PayPal $10 Referral Revival Is a Shadow of the Original

By: Ina Steiner

In 2000, before eBay acquired it, PayPal kicked off a very generous referral program that helped fuel its growth. PayPal would add $10 to new accounts just for joining, and then add $10 for each new member a user referred, up to $1,000. (Check out our article from February 19, 2000 for a blast from the past. Note that at the time, you could fund your account by sending PayPal a check!)

PayPal is running a special $10 referral again - "Refer 5 friends to PayPal and you can earn up to $50" - but it's a shadow of the original program.

You must send one cent to people you know who don't already have a PayPal account, and at least five of them must sign up for PayPal (and they must link their bank account or debit/credit card) *and* they must spend $5+ by October 10th.

That's a lot of hoops to jump through.

The promotion kicked off on September 10th and runs through October 10. Be sure to read the terms carefully for details and restrictions. Feel free to pine for the old days.

Let us know if you participated in the first version at the turn of the century, and how much you earned!

My memories of the "good old days" on PayPal was that sellers could receive payments from buyers via credit cards up to $100 every 30 days for free. Plus, if a seller received a payment direct from a buyer's bank account or PayPal balance there was no charge for the transaction.

I vaguely remember the referral promotion but didn't participate as everyone I knew was already using PayPal (and buying and/or selling on eBay).

Not much of anything. All of that for 10 and maybe 50.  Talk about bottom feeding.

How ridiculous. Who would be so desperate and have so much time to waste for a remote chance at $50.

Yes I definitely remember the old PayPal referral program. We included a link on every email and every listing (those were the days!). We probably received about 80 or 90 bucks!
