eBay Managed Payments Spotted in the Wild!

By: Ina Steiner

A listing powered by eBay Managed Payments (rather than PayPal) has been discovered! But where are all the others? See if you can find any - you'll know them because they're the listings that don't offer PayPal.

eBay also kicked off a promotion today that gives a subset of buyers a discount for paying with a credit or debit card "directly on eBay." If you qualify for the buyer promotion, you'll see the offer on the eBay homepage slider.

- Only invited, registered eBay users who see the Coupon in My eBay are eligible.

- The coupon offers a $10 discount off a minimum purchase of $50.

- Pay for your item by 11:59 PM Pacific Time on September 13, 2018 using a credit or debit card directly on eBay.

- Enter the Coupon code in the redemption code field: MONEY10. (Some sellers reported getting a MONEY20 invitation.)

The problem is, we wanted to test the coupon but had a heck of a time finding any listings that qualified - we only found one, thanks to sellers discussing managed payments on this thread combined with some detective work.

When a seller posted they had received an invitation email to the promotion, a seller responded, "Did they give you a link to those listings? How do they expect you to find them?"

Great question! Since buyers can't determine whether entering credit card numbers on listings is powered by PayPal or eBay, how are they supposed to know when they can use the MONEY10 coupon code?

What exactly is paying with a credit or debit card "directly on eBay" - are we missing something, or is this an eBay gaffe?

(Below is a partial screenshot of the checkout page of the eBay managed payments listing we found - notice it says the seller does not accept PayPal.)

eBay is like a racehorse with a broken leg, you know how they dealt with that in the old days....

I think this is Ebay testing the waters to see how buyers will react to paying with a credit card and giving Ebay the CC information.  It sounds like they have maybe woke up to the reality that nobody trusts them with their personal information let alone their credit card information.  The different discount amounts sounds like Ebay testing the waters as to what amount it will take to convince the buyers to use their CC directly on Ebay.

I wonder if Wenig is suddenly waking up to the reality of what a fiasco all of his decisions have become and is now actually trying to figure out how to save his ass.  Can you imagine what a career killer it would be to have to admit that  you were in charge of Ebay when they had to file bankruptcy or sell off the marketplace because of the cash drain?  Remember this is the site that Meg said could be run by a monkey it was so self contained and running so smoothly.  Then the Ho an the Devil stepped in and boom its basically done for in 10 years.  it will sure be hard to recover from that mark on your resume.

I was in a beta or 2 (yrs a go) (1 of them being GSP) so who knows.... LOL

I had/have no idea if its tied to any specific merchant - didnt try to redeem it - havent decided if I plan on buying anything at all ...

Ill update if I make a purchase.

Years ago, I set up a checking account with a debit card attached used ONLY for Ebay purchases. I keep just enough in that account for buying on Ebay. I transfer out of my main account to this account when I want to buy something. That way if something goes haywire on Ebay ( which seems to be on a daily basis) I don't have to worry too much. I would NEVER EVER tie a real Credit Card or my main checking debit card info to anything on Ebay, especially now with them wanting to be to payee. No way, no how.

I would honestly think the site or my pc was hacked, first i would unplug from the net,, then run a full virus scan,

Why are they calling it "ebay managed payments"??

ebay is just one of Ayden's 3000 customers. As usual ebay is just sitting there taking credit while other companies do the work.

it's really quite shocking how just a couple of people were able to run ebay into the ground in such a short amount of time

I see a few Large investment companies are minimizing their exposure to ebay stock, dumping large blocks of stock , and if ebay delivers another bad quarter, two in a row, it will definitely set off the panic button

Knowing that eBay is run by the worst CEO in the history of business, folks have little incentive to do any more business than they have to with the company.

With Devin's track record, the eBay Board of Directors would do well simply to removed him from the HQ building now due to the spending strike most customers are on due to Devin's tactics.

When you have a CEO who thinks he can force his product on customers, that is a recipe for disaster, the idiots at the top of eBay never learned the lesson of the "New Coke".

It would be laughable to see the percent of ebay's repeat customers (6 buys per year or more) AND their purchase volume vs. that of Amazon.

Transient business does not create an empire.

I still havent tried using the coupon - I was just surprised at the "quarterback sneak" as far as payments.

"Good for me" if they want to hand me $10 .... it doesnt make up for the hundreds/thousands that they stole from me - but its something.

I suppose though that its better this way then a sudden overnight change where Paypal is just no longer accepted.

Im also SHOCKED (SHOCKED I TELL YOU) that they chose me for this .......  I guess the Devil Wenig hates me less then I hate him ?

@mcposty

1 of our 2 accounts got the same message, we signed up for it even know we were already getting our funds instantly. The part I liked was they would release funds even in a dispute.

