New Etsy CEO Josh Silverman Sends Letter to Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

Josh Silverman reached out to sellers days after taking over the helm of online marketplace Etsy in a surprise management shakeout. Here's the CEO's letter to sellers sent on Friday:

Hi,
I’m Josh, Etsy's new CEO. I've served on Etsy's board since November and I'm thrilled to be leading this amazing company.

I believe deeply in the power of creativity and the unique role Etsy plays in reimagining commerce. Whether you're a hobbyist or professional, I'm focused on making Etsy the best place for you to sell your products.

I'll build on Etsy's strong foundation, with a singular focus on bringing more buyers to your shop. That's my top priority. The best way to do that is by creating great buyer experiences and deeply understanding your needs.

My first step will be listening and learning. In that spirit, please join me for my first Q&A in the Etsy Forums on Thursday, May 11. Check the Forums on Monday to find out how to participate. And thanks to everyone who's already shared their ideas with me.

You're a critical part of Etsy's success and I'm excited to work alongside you to make this the world's best platform for creative entrepreneurs.

Thank you,
Josh Silverman
CEO, Etsy

The facts that the company is laying off staff and that the outgoing CEO and Chief Technical Officer are only staying on as advisors through the end of the month are further indications of turmoil at the executive level.

As you can see from his letter, the new CEO is promising to drive more buyers to Etsy Shops - let us know what you think he should do to get buyers to the site - and what you think he will do.

I'm not an Etsy seller so probably should just keep my mouth shut. But I have followed the discussion on this site regarding Etsy for years.

After saying that, I read the excerpt from the guy's letter to sellers, look at the picture, and all I perceive is another corporate America BS artist trying to be viewed as just one of the guys that is going to save the world of Etsy (or put in the name of your favorite BS corporation).

It might be time to let go of B Corp status. Etsy has maintained it by greening up their hq to the tune of millions and millions and paying handsome wages to staff while in the meantime they rigged search to fulfill their socialist fantasies about spreading the wealth and left many successful and loyal sellers high and dry.

I hope search will be fixed and that the platform will stabilize. It's ridiculous how selling on etsy has become such a roller coaster.

I would like to see the forced Direct Checkout abandoned. Many sellers do not want it including myself. There are fees associated with thi service as well as Paypal. I should have a choice who I prefer to handle my money.

From the number of comments ECommerce Bytes gets regarding Etsy changes it doesn't seem many are involved or concerned. My fees on one or two sales a month are not going to pay for the luxuries provided to employees in the new Brooklyn HQ. Search and transparency need much work.

I agree Laurengrace. Etsy payments offers little in comparison to PayPal but costs more to use for many sellers. In addition, the amount of complaints in the forums regarding etsy payments still processing after days is growing. Payments that take days to complete result in delayed shipments. Etsy payments screws the buyer and the seller. Meanwhile etsy sits in its multimillion dollar hq complete with a yoga room and twice weekly catered meals.

As long as Etsy allows selling OOAK items anyway (it calls them "vintage" and they have to be at least 20 years old), they might as well expand the category and give ebay some competition in that space.  And who knows, if go to Etsy for used stuff, they might stay around for the "handmade" (ahem) stuff.

Yeah. Just like ebafia sellers spoke and ebafia listened...

The problem with this approach is that they listen but don't actually HEAR.

That's because whatever "noisy" sellers tell them doesn't it into their grandiose plans they learned in B School.

Seven months "experience" on a BoD hardly qualifies anyone to be a palace coup CEO.

I want my free lunches catered, Josh.

My sales TANKED as soon as they messed with the payment function.  They jumped over seller dollars to grab nickels by forcing etsy payments on everyone. A sale is not a sale unless a customer can actually complete PAYMENT quickly and efficiently. They will abandon carts and move on. You can't fight buyer loyalty to paypal.

"The best way to do that is by creating great buyer experiences and deeply understanding your needs."

The same thing Ebay has been telling the sellers since 208. A great buyer experience = more sales.

They have changed search, forced direct check out and now are focused on buyer experience. Etsy is now Ebay lite and headed down the same path.

