eBay Board Concerned for Security of CEO Devin Wenig

By: Ina Steiner

Concerned about the security of eBay CEO Devin Wenig, the company's board of directors encouraged him to use the company airplane for personal travel. According to its proxy statement released this week:

"Prior to September 2017, Mr. Wenig had access to the corporate airplane for up to 50 hours of personal travel, subject to Mr. Wenig fully reimbursing the Company for the incremental costs associated with such use.

"Beginning in September 2017, the Compensation Committee encouraged Mr. Wenig to use the corporate airplane for personal travel where relevant to reduce possible security concerns."

We sent an inquiry to eBay spokesperson Ryan Moore asking why the board had become more concerned about the CEO's security last year, and if there had been a security incident or increased threat of a security incident that triggered the board's concern.

Moore did not respond to our inquiry by press time.

I would think that the board has their priorities wrong. They should be more worried about this flakes mental health first.

The Scott Pruitt excuse in order to travel in high style.  Both are entitled cowards.  I guess both can't face the criticism when they encounter it.  Sorry excuse for "leaders"

Sorry excuse is right.

Don't think anybody would do anything to this loser anyway.  We all wished Donahoe would go away and then we got Wenig.  Can't imagine what sort of donkey is waiting in the wings behind him.

Devin probably whined that paying for use of the plane was costing too much of his personal money, so the Board came up with a bogus excuse as to why he shouldn't have to reimburse eBay for its use.

While I certainly don't condone threats, perhaps Wenig should follow the advice customer service gave me when  I reported a death threat.

Call the police.

It's a lot cheaper than a jet. After all, we know who'll be paying for his vanity excesses.

Moreover, I can't help but wonder why this highly ethical CEO is attracting threats. But I'm also wondering why, if true, it didn't happen a lot sooner.

No sympathy from me, Wenig.

Do you think that there really have been threats? Since it is well known (at least to us) that Wenig is a paranoiac, might this be a fantasy and a sign of his disorder?

Maybe Wenig has the equivalent of "state secrets" that ebafia's Compensation Committee is afraid that Amazon secret agents might steal if flies commercial first class. Too much hoi poloi noise in coach from sellers trying to re connect with Wenig.

He and the Ho have have killed at least as many online businesses as Walmart killed mom and pop brick and mortar stores.

Will they park ebafia's corporate jet in a "secure" hangar?

As said PERFECTLY :) "Do business correctly and honestly and you don't need to take such measures "

1) hes fibbing - no ones after him
2) he spends too much of my unearned %10 FVF on taking private jets AS IT IS
3) the board is ONLY concerned with free perks for him and themselves
4) what BS did he promise them in the next quarterly report?

the questions ask themselves, meanwhile - EVERY seller should be upset at how eBay wastes money given (pardon me - STOLEN from them) - this is just the latest BS from the weirdo in charge.

"Do business correctly and honestly and you don't need to take such measures "
Who is deciding what is "correct" and/or "honest"?  We all have our own minds and we often see things differently.  So what you may find as correct and honest someone else may not.  We all just don't see everything the same way.  And if we did it would be a mighty boring world.

I AM NOT DEFENDING WENIG !!!

I'm simply saying we all don't see things in the same way, there will always be someone to disagree no matter what you do in life.  And some of those people are CRAZY and/or off their meds!  Some people lose their minds over an Ebay transaction and threaten sellers with all kinds of stuff.  That seller may have done everything correctly and honestly yet the buyer does not agree and therefore lashes out.  It is unfortunate, but some people react badly when they feel they are being done wrong, whether that is based in reality or not.

Well that would be state, local and federal laws - not to mention common decency

You can’t really defend theft and fraud can you?

No one threatened him - he’s just insane

pace306, it is the Board who are the problem.  Like Boards at most companies, there is a "you scratch my back" and "I'll scratch your back" mentality.

I was driving this morning and Dolly Parton's aong 9 to 5 played on Sirius.  Listen to the lyrics.  Dolly got it right.  LOL

Despite what the defenders in the peanut gallery who seem to ALWAYS come to Ebay's defense say, taking private corporate jets is a waste of money.   If someone has made threats against the CEO the eBay Security & Investigations team should handle it.  Placing his entitled over-compensated rear end on a corporate jet will not solve the problem.

