eBay Resurrects Dormant Saved Searches in Haunting Glitch

By: Ina Steiner

"Apparently eBay turned back on some 15-year-old dormant searches this week. It's like my 30-year-old self is spamming me :( "

That's a tweet from this morning from Woot founder Matt Rutledge (who sold the company to Amazon) and who now runs Meh.com. If you click through to his tweet, you can see the messages eBay sent him containing items it thinks he might be interested in based on searches he'd saved long ago.

We also experienced this eBay "haunting" this morning, which we reported on Ecommerce EKG. eBay sent us a "saved search" email with current listings for a search we had saved so long ago, that we don't even remember ever saving it.

Others continue to experience strange search issues after technical issues hit the marketplace on Tuesday, as we reported yesterday in "eBay Eerily Quiet on Glitch that Began Tuesday" in the previous EcommerceBytes Blog post.

To make it even more demoralizing, most of my magically returned saved searches include the wildcard search asterisk which used to enable buyers to easily find that for which they were looking. It's all too sad....

Its called DESPERATION !

The worlds DUMBEST "technology company" is at it again!

eBays numbers must be SO bad that they are doing anything and everything to get purchases on the platform before the next quarter is up.

DUMMIES - just show all listings 24/7/365 ... its really not that hard. And, if your Commodore 64's start to overheat - Ive got a spare Atari 800, 2 C128's and a Tandy Coco they can use.

This uncannily brings to mind a vision of a ghostly Meg Whitman wearing the balls and chains she forged in her eCom life visiting Wenig at Midnight on the last day of the fiscal quarter.

She warns him of the coming visions intended to remind him of the days of a successful eBay past, where the foundations were set with a promise of happily shared wealth for all.  Before it was all trashed in favor of self serving greed, and disruptive lies masquerading as 'innovations'.

She warns him about eBay's present, where their emaciated sellers and dissillusioned buyers are considered no more than demanding children, hidden beneath a facade of claimed growth and prosperity, but who are meanwhile wholly ignored and face incessant uncertainty with every swish of Wening's flowing jewell encrusted robe.

And she warns him of what eBay's future will entail if things don't happen to improve the lot of those who pay his overbloated take.  Where not even HE would be able to sell his OWN gilded bedcurtain hooks for more than a nickel on the dollar from his glitch laden tossed spaghetti fuel starved shoppe.

Except in this case, he ignores all the warnings and arrgantly gorges upon his fatted goose himself, leaving us poor Cratchetts to wallow in empty promises and fend off the wolves ourselves.  That should serve to decrease the surplus population.

May God bless us, every one.  Because eBay, with all their self-declared almightiness, never will.

What I do know is that June will go down as the WORST month in my almost 15 years on eBay.  I've got more than one eBay site, and they all are seeing the lowest level of sales ever.   My guess is that all of my sites are "offline".  Lights out.  Items not seen.

Meanwhile I get a "how are we doing?" survey this morning which they say will take 4 minutes of my time.  They can't be serious.

I noticed this first on June 7, when several of my "unsubscribed" searches suddenly started sending me emails.

Worst problem now is that you can't turn them off.  They still say unsubscribed on the Saved Searches page, but emails keep coming.  I've tried turning them back on (subscribing) then off (unsubscribe), but it doesn't work.

Meanwhile, I wonder how many items I'm missing from searches that always return zero items, and generate no emails.  Occasionally, I've manually initiated one of those searches, and sometimes something DOES pop up as listed on eBay.

They've got a lot of nerve describing themselves as a "tech" company.  More like a "dreck" company.

Don't worry - Trinton will be along in a moment to tell us that it's working as designed.

I'm fortunate to not be getting those emails. Well, here comes the next "improvement."

So it's not a another glitch, it's a another test?  It's not incompetence, it's innovation? It's not utter chaos, it's a plan?

Good one.

I honestly haven't looked at my saved searches in months.  They stopped returning relevant results around the time they stopped mailing them to me.

I have a screen shot of an Ebay page from 2001 in case Ebay wants to go Retro.
AND : It's on Ebay ? What's wrong with it ? Offering defective merchandise is the norm on Ebay. Deceptive photos are abundant on Ebay. "F Off" is the normal seller response upon discovering I've been duped.

@ The End

You're doing the thousands if not millions of honest ebafia sellers a tremendous disservice AND reinforcing ebafia management's view and subsequent treatment of sellers with your ill advised and inaccurate comments.

MOST sellers work with buyers to achieve a mutually satisfactory outcome. That's certainly been my experience over the years both as a seller and a buyer.

Inaccurate comments like yours give undeserved ammunition to ebafia management to continue and enhance their abusive seller policies.

The glitch smacks of conspiratorial  'deep state' kind of stuff. I would have thought eBay did a 'deep purge' every so often. Odd, and frankly, a little creepy that they hang on to your habits that long.

Funny I didn't view it as  a "glitch" my concern was that these were search that I should have been getting for years now.

@rexford, June has stunk, I get a few days with a LOT of sales, then a more days without.   I'Malo finding that it is the lower price books that have sat for aile that are selling
