eBay Cancels Seller Promotion that Offered Fee Discount

By: Ina Steiner

eBay kicked off a promotion on Monday that it has since "deactivated." It did not say why it cancelled the month-long promotion, but it appears it may have created terms more favorable to sellers than it had intended.

In looking over the terms of the promotion, we noticed it didn't place a limit on the number of listings eligible for the discount on commission fees, called FVFs. Sellers can list a lot of items for sale over the course of a month.

Note that the promotion did not waive insertion fees, however. Here's a snippet of the description, you can see the full page here:

What is the Promotion?
Invited sellers ("Sellers") who activate the offer and then create new listings in the fixed price, auction-style, or auction-style with Buy It Now format during the Promotion Period, pursuant to the terms and conditions set forth herein, will receive a 25% discount on final value fees ("Promotional Rate") during the Promotion Period (the "Promotion").

The Promotion does not apply to insertion fees or optional advanced listing upgrade and supplemental service fees. Discounted final value fees will be applied to the total amount of the sale, including the cost of the item and shipping charges, excluding any sales tax. All existing selling limits on your account (as well as category and item limits) still apply, and may prevent you from creating the maximum number of listings in this Promotion. View the everyday rate plan for full details.

Sellers reported a problem with the promotion on the Ecommerce EKG boards yesterday.

Some sellers also had a number of questions about the terms of the promotion and sought clarification on a thread on the eBay boards, where a moderator announced eBay had cancelled the promotion (message number 102):

Hi all,
We have had to deactivate the promotion and apologize for the inconvenience.

If you opted in and received a confirmation of acceptance, we will be honoring the promotion. You will receive an email with details if this pertains to you.
Thank you.

In answer to a question from a seller, the moderator seemed to confirm that only those who had already opted in to the promotion would be eligible to receive the discounted fees: "If you received the mail today that was shared above in post #104, then it will be honored for you under the promo terms." (See message number 110.)

This is the text of the message to sellers who had already opted in before eBay cancelled the promotion:

"As you know, you recently activated a month-long promotion to receive 25% off on your Final Value Fees.

"We've had to cancel the promotion, but wanted to let you know that your discount has not been affected. You will still receive the 25% off Final Value Fee discount.

"You will see the discount in the form of credits on your invoice after the promotion period ends on Thursday, April 12, 2018. Terms and Conditions below.

"As always, thank you for selling on eBay."

The moderator also answered a burning question sellers had about the promotion:

"As long as the item is listed during the promotion period, it will receive the discount even if it sells after the promotion period. If that same item is relisted after the promotion period, it will not apply because technically it was not listed during the promo period."

It's more typical of eBay promotions to extend the FVF discount to items that sell during the promotion period only - another potential benefit it may not have intended to extend to sellers.

Five months ago eBay made another costly error, this time to a buyer promotion, as we noted in this October Blog post.

Update 3/16/18: See eBay's newest promotion which is far more restrictive.

ebay is like a mother with 14 kids who's holding a baby and stirring pots on the stove while the ones under 10 are playing in the street...
...and has herself convinced she has things under control.

What's not clear to me is whether they meant they will honor just whatever sales you had in the short life of the promotion or  if the promotion goes on as originally stated if you activated it before they canceled?
I never got an email about the promotion (I did about the cancel) but happened to notice it on the web site and got it activated in time (or did I? Haven't sold anything yet... maybe they have hidden my listings?)

I agree with Ming. eBay can't even get a simple promotion correct, yet they are planning to correctly disburse sellers' funds to them? I can't wait until we get the "it's the cost of doing business" mantra when eBay starts withholding too much money, or takes weeks to get the funds to the sellers.

They have a new better promo up today for 200 "free" listings.  That could be why the other was cancelled.
OT:  I notice a series of free listing promos running at least 3 a month.  Anybody know why this is happening?  Seems like EB is giving away "free" fees.

I have not received any such offers in more than a year. Not that I think that it would improve my miserable sales performance.

Just got a 50% off FVF promotion on listings thru 4/12.
Are the 1st quarter sales tanking, or is AI running amuck?

I always get the "free listings" on both of my selling ID's but NEVER get anything off FVF. . .

Maybe that's because we sell most of the stuff we list. . .

Well.... I was the one that first reported it here...
I accepted it on all 4 of my selling IDs but never got a chance to list one thing before it vanished...
I received a message from Ebay on all 4 of those IDs telling me "oops"
As ZZ stated above, I too am wondering about this...

As Chicago48 also mentions about the new listing special today of 200 free listings, I know that this promo is real because I have several friends that sell on Ebay & they have received it...

However, I "DID NOT" receive this new promo on any of my 4 selling IDs so now I wonder if I didn't because I had accepted the "cancelled" promo & as ZZ wonders...
If I do list anything before the cancelled promo ends, if they will honor it & may be why I did not received the new promo?

So much chaos & no answers! As usual!

I also accepted the Promo and did not get the free listing promo. My items sell and I have hundreds more I could put up. Have not received any free listing promos for this year yet.

Maybe someone else saw this but I thought the  25% ''incentive'' was to offer 30 listings or more with free returns.  My guess, just a guess, is that they didn't get enough people to take them up on it.

I looked at my little neck of the woods and of all the sellers I follow, one was offering free returns. Needless to say the sellers numbers were way over what was an average month for him.

Also noteworthy, the seller is selling bulky expensive items that are incredibly costly to ship.

No e-mail for me.  I knew there was an upside to 2-day handling.  eBay should look into guaranteeing traffic before it worries about shipping.  Single digit views aren't helping me move stuff that's selling steadily at shows...

The 'promotion period' is now over.  I'm not seeing any of these credits on my invoices.
