Here's the Mess Hal Lawton Is Leaving eBay Sellers

The head of eBay Marketplaces North America Hal Lawton is leaving to become President of Macy's. Here are some critical issues eBay sellers are left to struggle with as they take stock of his replacement, an executive from tickets marketplace StubHub.

- Search Glitch: Lower sales as eBay hides US sellers in search results
We described the problem in this blog post a week ago, but eBay has failed to alert buyers or sellers through the Systems Announcement board. Here's a letter we received this morning that shows sellers continue to experience the glitch:

"During the past 2 weeks, the seller discussion board has been lighting up of reports of eBay placing new listings under the "international seller" in search placement. These sellers are American sellers, selling American products, to American only buyers. No international mention anywhere.

"Not only are these listings now way at the bottom of the search page, they will not be visible at all if searched with the USA only filter or if there are enough listings for USA only. This weekend, I noticed a few of my items were not showing in search. If I used the exact title listing, they did show up but only under international listings.

"As far as I can tell from the boards, eBay customer service is either can't replicate the problem or is (not) aware of the problem."

- Immediate Payment Required: IPR no longer at sellers' discretion
Sellers object to eBay's decision to make Immediate Payment mandatory. eBay changed the policy without notifying sellers, as we reported in July, and sellers continue to object to the new policy as it rolls out.

- Hidden Item Descriptions: Greater risk of returns
eBay is forcing buyers to click on a "See full item description" inside some listings before they can view the seller's full description of the item for sale, as we documented last month. Sellers say this increases the incidence of returns from buyers who don't bother to click the link and therefore don't understand fully what they are purchasing.

- Guaranteed Delivery - Uneven playing field
eBay is giving greater visibility to sellers who offer Guaranteed Delivery; however, the program won't become available to all sellers until 2018. In late September, buyers will see the guaranteed delivery date on eligible items on the search results page and will be able to use a filter show only items that are part of the eBay Guaranteed Delivery program.

Those are some of the biggest issues we're hearing about from sellers. Let us know if we left anything off the list.

What would you tell Hal Lawton's replacement?

Devin is to blame for all these stupid programs Hal Lawton pushed though, eBay is not  a retailer, they are a marketplace, but they want to act like every retailer out there with foolish policies because their money is not at stake.

All these programs, Guaranteed shipping, price matching are all fools gold, they will make eBay no money, they are stupid promotions is all they are, and they will be as successful as their failed 'add color to your box' campaign that did nothing for sales on eBay.

In the end Devin is responsible for all these failed initiatives of taking down listings that inept executives deem that are not moving fast enough, taking down listings due to UPC codes, the problem is they leave up all the duplicate spam listings that China sellers who lie about their location put up on the US facing site.

Just this short list is enough grounds to fire Devin, but the Board will sit on their hands and let this folly play out until the stock is sitting a 5 bucks a share.

1) Lower sales as eBay hides US sellers in search results - eBay told me directly that they know about it and its been ongoing for some time. They have no plans ATM of doing anything about it except asking you to end the item then relist.

Cassini has been patched SO MANY TIMES with each new money making scam - that it doesnt work at all these days - you dont put a bandaid on someone who has cancer - and Cassini is a cancer.

2) Immediate Payment Required: IPR no longer at sellers' discretion - eBay doesnt see it as a problem. Its there to inflate their gross numbers - therefore its an ASSET not a problem needing fixing.

3) Hidden Item Descriptions: Greater risk of returns - mobile sux, and eBay knows it. They can list all kinds of stats, but Internet Retailer Magazine says eBays stats are WRONG (mobile vs desktop) buying. Since returns arent an issue EITHER for eBay (since they only gain and dont loose from them) this is the way to "fix" mobile without paying someone to recode it all.

4) Guaranteed Delivery - Uneven playing field - eBay trying to be Amazon and compete on time - even though eBay admits that 2/3 of items arrive in 2-3 days anyway. Another stupid eBay idea - dont expect changes - eBays in too deep to bqck out now - though it will probably fade out in a few months - just like eBay NOW did.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

I dont know any more. The past 3 months I have seen my sales swing back and forth, up and down as much as 80% week to week. I understand this is the summer and may be slow, but this is ridiculous. Selling on ebay was good for a while (5 years). I have upped my inventory, offered more items for sale and have done pretty well. In all that time I have never seen sales swings like this. I am a top rated seller, no negative feedback in the past 6 months, always ship on time, every day, have very few defects. In the past 6 months I have almost doubled my listings for sale, done everything ebay wanted, 60 day returns, opted into the guaranteed delivery thing, and other jump through hoop things they want.

I was about to lay out another 20-25k in inventory to boost my listings. But, sales are slowing down, and seem to be going to end up in the reverse direction pretty soon. I have been maintaining my sales level somewhat by doing Promoted listings, Markdown manager, auctions, and adding new items. But these things take a lot of time. I don't mind investing more money to boost the amount of items for sale, but it is beginning to feel like trying to swim with a rock tied to your leg.

My items for sale are well researched and I make sure I can offer them for a very good price, if not the best price.

I am going to give it a few more months. If I dont see things starting to improve, I will most likely stop selling on ebay at the end of the year. I guess it may be time to move on, find another opportunity to make money!