Yoga room and catered meals twice a week! Jeepers! I wonder how much his golden parachute will be? Why do these companies think that can suck such huge fees out of sellers to finance this kind of corporate atmosphere while shafting the very people that make them the money in the first place? It is time for a venue to treat their sellers to some benefits! Instead sellers on most venues get nothing but grief. None of these executives seem to understand that they aren't there to drain the sellers dry, well maybe they do think that but they are mistaken. They may think that there is an unlimited amount of sellers just wanting to join the different venues, but you shaft them enough they will decide to earn their spare money flipping burgers or go and find full time work elsewhere, like maybe a selling co-op where all profits after reasonable wages to the necessary employees needed, will be returned to the seller at say Christmas time. Wouldn't it be interesting to see just how much money sellers 'donated' to the different golden parachutes and/or kicking out of the company bonuses that the bigwigs got. A co-op would very much insure transparency by the venue! And the bonuses would/should be based not only on sales by $$ amounts made, but by feedback percentages, quick shipping, etc.

Return relevant search results, coherent categories, completely ban keyword spamming, permit a minimum of at least 10 photos per item listing, get the shop feedback off of the product listing pages. Create new categories for products that are not supplies, handmade or vintage so this tedious war over mass produced vs handmade and how old vintage is can finally be put to rest. Serious sellers who want to make money are sick and tired of the endless nattering and bickering plus wasted time and energy that go into this subject.

We're all frustrated, we all have worked our tales off and should be shown some respect. We the sellers put Etsy on the map, we were the ones that made them millions and we paid the pay checks of hundreds at corporate. We need to be able to rely on Etsy to build our shops by Advertising, Promoting and not focusing on paying high bonus to fill their pockets. Wheres our bonus for putting up with NO views, NO Sales and all the BS that Etsy put us thru over the course of (7mos, for me) and years for other sellers. Get it right Etsy, you have a gold mine here, dont f-it up or sellers will get sick of it and leave and take their customers with them. Stop being so greedy, share the wealth!

There has been very little effort on taxonomy for vintage items.  You must be title, name or object specific as browsing is a waste of time and a very poor experience.

Thanks as always for the great comments.  The first thing Josh should do is read the Etsy forums about established sellers losing all their sales.  He should also read the posts here on ECB.

I agree with Tom H- the guy reminds me too much of Chad to be any good plus his name is "Josh" which says it all.

Etsy like Ebay, does not own the merchandise it sells.  If the new people can't manage to fix the site to keep the sellers, the equation is simple:

No sellers = nothing to sell= no Etsy.

Lets hope the latest genius can figure that out.

IF you truly want to be heard, GO DIRECTLY TOTHE BOARD!

THEY are the decision makers. CEO'S are still EMPLOYEES,  and think like EMPLOYEES.

I brought the action to Etsy in 2007.
Tons of people followed me over to regain their former Ebay success.
Etsy IS JUST A VENUE.
We didn't ask for new seller tools. Everything was just fine the way it was.
It's just horrible. LESS navigable.
We're getting sick of changes.
Esty has hit the wall.
Why no one has created a new auction / selling venue by now is beyond me.
We definitely need one now.

In 2002 and 2003 when eBay was ''hell bent for leather'' to make this long time eBay seller homeless, I opened a shop on Etsy.

I was very pleased and impressed with:

a.) NO monthly shop fees
b.) one day delay and then overnight deposit in my bank account (at the time Paypal was taking 3 to 4 days)
c.) no fees on shipping charges
d.) nice buyers with no draconian ''seller protection rules''
e.) low listing fees and final sales commission fees

So far this month, Etsy sales account for 2/3's of sales and eBay 1/3.

So far this month, eBay fees account for 2/3's of fees and Etsy 1/3.

If my piddling Etsy fees pay for a lavish corporate headquarters and free lunches for the ''high and mighty'' so be it.  That is just typical corporate America.

And if my excessive eBay fees pay for free lunches for eBay's elite - may they choke on it!

With ''leaders'' like this guy and most like him in corporate USA, if this country was ever invaded, we are in deep trouble.  They would all protest and hide in their safe rooms while we are taken over.  It is a mentality thing....I really do not understand what or how these people think now.  Also, if you pay them enough, they will say anything.

Just another stupid change,,,,,,

What's the difference between this guy or the last one, etsy is doomed, if they continue to allow their coders to run their business, (into the ground) it's so funny, so many ridicules programming changes, and for what? change is good when it's done for a real reason, etsy changes stuff on a daily basis, it's like re-painting a room over and over with the paint now about 6 inches thick.

Seriously bad for business, when you let programmers do what they think is right for business.

etsy just like ebay and Amazon are only venues, which we do not rely on for the majority of our income, totally meaningless to our overall business, we will certainly survive and thrive with or without any of them.
