eBay sellers are unable to send certain items internationally today - "eBay international shipping not working, getting an error message," is one such complaint flooding in to us.
"When I call CS (in Asia) they tell me that merchandise can no longer be shipped internationally," the reader wrote. "OF course this is wrong, they are talking about Flats, not packages, but someone at eBay is going to be upset if Americans can no longer sell internationally. I have pic of the error message if you want it."
The problem appears to be the result of a USPS change that took effect on Sunday that impacts packages being shipped outside the country. Stamps.com warned users through a blog post on Thursday, but it took eBay and its sellers by surprise today, leading to widespread reports of an eBay shipping glitch.
The new rule prohibits merchandise from being sent using First Class Mail International - Flats/Large Envelopes, Eric Nash of Stamps.com told us on Friday - the reason for the change was due to international Customs changes, he said.
We were waiting for a more details from the USPS before writing about it, though we warned sellers about the change in today's Newsflash editorial (available only to email subscribers).
Stamps.com launched a new service to help fill the void, described on the
Stamps.com blog:
"Starting, January 21st, Stamps.com will offer a new International Flat service for retailers. This new service allows you to continue to ship merchandise in a Large Envelope/Flat to an International destination at a significant cost savings compared to First Class Package International Service."
According to the announcement, the new option from Stamps.com can result in savings of over $15 per Large Envelope/Flat, depending on weight and country destination. It would appear that others will have to use more expensive methods to ship small items internationally.
Despite the widespread problems reported on eBay boards, such as
this thread, its Systems board gave a
green checkmark next to Shipping, indicating "All services in good health." Sellers reported the problem on
Ecommerce EKG.
Nash had told us on Friday that quite a few sellers ship low cost items to international destinations using this service, and said there was not a lot of information about the new rule from the USPS. Sellers will be forced to upgrade to First Class Package International Service, with prices increasing by huge amounts, Nash said.
UPDATE 1/22/18: It appears there may also be a problem with First Class Package International on eBay.
UPDATE 1/22/18: Hmm, one reader tells me: "It is 1st Class International packages giving errors on eBay. You have never been able to print 1st Class Intl Flat labels on eBay. So why their CS thought that was the issue confused me and them even more."
We notice there's still a green checkmark on the eBay systems board, and no announcement that we can see. Thanks to readers for providing information about what they're experiencing.
UPDATE 1/22/18: eBay has acknowledged it's experiencing problems that also impact its shipping calculator for certain domestic rates -
details here.
UPDATE: 1/23/18: eBay reports the problems have been resolved.
