eBay Eerily Quiet on Glitch that Began Tuesday

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is experiencing technical issues that have been ongoing since early Tuesday. Both buyers and sellers navigating the site are encountering the following error messages when trying to accomplish tasks:

"Something went wrong. We're sorry. If you want to start over, go to the homepage. If you're stuck, let us help you."

and

"Sorry, we couldn't complete your request. Try again later."

Readers sent us emails and reported the issue on Ecommerce EKG and on DownDetector.com.

One reader explained, "For the last few days I have been getting this error message when opening or going to a new page through eBay links, specifically on the Selling Hub pages, or when opening one of my own items, or when trying to view an item on the search page. Nothing on eBay shows any problems, but do they ever show an issue? Looks like a server side problem. Just listing 5 items today and researching like items, I have seen this message over 30 times just today."

The reader was referring to the eBay System Announcement board that is supposed to display technical problems - all areas of the site show green, indicating "All services in Good Health."

Nor did eBay's social media team address the issue when a seller reported it on Twitter at 9:49 am this morning ("whats wrong with #ebay interface? keep getting these error messages since last night @AskeBay")

Another seller reported it on Twitter this afternoon at 1:13 pm and again at 2:14 pm ("@AskeBay Please help! I keep getting errors something went wrong and my action can not be completed and before it stopped working I was trying to look at sold items to research things I was goin to list and it redirected me to totally different items.")

Nor did eBay for Business respond when sellers reported the problem on Facebook.

Even more frustrating than encountering error messages when trying to complete selling tasks is the knowledge that the problem is likely impacting sales. Said one buyer on an eBay discussion board thread discussing the glitches: "I was going to buy a $700 drone, couldn't. Found the same one on Amazon Prime. My Drone will be here Friday. Thank You."

Another buyer wrote, "I'm trying to buy an item to get the 10% eBay Bucks and I keep getting the "something went wrong" message." The user wondered if eBay would extend the promotion due to the technical issues.

eBay changed its policy some years ago and no longer compensates sellers for technical issues or outages.

I have had the same error messages as well. I have also not been able to use any discount offers when checking out none of the promo codes are working.

I had this happen twice tonight.

Once when responding to a "item not received" & the other when clicking on an item I looked at earlier in the day!

I already posted it in the EKG but man the glitches

I listed an item. I put the items upc in there but accidently forgot to clear the catalog of the sell similar item.

Now I cant edit the catalog. Brings up an error saying

ePID has outstanding offers. I just listed it , Its not for offer.

This shift to the catalog buy box approach is so bad. Its causing all kinds of technical issues and they've barely even implemented it. This is just going to get worse. This is way too big a task and an absolute mess.

Of course they are not going to say anything publicly about it.  Their stock already dropped 2.77% today and if they make any kind of public acknowledgement that the site is not working properly it will really tank.  Remember Wenig just proclaimed they are a great Tech Company at the shareholders meeting and Cutter was stating that Ebay is a better Tech Company than any of the others, so how can they possibly acknowledge that the site is having issues, especially for a number of days.

Ebay will NEVER admit to this publicly, it will just eventually start working somewhat better and they will shrug their shoulders and ask what is anybody talking about.  But with the promotions they were already running back to back to back indicating that sales are not going to meet the numbers this quarter and now this happening, I would not be surprised to see Ebay have negative growth this quarter.  I think that would be the first time ever (correct me if I am wrong as it is possible on this one), while everybody else shows double digit growth which I do not think will bode well for Wenig after intentionally having the audio go out during the Q & A session of the shareholders meeting.  I still believe he was taken to task to put up or shut up which is why Ebay has been throwing everything they have, including the kitchen sink, at the wall to see what sticks.

All the changes that are never coordinated with other teams are destroying what little use that Sellers Hub actually had and now it cannot function.  Funny, but I still using Selling Manager Pro and have had zero problems finding anything all week.  Makes it sound like it is the New Improved Version of Ebays Sellers Hub which is where they have sunk ALL their resources for the past two years.

I still believe that Hal Lawton saw the writing on the wall and the fact that Ebay could not make this program workable and got out while the getting was good and his career was not stained by Ebay.

Have fun on the GM board Wenig, if they will still have you and your Disruptive Technology in their Boardroom.  It sure has disrupted things at Ebay, just as you wanted it to.  Now maybe your Chinese friends can take over and be Ebays future as you have continued to predict and seem to have run the company to accomplish.  I doubt that they can but I sure hope that the Board strips you of all of your options before you leave so you walk out with nothing but the Chinese suit you have on your back.

Wenig never should have gotten the job of CEO at Ebay. He's an unaccomplished individual who got his position because of cronyism, not talent or expertise.

