How Will eBay's New Search Feature Impact Your Traffic?

By: Ina Steiner

We received an interesting news tip from a 411 subscriber, who noticed you can now filter by "Deals & Savings." The new feature began appearing on eBay search results on Monday (May 1).

Doing a search on eBay, you'll see that underneath "delivery options" in the left navigation bar on search results pages, eBay displays the following:

Show only:
  Returns accepted
  Completed listings
  Sold listings
  Deals & Savings
see all

The "Show By" feature is commonly used by buyers (and sellers), since it allows them to find items that have ended. Search results only display items currently listed for sale. Search completed items is helpful when doing pricing research, for example.

Sellers first noticed the new search filter on Monday, but many were confused about what criteria it was using to filter the search results.

One seller who tried searching their own items using the "deals" filter came up empty. "I thought it would pull up everything I had on sale via markdown manager, but nope - have no idea what it is looking for as when I click on their "suggested search" it is a bunch of random listings that make no sense to me and I'd never be searching for."

An eBay moderator promised to find out, but was still waiting for an answer, when a seller said they had figured it out:

"I have done several tests with the filter and found it shows any listings that are priced below the "trending at" price. It doesn't show anything on sale and I saw NO sponsored listings. The ONLY listings I saw were those wit prices under the "trending at" price and since not every item has a "trending at" price, not all will be shown."

Another seller observed, "What I can gather from searching, the deal and savings option sorts out anything used, new other, or with shipping. So basically, if you don't have a brand new item with free, eBay is trying to screw you over with the deals & Savings tab."

Let us know what you think of the new feature, and how do you think it will it impact your traffic?

Postscript: Anyone else astounded by the fact that eBay rolled out this feature to search without telling its sellers or its forum moderators?

I think more than 90% of shoppers, if they even venture over to that section of the page, will say "Oh look, I can look at SOLD items?!", and forget all about "deals."

When I used it on my own listings, it return 7 out of 3,000+ listings.  I can see no logic to what it located.  One item was below the trending price for a like item and it had separate S&H stated.

Another was just a regular priced item [NOT below trending amt] and separate S&H amount.

The others appeared to be randomly picked out of my listings that have free shipping.

All my items are new.  About half I offer free shipping.

When I searched mine it came up with 0 "so we searched all eBay"[Go to suggested search]. I went to suggested search. ::hork:: The suggested search was null...and brought up over 37,000 random items some with 'Null' in the title. ::wheeze::

April fools was last month, boys.

Is this feature indeed showing the best deals? Or will it be like the Amazon Buy Box, which places front and center what makes the most profit for the site, but does not always benefit the customer?

Intelligent buyers will see right through this. Also smart sellers who are not buying into the Promoted Listings scheme. Two days is not enough time, of course, to evaluate what benefits this will produce for eBay. Time will tell.

Why didn't stealfromsellersbay make a formal announcement and provide an explanation??????

Just when you think eBay won't sink any lower, DW proves his best to prove you wrong!

Of course there's some secret scheme- question is - what is it?

Well, it can't get much worse that what it is right now! However... from the changes I see, that is a misstatement! It not only can get worse, it has! Why doesn't someone with a nice fat wallet take this company over and get rid of the lice that's been infecting it for a decade now. I believe a change has been in order for the last couple CEO's but they keep making it worse! Finding what they think is "talent" when in fact is nothing more than a head rat guiding a ship that's been sinking for years and just won't go under! Someone needs to save Ebay from these rodents. I wonder how many of them are eating a large wedge of cheese right now and reading this?? hmmm???

Something is screwy. I did a search like Marie on my own items and it came up with zero ut then proceeded to show all of my items. They all have "free shipping" so that obviously is not a parameter.
Another hair brain scheme though up by the dope heads in San Jose that have no clue at all as to how the world works.

It can't make my listings any less visible than they are now.  No sales in the past 2 weeks as items fall off that were listed before closing my store.

I also checked my listings and got zero results.  Followed their ''suggested search'' and there were 23,280 results on all of ebay.  Narrowed it to US only, and it dropped to 10,000.  So it IS messed up - somehow they are letting me see 10,000 US listings instead of hiding those too!  Back to the drawing board for the ebay coders.

''Coming soon to search filters: items for rent for 30 days PLUS free shipping!''

Now that's funny.

Thing is, it would theoretically display every FS item.  If it worked.

Hmmmmm.....since I can't see every item normally, I wonder if....

Levity aside, wonder is another root weed on eBay, isn't it?  Once again, everyone is left with speculation, confusion, and uncertainty as to what if any impact may ensue with this latest (surprise!) spaghetti toss.

BTW, I don't think anyone would reasonably expect any 'coming soon' announcement for such proprietary changes, but once an apparent 'done deal', a primer should accompany, no?

But not eBay.  For a company that routinely disrupted THEIR customers - the seller's - livelihoods over mere (and subjectve) unfounded allegations of ''poor communication'' with eBay's CLAIMED customers - again, the seller's, -eBay's lack of any communication or explanation about this change continues their 'trend' of no LESS than arrogant hypocracy.  And given the history of this ''technology company'', it is just as likely to represent software engineering and testing incompetence as well.  Or maybe they were jjust afraid to commit to ANY specifics at launch because THEY had no clue what would ensue once they released their tweek into the ether.

Meanwhile, eBay could at least GET a clue and wake up and start communicating.  It's not hard.  Get the Department VP responsible for this convolution du jour on the phone and have them explain the objectives of the functional processing.   Call the project manager if that guy's/gal's too busy Veeping.

You know, like eBay constantly nags, hold the provider responsible for the product.

Yup, funny stuff.  Gotta laugh.  But there's a joke.....and then there's a joke, ya know?  Hard to imagine this latest option isn't just another one of the latter for that laughingstock of an eCommerce venue.

I'm just wondering what legal right does eBay have to filter people away from my items. I'm paying them well for a platform to sell my items. Shouldn't an initial search bring up all possible listings? I'm running a sale on some of my higher end items. When I did a search nothing came up. I deal exclusively in vintage items!

I went from $1800 in sales in March to $1100 in April and now I haven't had one sale in the first 3 days of May!! Maybe this is the problem? And I have a premium store that is full stocked with 1000! Maybe this is the problem?? Haven't heard from tool guy. Maybe his sales are up with the new parameters.
