eBay Search Bug Leads to Cancelled Order

By: Ina Steiner

A winning bidder was disappointed when a seller cancelled his transaction, and eBay's explanation is concerning.

eBay informed a reader that an auction he had won was cancelled due to a search glitch that was impacting its site. The reader said the email he received from eBay stated: "We were able to investigate further and found out that this is a possible technical issue we are experiencing with a lot of sellers, wherein their items are not searchable."

eBay told him that the seller cancelled all bids and transactions, and said the seller would relist the item "once the issue has been fixed."

We checked this afternoon, and the seller in question has an eBay Store and has generated feedback within the past month, but has no items currently listed.

The eBay System Status Board is green (including "bidding"), but it's worth checking to make sure your items are findable in search - especially auctions. Let us know if you've experienced any issues with search or cancelled auction bidding.

Exactly how do we do this?  If you search your own items they will always appear due to the IP address manipulation.  If I call a friend in Wyoming to search the same thing, it might or might not be there and is always further down the list of similar items.  I'm not sure they would admit something of this magnitude...so I am skeptical of this situation.

Two options: there is evidence of a search problem and eBay hasn't announced it, or there isn't any such evidence but the eBay rep said there was...

Here is a prime example of why this site is failing. If you can't see it, you can't buy it. And their increase in revenue is not up to snuff compared to other companies in the eCommerce sector. Wonder why??

Yes, Tool, we know eBay works just great for you, and everyone can see all your merchandise. Even though you exclaimed ''F**K YOU EBAY!!'' after the last seller update.

For God sakes, will this company ever wake up and realize that this rigged search game needs to end??

I have mentioned this many times on this blog. They need to make ALL ITEMS LISTED EVERYWHERE ON THE SITE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AT ALL TIMES BY ALL BUYERS.

If this seemingly simple task cannot be achieved, eBay will continue down this path of mediocrity. Period.

The whole damn eBay system is one big glitch designed by a bunch of business school wonders who are more dazzled by their wonderful process than it's actual results.

Wenig, Donahoe, Griff and the rest of the gang that can't think straight should just get it over with and rebrand "Best Search" as "Chinese Search".

eXtinctBay has it wrong on one point. eBay would have to vastly improve just to reach the lower rungs of the mediocre level.

I was on the eBay forums the other day and witnessed this for myself.

A seller said they had 20 items listed but only 1 was showing.

I pulled up her ID and sure enough 1 listing.

I asked her for an item number and title of a missing item.

She provide an item number and I googled it up.

AN EBAY LISTING CAME UP!

It was hers, and it was viewable from the Google link but couldn't be pulled up on eBay by item number or title.

STRANGE but true! I seen it myself!

trying to find anything on ebay has been an exercise in futility for quite a while now, and one never knows if an ''issue'' encountered in an actual glitch or a ''preferred seller search feature''.

i have a saved search for ''coniff wind bell'' and several weeks ago received an email from ebay advising me a bell was listed as a 30 day auction.  i bookmarked it, and can see it in my ''watch'' list and can pull the item up.  the title ''Vintage Coniff Wind Bell Chime - Very Rare'' (item#262930593343) (Ina, many apologies if we are not allowed to list item numbers, please edit if necessary)

when i do a search on ebay for ''coniff wind bell'' i get the following results: ''0 results for coniff wind bell'' and then a whole list of lower priced imported items.

also, from the bell auction page, when i click on ''see other items'' to see other items the seller has listed, ebay sends me to a blank page telling me the seller has NOTHING listed ''0 results''.

is this bell one of those mystery ''non-searchable'' items?  does this bell really exist?  should i believe ebay when they tell me the seller has nothing for sale?  has the seller sold the bell and ebay just never removed the listing?

so frustrating when i know the listing is there yet ebay tells me differently.... this is the ''buyer's experience'' today on ebay.... shameful!

I listed 43 7-day auctions last Sunday night.  As of this morning, 7 days later, 2 of the auctions have ZERO views.  The rest of them have anywhere from 1 to 48 views and 0 to 13 watchers.  Obviously, the ones with more views equates to those having more watchers.  Two of them have bids, and I know at least one more of them is going to be sniped (prior communication from a buyer).

The two with zero views I thought were two items that were fairly priced, and would have some interest, considering that I was able to offer a complete set of each of the items, instead of a partial set, and they are fairly rare nowadays.  Most often, only one or two of either set is offered at once by other sellers, both on and off eBay.  To have someone on the open market re-manufacture these today to this standard would cost at least 4-5 times my opening bid price, maybe more.

If people thought my price was indeed out of line (despite my opinion), or they didn't have need of them at the moment, then to have no watchers or no bids would not be out of the ordinary, considering the sorry state of sales, and lack of buyers.  But, NO views at all???

That does indeed smell of search manipulation and/or a search "bug".