Neither of our accounts were offered this buyers option of credit card payment.

When you have a product or service no one want to use and you keep trying to force it on your customer base, soon you have no customers to force it upon.

This is the situation Devin finds himself in, but due to the delusional world he dwells in he will keep repeating the same process until he is terminated by the Board of Directors as CEO.

Devin is not the kind of person who takes rejection well, this is why he is still forcing sellers into Seller Hub when eBay has overwhelming evidence in the form of forum threads showing compete disapproval for his schemes to force sellers to use this interface.

So what has he done, he has proceeded to ruin the MyeBay interface to make it less attractive by altering just about every page display within that interface to make it less useful.

Sellers resent wasting time using Seller Hub, eBay has been told that is is a time wasting, time burning exercise in futility, yet Devin keeps forcing this folly on sellers, now is the next time wasting money burning module, eBay Payments along with Seller Hub.

The only recourse we have is to vote with our dollars, decrease our spend on eBay services to show management we are not going to put up with Devin's nonsense any longer, for the returns we are getting in sales versus value eBay is returning, it is not worth any extra effort of investment of dollars to sell on eBay any longer.

Even if they fire Wenig, he has made more $$$ than most of us ever will and it really won't affect him.  Guys like him, at that level, are not affected with the loss of a job like most people (most people are affected due to the loss of income related to the job).  If he has a massive ego (and we know he does), that is what is affected with these guys....money is not a distraction or concern to him.
It's probably fair to say, most of ''us'', have ''normal'' ego's, more or less...so we are not affected psychologically with the loss of a job as it relates to the ''ego'' to near the same degree someone like Wenig will have....''our'' first concern is the loss of income....his first concern will be the loss of power and the affect on the ego....people like this have a hard time processing things like this.
So...my point is, while I agree with most posts related to the outcomes of his pending failure, ''money'' will not be an issue for him and that is a travesty.  These BOD's should start initiating claw-back provisions in these CEO's contracts....then they will feel the pain the rest of us are feeling from their mistakes and the resultant loss of sales (income), etc.

Devin in his delusional mind thinks he will one day be compared to Steve Jobs, he tried that gig at eBay open and does it in his interviews with Wall Street writers when he drops Buzzwords on them like ā€œBlockchain, Augmented Realty, Advertising Surface Inventory,  Sales Velocity, AI Engine, Replatforming, and so on forever and ever.

When in fact the truth is, Devin is a massive flop, Seller Hub is a flop, he just laid off 10% of the work force and eBay has been cooking the books since Donahoe took a 10% cut on shipping and they added to GMV to keep the company putting up fake numbers for Wall Street.

Devin is doing the same thing with Promoted Listings today.

I'm perfectly okay with this being an optional payment method. Keeps new users from having to use PayPal. But I seriously hate that they're forcing it as a sole payment method.

From a thieves point of view, you have to admit that its all "brilliant".

Your TOS says that you can do basically what you want, when you want to (or not) and because you classified your platform as software and not a selling portal - its a shrinkwrap license and no court will touch you - its a BRILLIANT legal strategy.

Problem is that it angers your customers and steals from them at will - but when you are a low life piece of trash (like Wenig & Co) you simply - just dont care. (cause you think you are untouchable).

The rest of his schemes are brilliant as well. Promoted listings is a PURE money grab. Since the TOS says you dont have to show listings - you generally dont - or only in the order YOU feel makes you the most money. Selling it (the space) agan at a PREMIUM, allows you to cook the books by reporting it as additional income - when you didnt "do any work" the first time. Ingenius, but theftacular.

VERO is also a FREE money grab. Take money from manufacturers and then you   make money off their stores.

GS is also a scam. You charge high shipping prices, take a cut for doing nothing, you still SNAD sellers and make that oh so sweet %4 !

EVERY part of eBay is a scam - but dealing with them is the cost of doing business - like paying protection to the mafia ... the San Jose Mafia!

It's not just sellers getting screwed by ebay...it's the ebay employees.
He will be costing some well-paying jobs just to bolster his ego.

It anybody offered a conscience on ebay, he'd have it taken down.

Pace, there is one way to get back at eBay for their abominable tactics, cut your spend to the absolute minimum as we have, no paying to relist unsolds, no stores, no promoted listings.

If eBay does not perform, they do not get a single penny, any seller buying value added services on a ghost town marketplace like eBay is foolish.

They can hardly serve web pages to users on Windows 10 desktops.

You want to know why sales are dead on eBay, this is simply one of the reasons, for a long while eBay was blindsided when Microsoft had their pages blocked as virus infested, goes to show how much of a moron Devin is, dude operates with his head in the sand, he is certainly delusional and has the Board of Directors fooled, they even have him on the Board as a
Director, so you know it is highly corrupt and inept.