@pace
"Well that would be state, local and federal laws - not to mention common decency "  Expect that it isn't.  It is just people like you and me, not law enforcement, state, local or federal.

I get it that many don't like that I've even asked the question but that doesn't change the fact that it is a valid question.  If various law enforcement agencies had of convicted Wenig and/or Ebay of stuff, then that would be different, but they have not.  So that leaves us passing judgement, not law enforcement.

And a very few of those passing judgement may be rather volatile and blur the lines between the right way to protest the actions of Ebay and the wrong way to protest the actions of Ebay.

I agree that it should be law enforcement.  I completely agree with that.  But to my knowledge Ebay nor Wenig have been convicted of nothing, therefore law enforcement is not passing this judgement.

BR>I
know there are some here that view whatever I post whenever I post as being in support of Ebay.  It isn't, no matter how many times I say that it isn't, some choose to continue to portray what I state as being totally one sided towards Ebay.  It isn't, but their own biases prevent them from seeing that.

They say it when someone comes here with a problem and I try to help them resolve it.  That is somehow seen as supporting Ebay when in fact it is not.  It is completely in support or trying to support the PERSON that is having a problem.  This is evident from a recent Letter to the Editor here regarding Ebay auto opting a new seller into having Make an Offer on their listings.

There are many other blogs here where this happens as well.  This one is a good example as well.  I don't know if it is because they really have no answer for the question I asked or if it is just their bias answering.  Either way, my question is legitimate whether you like it or not is a different question all together.

"Well that would be state, local and federal laws - not to mention common decency "  Expect that it isn't.  It is just people like you and me, not law enforcement, state, local or federal.

So after all these years posting here - you are telling us that your moral compass is based on whether a person has been indicted or arrested - before you can make a judgement call on right or wrong?

If your grandchild swipes a piece of candy from a store - if hes not arrested - "its ok since law enforcement, state, local or federal havent/wont go after him"?

The ONLY reason that eBay has never been sued (hes protected by corp law - suing him isnt an answer) is MONEY. Thats it - theres nothing more, its not complicated, its not involved.

Maybe you dont really read the posters here - Im not sure - maybe you dont read eBays own boards - but exactly how many - 100? 1000? 10000? 1 million sellers have to report having eBay steal from them, defraud them directly OR indirectly - before YOUR moral compass and NOT law enforcement, state, local or federal tells you - hey - maybe theres a problem here???

On some things we agree, some we dont - but to say - that eBay doesnt cause hate and animus because they PURPOSELY hurt people - is just being obtuse and I cant even see how you see it.

No, you arent "defending them" - but that statement means - seems to mean - you dont even see it.

Paying to list and item and eBays hiding it is fraud - plain and simple. Theres NO clause in Wendys menu that says you can pay for a burger and then IF they dont want you to have it - its just fine - they need not refund you, nor give you the burger - yet eBays does.

That NEVER happens on Amazon - never (as bad as they are).

Their return policies in the stated help pages "eBay canon" states that items must be returned in THE SAME CONDITION AS SENT ... need the reference? Letting customers do OTHERWISE is fraud - do you need law enforcement, state, local or federal (law) to understand that?

Using VERO/TRUST & SAFETY to steal from sellers (making up laws that DONT EXIST) is fraud - same question - do you REALLY need a court case before you can agree its wrong - its theft?

Maybe theres a part here I DONT understand from your posting - but if eBay would do (or at least TRY) to do the right thing - legally and ethically - they would have less issues (or maybe none at all).

DW lies - he lies to sellers, he lies to the company - its been proven over and over - here - is just another excuse to use the company jet cause MAYBE some yokel said something bad about him - and its MY UNEARNED %10 VIG for work they did not do or were involved with - that pays for it.

Given the stated decline in sales for those who might be angered by what they believe - and likely have evidence for - is due to 'ebay fault(s)', it's likely none who might be a threat in a first class cabin could afford a ticket.

'Security' is a boardroom cigar smokescreen justification.  And an ethical CEO would - and W can afford to - be willing to reimburse for personal use of corporate assets no matter what might be offered as an increased 'perk', especially if such impacts a maximally manipulated but no less realistically anemic 'bottom line'.

Then again, affordability isn't really a concern when one can steal without consequence.