Mr. Lawton was ''nice guy'' at Ebay . He was not there long enough (2015-2017) to see the results of his ''initiatives''. What do they say a rolling stone gathers no moss. For him maybe this was the perfect time to leave before results were in on changes he lead. PER WSJ article -''Mr. Lawton has been a key player in eBay’s turnaround effort following its 2015 split from Pay Pal , helping lead initiatives such as guaranteed delivery for millions of items in three days or less, as well as price-matching.''

I would tell Mr. Lawton's replacement to split the website into two distinct and very different operations:

1. eBay Classic

2. eBamazon (well, perhaps their marketing geniuses can come up with a better name)

"eBay Classic" would revert to the situation as it was when eBay was the King of "If you think of it you can find it".  Drop the dozens of rules and regulations that the small seller has been forced to deal with over the years, bring back the full feedback system (or better yet - design a true performance-based system that rates sellers based on actual returns and complaints registered, not on now-meaningless 'internet feedback')

eBamazon would be the pile of mess that's left over.

@Ignatz

Mon ami, you are so right.  They missed an opportunity with Half.com.

As far as him working any magic at Macy's.  Well, they did the same thing to themselves that eBay did, so he should feel right at home.

When I worked two jobs to support myself and go to school, I could barely afford to shop there.  Now that I can do better, there's not much in their stores worth having.  Their sales associates look badly treated and terrible.  A well dressed employee would inspire me but that's not how it's done now I guess.  The quality of their goods is only a hair above Walmart/Target and they wonder why no one shops.   More Ebayish all the time.  Even the models in their commercials look like they're wearing cheap crap.

Macy's bought their rivals, closed them and have nothing to show for it.  Online shopping has changed the landscape, they need to go back to their roots, quality not quantity.  Yep, they deserve their shallow Hal....

Hal Lawton will be nothing but a hatchet man at Macy's, they will close all the stores and try to move all sales online, all Hal is going to do is open fulfillment centers and ramp up web sales and pray that Amazon buys the company so the executives can cash out.

At this point that should be eBay's direction also, no way Devin is the man to turn it around, all eBay has done under Devin is get worse by the day, now it is to the point where the Board of Directors is going to have to step in and force changes.

Boy this guy has a thing for troubled companies doesn't he?

This is not the mess Hal left us with. It is poor management in general. The site is archaic with epic problems all over the place. All reports fall on deaf ears and the only time we hear anything from management it is to let us know of a price increase or unreasonable standard.

Yes, it is a HOT MESS.  And if eBay expects to survive, Mr. StubHub needs to fix these and the many other issues.

The ticket division of the site frankly has been keeping them in business. And their numbers are also down.

What it will take is a ''back to basics'' approach. The search engine appears to be beyond repair. Featuring merchandise from USA sellers who do not even ship internationally in the ''international sellers'' section is an unexplainable and inexcusable glitch, for instance.

Cassini needs to be scrapped, and a search engine which is fair and works correctly must be put into place. This would be a great place to start.

Also, eBay needs to TRULY treat its sellers as partners. They need to realize that, since they do not have their own warehouses, that third party sellers ARE their warehouses. If more folks leave the site and take their merchandise with them, the amount of available goods decreases.

We all assume that eBay execs refuse to sink money into the site, and are just concerned with plumping up the stock price. If they are not careful, though, the stock may drop so quickly that it would be too late to fix the many problems. Memo to eBay: DO SOMETHING POSITIVE. Now!!!!!!

What really boggles the mind is in this day of all the information on the internet, blogs, chats, etc., that SOMEONE in the Ebay executive arena would have knowledge of how Ebay is viewed by the buyers and sellers. Yet they continue to ignore sound advice and suggestions from experiences people who have run and built successful  businesses, brick and mortar and online. The advice has been coming across loud and clear for YEARS but Ebay turns a deaf ear on what they could do to turn the ship around to keep it from sinking. I have never seen such a bunch of arrogant, bullheaded people when the numbers and facts are smack dab, front and center of their faces and STILL refuse to change course. Unbelievable!

"all eBay has done under Devin is get worse by the day"

In the 2 years since Wenig took over eBay it's stock price is up 50%

I doubt the board of directors are unhappy with his performance. . .

eBay executives since Donahoe started there know what we are saying, they don't care, their stupid ideas what they call disruptive innovation have ruined the eBay marketplace, none of them have worked, Donahoe's ideas were fraudulent in nature like his value added fees on shipping.

eBay executives have links on eBay pages that tell users, 'tell us what you think', they have had all this data for the last decade, they know what users think, they don't use that information properly, this management team has continued in the Donahoe tradition of fraud, their fraudulent idea is 'promoted listings' which is the biggest criminal scheme since Donahoe's fraudulent money grap on shipping fees.

They know what we think, they ban sellers on their own forums who tell them what we think and have deleted entire forums multiple times just in the last few years, they hide threads from public view by moving them to the shill forums that are private where the plot against real ebay sellers, this is a very sad company run by highly inept people.

@ignatz - Many people have been saying the same for years. And as most of the regular posters have been saying for even more years (see comments by eXtinctBay, Beanie and eBay Shill Buster above), we know what they need to do to resurrect the site, but the executives seemingly just don't care. With the almost daily glitches they have no interest in fixing, a search engine that's faulty, and rampant scamming that they don't care about, the executives seem determined to destroy the site.
