eBay CEO Devin Wenig Shares Vision with Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

eBay CEO Devin Wenig gave a lively presentation to a group of sellers from 48 states and eight countries who gathered in Las Vegas at the second eBay Open conference. Sellers also watched from their homes and businesses through a Facebook live-stream.

Wenig kept his talk at a high-level, leaving it to subsequent speakers to discuss specific initiatives. He did speak about the new search-by-image features eBay announced earlier this morning, and more news is expected to come out at the show about previously announced services such as Guaranteed Delivery and Authentication.

Wenig said every single one of eBay's 20,000 employees - 600 of whom were attending the event - was working in one or more of three areas:

- Creating and helping manage incredible inventory at incredible prices for consumers;

- Presenting that in a distinctly modern and unique, relevant shopping experience - on the web, on mobile, everywhere;

- And building a powerful, simple, profitable selling platform for sellers.

"If you're not working on of those three things, then you snuck in this room from Amazon," Wenig joked, followed by, "Did I say that out loud?"

Wenig used the words simpler and profitable frequently during his speech to sellers. At the end of the day, you're running a business, he told attendees, and eBay is striving to make selling simpler, more profitable, while providing them with more analytics.

Wenig talked about the importance of staying abreast of technology, even if they may seem "wacky" or trendy. The CEO is taking artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality seriously.

He said eBay is expanding its reach, and said he wants eBay to be everywhere. "I want to be where people spend their digital lives and not have to drag them all away from messaging, or social, or their car, or anywhere else they want to be.

"It's a lot easier if we show up where they are than trying to change 5 billion people's daily behavior."

Wenig acknowledged that he looks in the short run since eBay is a public company, "but the truth is," he said, "I look at 10 years. I look at where will we be a decade from now."

"This is such a rare institution. Such a rare company. You know, worth fighting for. And the only way you build great companies is you don't think only in days and months and quarter, or a year. You think in decades."

eBay is livestreaming additional sessions during the event through its newsroom page on Facebook.

Ebay hasn't had an original idea in 15 years. All that hot air is just contributing to global warming.

Anyone who has been a seller for more than a few years knows that Ebay has always spoken with a forked tongue. They rant and rave about all the good things they are going to do BUT somehow their self indulgence and arrogance get in the way and nothing gets done.

Wenit would do well to just shut up until his has an original idea cause all the ideas in the past 10 years have done nothing for anyone except diamonds, carrot jumpers and Ebay.

Along with making selling simpler and more profitable, how about making sure there is less fraud once a sale is made? And is Devin trying to look like Steve Jobs?

Wenig said  ............  “20,000 employees  ...........  was working in one or more of three areas”

1- ''Creating and helping manage incredible inventory at incredible prices for consumers''
(CREATING and MANAGING? — WHAT?)

2- ''Presenting  ............  distinctly modern and unique, relevant shopping experience  .......  ''
(MODERN? Wouldn't that indicate that everything WASN'T broken?)

3- ''And building a powerful, simple, profitable selling platform for sellers''
(FOR WHO??? SELLERS???  Little that Ebay does, EVER benefits sellers.  Those Days are GONE!!!)

“If you're not working on of those three things, then you snuck in this room from Amazon''
(I'm sorry, will someone tell me what in the world that MEANS???)

“the only way you build great companies .................. You think in decades.”
(SURE, he's looking forward .......  He probably practices parachuting every weekend.

I want to know where is eBay's incredible inventory. They have those stinky shipping boxes if you join their program.

Wenig is impaired with cataracts.

Cataracts are the cause of half of blindness and of visual impairment. He can't see what is right in front of him.
They need to correct the searches, rolling black outs, the "Chinese duplications" and let the sellers take care of THEIR business.

We are witnessing the eBay End Game. Desperate times indeed are ripe for wild and wacky distractions from the too late to fix large cracks of eBay's foundation.

This Image Search smacks of Copyright Violation.  Encouraging buyers to screenshot/lift vendor photos from any site - violates US Copyright Laws and APPLIES TO ANYONE:

".  Copyright infringement in civil law is ANY violation of the exclusive rights of the owner. In U.S. law, those rights include reproduction, the preparation of derivative works, distributing copies by sale or rental, and public performance or display."

I'm sure eBay Legal Eagles vetted this and found promoting and using unauthorized photos found on the net for  Image Search to be legal.  So, for sellers , this also means  ... using unauthorized vendor-retail store photos is endorsed, promoted and allowed by eBay.  Wow.

I always appreciate eBay making me laugh (as apposed to most of my contacts with them where I end up crying LOL)...

20,000?  thats WAY to many ... what do they do all day?

"If you're not working on of those three things, then you snuck in this room from Amazon" .... he should be sol lucky that someone from Amazon would lower themselves down and talk to him. I wonder how often he and Bezos do lunch?  Amazon had 8 dealer suites in Vegas + 2 more for manufacturers .. eBay had ZERO presence ..... he WISHES Amazon would "friend" him!

"And building a powerful, simple, profitable selling platform for sellers." well Meg did say "even a MONKEY could run eBay..." guess she knew him well. Profitable? After Paypals vig, high FVF fees, stolen $$ on postage, high fees, and the absorption of all the fake SNADs .... I dont think so!