He and his fellow cronies have been plundering Ebay, and by Ebay, I mean destroying small businesspeople and their livelihoods, and taking the loot through inflated salaries and stock options and bonuses (and using Ebay to get himself on boards like GM to cash in some more.)

Now Wenig clearly wants to bail out after the mess he made, but Ebay is down and he can't set up his next multimillion dollar gig if things are like this.

So Wening and cronies set up things like free returns, enabled buyer fraud, and the rest to quickly try to inflate the Ebay sagging balloon off the backs of sellers, so Wenig can claim success and cash out to go to more money somewhere else.

People's businesses and livelihoods are being destroyed for the greed of a few with Wening in the lead, and they should be prosecuted for what they have done.

Wening should have to return every dime he squeezed out of Ebay sellers for his personal enrichment. He's a failure but he made up the difference with other people's money.

'' eBay changed its policy some years ago and no longer compensates sellers for technical issues or outages ''

This is why glitches are of no concern to ebay, it's no big deal, so what  a few million sellers loose money, or are out of business,

You would have to be a complete idiot to rely on eBay only as your only source of income,

And for all you cheerleaders out there, don't think it won't ever happen to you, because it can, and it does, without warning, not even a hint of an issue, all of a sudden, it's lights out,

Experienced this yesterday (Wednesday) as well.

The Great Tech Company.

What does it matter. Sales are the worst ever and returns are the highest ever.  (eBay have conditioned buyers to return items--no other site does this.)
 Continuing to build elsewhere.

Error message seen all over the site Wednesday from morning to late evening.  Errors galore when searching for home decor and vintage collectible glass items I needed to purchase and have shipped immediately for a vacation home redo.  Many of the items returned the error message when clicking on the listings.  Gave up late evening and purchased all 9 items on other sites.  eBay sellers lost $671.43 in sales from me alone.

Think about it.

Wenig gets himself lucrative board gigs like GM based on his claim that he is a genius at running a tech company and a genius at "tech leadership" when all he has done is FAIL over and over again. Ebay is a tech wreck.

Of course, reserving more money for himself and his cronies, and trying to artificially prop up Ebay stock by taking away the tech contracts from American companies and transferring them to cheaper, incompetent, offshore Indian companies that mess up everything (and cost more in the long run) should have been obvious to the old guys at GM as a shell game. But many of them lack competence as well.

It's a crony game of puffery and deceit. The little people pay for all of their failures.

Ebay did admit not too long ago that they are offshoring their tech work to Indian and other foreign companies.

These companies have a history all through American business of getting contracts by underbidding and claiming to work more cheaply. The CEOs and other executives want to look like they are cutting costs and getting more done for less. Make the stats look good on the surface. Promise all kinds of improvements and tech wizardry for less.

But these offshore tech companies have problems actually completing these projects without going on the rocks, or doing them successfully at all. They can't handle it for a variety of reasons, and before you know it a project sinks and things go wrong.

Then some low level American exec gets blamed and fired. And millions more dollars get spent later to patch it all up, usually unsuccessfully. A weak, patched up mess that ends up being more expensive than if they had hired a competent American tech company for more at the beginning.

But it's all a shell game. Pretend to cut costs at the outset and "improve", but push the failures, problems, and spiraling expense into tomorrow and tomorrow.

Some of these companies have to write off losses of millions on these offshore projects that melt down completely, but that's all "later" and there are ways to hide it. Wenig is running a shell game like many of the other pseudo-CEOs of troubled companies.

If Ebay could get back to hiring competent American tech companies, you would see a big change for the better very quickly. But Wenig supports useless also foreign offshore companies who abuse people and work them to death, and fail.

As has been reported here by many, I experienced much the same yesterday.  After a frustrating 3 hours I just went and got a glass of ice tea and a good book and went out to my back deck and forgot about it.  I might check back into it later today.

Pick a reason:

1. They just don't care
2. Nobody is in charge

These "glitches" are far more widespread than Ina describes, and they've been going for nearly two weeks.

In addition to what Ina enumerated, here's a handful more:

Ebafia is also charging insertion fees when store owners have NOT reached their monthly limit. The amounts are small, random, and bear no mathematical relationship to the number of items being listed or relisted.

Ebafia is randomly and unpredictably charging small amounts for revisions, converting to free returns, and converting to guaranteed delivery.

Their bulk relisting tool is virtually non functional.

INEXCUSABLE INCOMPETENCE brought to us by overpaid underperforming cretins!

"Eerily quiet"?

No.  Nothing strange or unusual about eBay's behavior here.

Give us a day...just ONE day, withOUT any decimating and costly glitches.

That would raise some neck hairs.
