, further destroy ebay and retire with a golden parachute that is if you don't get fired first.

"(since Walmart is scaling back/killing off its ecommerce section)"

Wal-Mart is not scaling back their eCommerce section, if anything they are expanding it.. what they refuse to do at this point is allow sellers who do less than 500K a year online to be part of it.. they also still won't allow used itesm.

Many of us (Wal-Mart Marketplace Sellers) have been requesting they lessen the requirements to become a seller and start allowing used items to be sold.

They are the only one out there (as of current) who stands a chance at taking the throne from Amazon..

Just keep your fingers crossed, they still have a huge learning curve ahead of them to become number 1

I'm assuming like most of the other executives, he left to spend quality time with his family.

If he came back to work for eBay, there must not be any jobs available at companies that have built a bar for the employees. Or maybe he was the only one available who wouldn't question any of the inane ideas that Devin thinks up to take more money from sellers.

I posted a link to this on the AuctionBytes Facebook page and also asked, which executive would you like to see return to eBay.

One seller said Bill Cobb.

Any thoughts?

His only real challenge will be telling the difference between the eBay office and Etsys.

NONE Ina.

Why invite the trash back? Why pollute the ecommerce stream any more then it already is?

They need to hire competent people with experience who know ecommerce.

Why must eBay hire "hitmen/buttonmen" (being eBay is the San Jose mafia) - cant they hire ecommerce people?

"Wal-Mart is not scaling back their eCommerce section, if anything they are expanding it."

Maybe ..

"Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) single-handedly changed the retail landscape with the massive success of its online shopping platform, leaving many traditional retailers struggling to catch up. One of the most high-profile examples is that of Walmart (NYSE:WMT). The world's largest retailer was in danger of being left behind"

"Walmart expects its U.S. e-commerce operations to lose more than $1 billion this year on revenue of between $21 billion and $22 billion, according to a report by Vox's Recode. To make matters worse, while Walmart has made a dent in Amazon's lead, it's been a very small one. "

"Amazon was responsible for about 38% of online retail in the U.S. last year, up from 32% just two years ago, according to eMarketer. At the same time, Walmart's digital sales grew to 4.7%, up from 2.6% -- still far behind Amazon's dominant lead."

"In the U.S., Amazon has much of its logistics infrastructure in place, a process that has been ongoing for more than two decades. This includes 110 fulfillment centers across the nation -- while Walmart has just 20. Amazon also has a huge shipping network in place, and the company recently moved to offer free one-day shipping on millions of products, just as competitors like Walmart were working to fully establish two-day delivery."

"Walmart said to lose over $1B, weighs selling off money-losing online units"

"Walmart is frustrated with Jet— an online shopping site it purchased for $3.3 billion back in 2016. The mounting losses have put CEO Marc Lore on the hotseat with the company’s leadership, the report said."

"Besides improving internal tensions, Walmart will look to sell at least one of its three fashion brands that was bought under Lore: Bonobos for $310 million, Eloquii for $100 million and Modcloth for less than $50 million. All three businesses are unprofitable"

I guess we see things differently, no ?

Well if he wants to get ahead in ebay's corporate jungle these days, he should take note of this, it's truer than ever: "The customer comes last"

My reaction is Who Cares? He'll be back for a while to be the Devil's lapdog until he realizes eBay is 100x worse than before and bails like so many others have done. Next...

Ina,

I'd LOVE to have Meg Whitman return as CEO! When she left (and JD took over) is when eBay fell apart for me. I've kept trying to sell on eBay since then, but sales are very sporadic.