"Wenig talked about the importance of staying abreast of technology, even if they may seem "wacky" or trendy"  STOP fooling around and concentrate on box moving/making sales. Thats why we are all here - not to be lab rats for your bored 20K employees.

good thing I didnt pay $195 to hear this garbage!

@buildingmyownsite

Its too late for Wenig to retract this Image Search program - its all over the internet reported by CBS, TechCrunch, Engadget and heck even Reuters (Wenig's former employer) .  The headline for their Image Search program should be ''eBay denounces US Copyright and Intellectual Property  Rights laws aiding, abetting criminal activity within their billion dollar platform.

One can safely assume their innocent'' buyers stealing unauthorized photos & uploading them on eBay will be  conveniently ''excused'' from any and all wrongdoing as eBay will say they have no record of these uploads; their sellers, uploading the same photos,   on the other hand, will be slapped silly with Vero claims and quite possibly sooner than later, eBay action, as this violates photo terms in the ''seller agreement, for photos'' and Wenigbis in getting in bed with big retail.

As always, it's Seller Beware on eBay unless of course you are a Chinese seller or big retail.

@Trying-My-Best:

I am CONSTANTLY flaming mad about copyright abuse.  Regardless of the out of place Copyrighting & Trademarking by some, (commonplace sayings etc), for the most part, the big companies like Google & Ebay are flaunting the laws, with their sheer power, and their user agreements.  (While they will spend ANYTHING it takes, to stop anyone from stealing any of THEIR content).   I just wasn't THINKING when I read the article, 'cause I was focused on something else that occurred to me:

I guess what I, as a programmer, can never reconcile is how I can spot 500 bugs with the platform that year in and year out go unaddressed yet they would have you believe that 20K employees are so busy improving that platform.  No, seriously, I can send a list, if only eBay would publish an reporting address that wasn't a black hole or abandoned.  To be fair to eBay, that's the case will an awful lot of software though, busy busy busy at God knows what.

Where do I upload videos of my tools in action?

Heck, you can even charge me .10 cents for the right to do so. . .

10 years from now hopefully there will be a plethora of competition and hopefully we will have honest marketplaces.   I predict that Ebay will be at the bottom of the profitability scale...

@booklover

There is a site which has over 2 billion active users. If they ever decide to fully enter the eCommerce arena, this will greatly affect eBay.

This could happen in 10 months, not years. Though eBay has a great deal of traffic, it is underutilized with the Asian duplicate listings of new junk.

These are taking up space that should be used for the unique items that many buyers are looking for. If eBay can TRULY put an end to these dupes, than all listings can be shown, and the site can regain profitability.

How nice it is for all eBay's customers to have their 'chief' come off his throne to condescendingly share his 'vision' with his 'tribe' about how they should be running THEIR businesses in order to make his wigwam more 'comfortable'.  Why, he even took the time to dress just like one of the 'noise'.

Let's see...he wants to ''create and help manage an incredible inventory''.  That WOULD be a good trick, given how eBay owns and has no legal right to one piece of whatever is avail VIA their venue.  And that includes using any photo or text they don't generate themselves, or compensate the copywrite owner for.

As for 'presenting' it all in ''unique'' fashion, well, got to give 'em that one - as long as it doesn't refer to the physical look or mechanical performance of the process; 'color' tweaks aside.  However, nowhere else can a shopper default on a contracted agreement to purchase, or falsely claim damage or misdescription, or fradulently return items different from that purchased, and do so with no accountability, even months after the fact - and THEN be given the opportunity to publicly libel the seller as a cap to their 'experience'.  And that's unique, no?

And all this wrapped up in some claim of altriusm for their 'seller's' benefit?  Now that WOULD be 'unique' too.  If it were only true.

So - these are the big three it apparently takes 20,000 people to accomplish.  Meaning nobody left to actually, and more importantly effectively, 'service' their customers.  Nobody focused on fixing the incessant daily 'glitches' arising from ham-handed 'tweaks' and untested 'upgrades and changes'.

And apparently (save the annual hailing of the chief), nobody left to communicate surprise 'enhancements' and super secret probationary 'regulations' noteworty of late.

Not to despair though - all this is only going to last another decade or two.  Which is certainly much better than their 7-year long 3-year planned 'disruptions' touted to be so worthy last time the chief showed up to pablum the masses.  And I wouldn't worry about Amazon spies out there.  Their profits soar by default everytime eBay throws their spaghetti at the wall.

Seems to me though, that if they WERE doing it right, one might 'envision' that it wouldn't have to be so much of a ''fight''.

Visa via the picture searching issue - thats why they announce last Seller Downdate that they gave themselves permission to steal their sellers pics - because they cant use ones found on the net - so they need YOURS to accomplish this task.

BTW - why do you need to search by picture - can some one just ask "pardon me - what kind of shirt are you wearing?" Has society gotten that bad that we cant talk to each other?

What a liar. The only thing to make sellers more profitable is fixed search and end invisible limits on how much one can make a week