It's so messed up, I think it is a combination of all the above comments.  I think it is so out of control, they have no idea how to fix it....how's that AI working out for ebay?

Some months back I recounted how I found an item I was looking for (via a Google search) on eBay. When I was ready to buy, I went directly to eBay, and using the exact same title of the listing, nothing came up. So I started over with a Google search, the eBay listing again appeared, and was able to buy that way.

I don't know if it's a bug, a "glitch," or what, but there is something seriously wrong with eBay's search function if there are items listed on its site that can only be found through Google.

I agree with eXtinctBay above that eBay has to do something to make all their listings available to view 24/7/365. If the people running eBay are all MBAs, how is it so hard for them to understand that more listings seen equals more sales equals more profit for eBay?

Sparrow - because ALL eBay GVM numbers are contrived, eBay doesnt have to care if they actually move boxes or not.

In alot of cases items arent shown until they are relisted in the second cycle - ie they list for free the first time - get no or little views (eBays design) then on the relist where eBay charges you ... THEN they get some views.

That + preferred sellers + Chinese sellers + carrot jumpers = the rest of eBay listings are "seen when ever, where ever" ... and eBays TOS says .. "there are no guarantees or promises when your items will be seen" .... Then they wonder why they only grew %3 and Amazon grew %56 !

Oh.. and the boat load of money they make off ads, redirtects, listings under yours and banner page ads .. means eBay doesnt give a d@mn if your listing is shown.

Funny thing is that by now - you'de think there would be a lawsuit ... but there isnt.

All incarnations of search are designed to funnel buyers to either enterprise sellers or Chinese sellers.

If that means making YOUR listings invisible or even non existent, then that's what these LIARS and THIEVES do.

Tomorrow the new highest fees ever kick in to pay for ebafia claims is for "advertising."

Not! That's another lie.

Enterprise sellers have contracts regarding listing fees. They pay nothing for listings and significantly lower FVFs.

So it's the small to medium sellers here who are footing the bill to ensure more business for enterprise and Chinese sellers. Most of us will NEVER see any of our items in these "ads" -- the majority of them will feature things being sold by the enterprise and Chinese sellers.

THEIR listings will be visible 24/7 while ebafia hides ours whenever they damn well please.

We have noticed a new trend on eBay.
Sellers that do not actually have the product that is listed.

We have wasted countless hours researching & purchasing products on eBay only to have our orders summarily cancelled by the seller because they do not actually have the item in stock.

This new trend is happening at an alarming rate & it makes the whole eBay  buying experience appear to be "Fake".

We have never had an order cancelled on Amazon because the seller did not have the item we purchased.

In the case of eBay.... we are not sure if it is eBay or the seller that are listing these "ghost" items but, one thing is for sure...

Along with all the other problems associated eBay.... it is now working hard to promote itself as a fake marketplace.

For years and years and years if I do an ebay search and get 7 results, and I refresh, I then get 6. I hit refresh again and it's back to 7, refresh again and it's 6, and so forth, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7....

When I got tired of my items not being visible when I searched for them and no sales, I closed my eBay store.  As items are expiring I am not relisting them.  I have not had a sale in 2 weeks. eBay is nothing more than a Chinese wholesale site and if anyone actually thinks they stand a chance they are fooling themselves.  When I finally started doing good was my own IP name along with a Facebook Shopify store.  No more lame auction sites for this old man.

It is very obvious that our items are not being shown 24/7/365 in the whole country.  When 75% of my sales go to Fl., Ca., and Tx. and I am in the midwest.
There is not a week that goes by that I don't have to cancel an order due to it having been sold and eBay lets it slip back through to my active listings.
I no longer contact eBay about it, as they claim they have never heard to that problem and I must have inadvertently relisted.  It could not possibly have been their fault.  I also know it happens to other sellers
I just contact the buyer and explain what has happened and return their payment.
I don't have time to go thru my 700+ listings daily to watch for eBay's mistakes.  Maybe I should have the time, as my sales have dropped 80% since spring 2014 and I have triple the listings.
 eBay, my partner.  Yep.

One strange thing I've noticed in the  last few months is that some of my items are only found in a search if ALL words of the title are put into the search. This also happens on a search of sold items too. Can't find  it unless the whole title is searched for.
What kind of search is that?

For my 2c worth...

I have pretty much given up on listing except for testing new inventory. I deal in usually one-of-a-kind collectibles - nothing extraordinary, but in my field most items are now scarce. I have 4 separate computers in the office and none will match search inquiries for an item I'm either selling or looking for. Sometimes I have to log into eBay.uk to see an item I have (in the USA). When I search for an item I generally almost always get junk that does not match my inquiry! Many times not even close! Very frustrating.

Maybe not so great selling here anymore, but I still can't find anywhere else where I can acquire inventory - as long as one is patient.
